Started the Atkins diet in January 2011 at about 350 lbs. Bought a treadmill when I started the diet. I quit smoking in 2009 and gained 40+ pounds (traded weight for smoking cessation). Decided to start the diet when I got tired of needing suspenders to hold up my pants and propelling myself out of chairs. The day before I started, I went to Sam's and bought big boxes of cheese crackers, bags of chips and super size raisin bran. They are still in the pantry.

The aha moments are great. Mine was when my pants suddenly got real baggy.

how do i start Atkins
I started by reading the book, "The New Atkins for a New You". The original version will do as well. You need to fully understand the principles of the plan as it is somewhat different than calorie counting, portion control plans. Also, the Atkins web site is very helpful. The books will give you sample meal plans and suggestions for meals and portions. The big deal with Atkins is to get the Induction phase right. It's not hard to learn what you can and can't eat.

Has your Cholesterol Blood-Test reading improved on the Atkins diet?
Before I started on Atkins I was controlling cholesterol at 185 with Lipitor, Niaspan, fish oil and 10q. I started Atkins in Jan 2011. October 2011 cholesterol was 185 with better HDL, LDL. Still doing statins and all the rest. Two weeks ago, with no change in meds, cholesterol was up to 275. Not sure what the cause was.

My weight loss is about 100 lbs, but the loss stalled for the three months before the test. Switched to a generic Lipitor. we are puzzled

Hidden Carbs...
The Atkins Induction Phase is key to the diet. You need to stay within recommended limits until OWL phase. They you can increase carbs to a level that maintains weight loss. The key to any diet is to read the nutrition labels on foods and/or track these with something like this site. The most important part of the label for Atkins is the Carb block. Don't cheat, especially during induction. Looks like you are doing pretty good so far.

Nyquil and Atkins
One of the side effects of naproxin (advil) and ibuprofen is fluid retention. That isn't reported for nyquil. I don't think a fluctuation of a pound or so is all that significant. Time of day can also affect weight variations because of different food, water activity levels during the day. My weight varies about 1% (2lbs) between morning and evening just before bedtime.

The best judge of weight gain/loss is weighing at a pretty regular time. I don't worry about minor ups and down as long as the overall trend is down.
