Happily married for 36 yrs with three grown daughters, three grandsons (one just two months old) and three granddaughters. :)

I'm also in the same lane as some of my buddies; I have never fit the BMI charts due to big bones and muscle mass.

Although I was fairly active (downhill & cross country skier, biker & golfer)...I had gained a nice thick layer of fat in my later 40's and early 50's due to poor eating habits.

By mid 2015, I experienced a real health scare related to a genetic history with diabetes. I soon after found and signed onto Fat Secret and have been using the site, logging my intake and calorie expenditures daily ever since.

I try to eat a balanced diet (20-25% protein, fat and carbs more or less equal) and am much more careful with sugar and high GI carb intake timing and quantity.

The information and encouragement I've gained from fellow FS members, logging as best I can what I eat and drink, as well as logging my exercise and daily calorie expenditures (using a heart rate / GPS based activity monitor) has helped keep me on track and has also greatly improved my overall health, endurance, BF % and weight.

I have been in maintenance mode since early 2016. While maintaining hasn't been a total holiday, I also don't feel like I'm on a "diet", just much more mindful and careful with my calorie intake... matching my intake to my daily, weekly and monthly ACTUAL calorie expenditures in order to maintain both my energy levels and muscle mass without adding extra fat or weight. This is sometimes easier said than done...

My long term goals are to sustain a healthy weight and lifestyle while optimizing my fitness, endurance and strength (power to weight ratio), as best I can.

I feel very thankful to have found this site; great tools, information, support and buddies ("Followers" now)... Good luck all and take care!!

Body Weight and Glycogen Depletion
Thanks Bill...nice informative post, ties right in with that old post "Why The Scales Can Lie".

Glycogen and water weight fluctuations are why I don't post daily weights, I only post sustained ups or downs (fat and/or muscle lost/gained). Not saying that's right for everyone as you and several other successful buddies here on FS post weights much more often, but it works for me. I do try to keep my weight within a narrow weight window (hydrated weight) and monitor my weight quite often, especially when very active to see what's going on.

From my monitoring, I've seen my weight move down 5 pounds in less than 2 hours and over 10 pounds in a day due to glycogen depletion, sweat and respiration (especially in desert or dry mountain air). After re-hydrating and replenishing the "glycogen tank", my weight bounces right back...more if coupled with high salt intake and/or large meals.

On another note re Glycogen Depletion (GD) and why that is a good thing...

Below is a post reviewing the positive affects of GD on increasing insulin sensitivity and overall health (taken from a prior post on Maintainers Group).

Note; I haven't read the whole article, Just the abstract, but the whole article is available for those wanting more information.

I’m a big (typical) idiot least you (and some others above) have recognized this and have made steps to get back on track...going forward, remember this is not a sprint, just make every month better than the month before and you'll be fine, even if it takes a year (or more)!!

Finally, when you reach your goal, set a tolerance window of 5 pounds and work hard to keep within or below that...maintenance is somewhat easier than losing when you find a rhythm...but it is NEVER a given that we can ignore or abandon the good habits that got us there.

Good luck!!

im ready
Also try to do a little bit of activity a day, walking or ???. Lots of benefits to this to combat type 2 diabetes...Google "increasing insulin sensitivity" for more info if needed. Wishing you good luck going forward in your efforts to better your health!!

Fitness Trackers
Below is the reply from Fat Secret regarding integration of exercise tracker data into the FS app. It looks like a direct link is not going to happen but they suggest portalling the data through The Apple or Google (android) health apps.

Hi Steven Lloyd,

Many thanks for contacting us and sorry for the inconvenience.

We are in the process of adding integration with Google Fit and the Apple Health app as you can read in the following blog post

We wont be adding any new exercise trackers at the moment but if you are able to share your data with one of the apps listed above, these apps can then share the data with FatSecret.

We appreciate your patience and wish you well.

The FatSecret team
