mskestrela's Journal, 18 September 2017

*Sigh* yeah, that happened. I decided to eat "normally" for the last week. Kes can not eat wheat. Not bread, not ramen, not breaded foods.
I have arthritis in a few of my fingers. Keto made all the swelling disappear, and my hands were pain free for more than a year. One week eating wheat products and 2 of my fingers look deformed in the joints, and I can barely clench my fists.
I keep hoping that staying away from wheat will clear the allergy, but every experiment assures me of the opposite.
So, as of today, I'm back to strict Keto, until I lose these last 9. I think the stress of Irma derailed me. Pffft...whatever. No excuses, it is what it is.
As other wise friends have pointed out, logging every bite is essential.
Have a great week, friends!

No, you cannot eat wheat, Kes, unfortunately, but if you want starchy foods there are lots of gluten free foods about now. I've made some great bakes with gluten free flour. Or do you have the same problem with GF? Anyway, as you're sticking to your keto for now you should soon lose the last 9 lbs. Hope your hands soon feel better.

Thanks, Pam! Doobs, apparently I'm fine with gluten, but allergic to glutanin. From my research, 90% of the wheat grown in the US is a hybrid, dwarf variety, and ONLY that variety has glutanin. I'm looking into getting some heirloom, Mediterranean variety flour that's grown right here in SC. It will be interesting to see how I react to it.

Interesting Kes. I only used gluten free because one of my sons was dating a girl once who was gluten intolerant. I'm fine with wheat myself. I just don't eat a lot of it because of the carbs but I remember reading that the ancient grains were much better for us. I shall be interested to see how you react too.

How to post here ????

I hope you feel better soon, Kes. I've heard good results from people trying spelt, farro and einkorn as alternatives to the newer dwarf wheats so there is hope. All the best!

@usa.ardian, to post, go to your journal (the spiral notebook icon in the menu bar), and make sure your preferences are set to either 'public' or 'following'. After you write, be sure to click the 'submit' button so it will post.

Thanks for the reminder @Phooka! I did try some spelt products years ago, and as I recall, responded quite favorably. Once I get to goal, I'll look into all of your suggestions.

@gamieb, I know, you're right. And, since I'm allergic to wheat, there is considerable inflammation accounting for it, as well. Don't worry, I'm not stopping. This isn't my first rodeo! LOL! People who've followed me since the start have watched (with some amusement) my 'experiments' for the last 18 months or so. *gigglesnort*

Good luck. I feel your pain. When I eat off my program it does not take long to gain 1 - 3 pounds back. That does not sound like a lot until consideration is made for the fact that I am petite. When I lose 2 pounds people notice. The flip side is a gain of same and it is noticed. Have you consulted with a registered dietitian? That might help.

Don't worry about the weight gain. What's inflammation? WATER. As soon as you go back to wheat-free, low carb, your weight will drop back. You are doing great. Remember: We are human beings, and we have our whole lives to live. If we were gods, we might reach a state of perfection necessary to never fall off the wagon. But we are imperfect creatures, so we have to accept ourselves as seeking to be increasingly beautiful versions of brokenness. I've been struggling a little the past few weeks, too. But one thing I've accomplished in the past 5 years -- I never just throw up my hands and give up anymore. I don't beat myself up for a 2-3 pound slide -- I just restart. And while I'm not losing right now, I'm not regaining either, and so I'm satisfied. Feel better!

"we are imperfect creatures, so we have to accept ourselves as seeking to be increasingly beautiful versions of brokenness" I love this sentence, I needed that pep talk too.

I can't take credit for the quote. It is Shannon Alder:“There is no perfection, only beautiful versions of brokenness.” It was the quote on the sign of the Church of Christ congregation I pass every day when I walk the dogs. I looked it up when I got home to fine the source. It really stuck with me.

I'm SO with you here. I've fallen off the wagon myself and am back on it tomorrow! I find that I HAVE to log my food before I eat it to stay on plan. So I logged my meals for tomorrow, Wed, and Thurs to keep myself on track!!!
