Fear of fruit (I assume the sugars), would that be fructophobia (Just kidding around a little). I had this vision of a horror movie, but being chased by a guy in a banana suit. I had to post with that image in my head. - I am diabetic and had a long running belief that I should avoid fruit. My new endocrinologist basically said if fruit is the worst thing you do, then you are fine. I don't know how fruit works in the world of extremely low carb diets (atkins, et al), but that bit of guidance from my doc has helped tremendously. It takes the edge of the need for carbs (sweets in particular). I still monitor my carbs and my calories closely, but eating a relatively normal diet has made this all bearable. The weight loss is slower and I have to exercise a bit more to burn off the carbs, but this is something I can really live with.

I'm so allergic to bananas. Everything they touch on the way down breaks out in hives. Can you imagine the itch in the roof of your mouth and throat? Shudders. Having said that, about once or twice a year I HAVE to have one. Bizarre. I get my potassium from oranges. Half the food I eat every day is a fruit or veggie (mostly fruit). I also eat POTATOES (imagines the low carbers hiding under the sofa).

I love fruit. I'm a watermelon-aholic, lol! Fruit is so full of fiber and nutrients. Don't be afraid to have a a couple fruits a day. It's not the pears or apples that make people gain. It's all the processed stuff. If you low carb it, then add fruit back in slowly.

I ate a banana as part of breakfast. You've reminded me how few I've ever eaten, possibly in my life. I find them sort of hum-drum, but the calories seem dense enough to keep my pace up. And it definitely gave me a sated feeling.

Bananas make me hungry all day if I eat for breakfast. but im ok to eat one in a shake or later in the day. I think its the protein I have to eat with it or it spikes my sugar levels up to much and makes me hungry. how knows but that's what I think anyway.

Instacrazy, this may be dawn out but please stick with me till the end. I started developing my dysfunctional relationship with food in my early teens (as I'm sure many of us did). My first bout of disfunction lead directly to my later and longer running bout of disfunction. For all of my adult life I have refused to deny myself anything I wanted to eat in any amount I wanted to eat. That is because at 13 I became anorexic. I still very clearly remember my mind set during that time and looking back it is very scary. I am eternally grateful that I had a caring and attentive friend who realized what I was doing to myself and interveined. I don't want to know what I would have done to myself without her help. I'm telling you all of this because I was quite literally afraid to eat. I was afraid of the calories and the fat they could cause. So my advice to you is: If you realize you have a fear of food confront it head on. Don't allow this kind of fear to grow. Left unchecked it will lead to even more unhealthy eating habits that will still cause all kinds of health problems for you. I'm sure, like me, you are trying to find a healthy eating balance but we must take care not to allow ourselves to swing in the other direction while on this journey. Take care, love, and happy journey.

IC, don't be afraid. You are not doing the low carb thing. bananas have lots and lots of nutrients. I normally eat one a day, I might miss a weekend day now and then. Workdays one goes in my am smoothie. Weekends sometimes a banana topped with a hot cereal of roasted spelt and almond milk. Some times just one plain or dipped in a bit of peanut butter, or toasted nuts.

Don't be afraid of the banana. Make him your friend! Try my favorite desert of all time, and it's actually pretty healthy. One glutton free waffle spread with almond butter and topped with half a banana drizzled lightly in honey. Using the honey sparingly and only half the banana keeps the GI a little lower. It is so yummy, it's ridiculous.

ICrazy, can't believe you are vegetarian and are not eating fruit. Eat fruit, it's good for you.

Have you read the story of Bananagirl on the net? Most of my morning smoothies contain at least 3 bananas plus a pound of something else ie plums, strawberries, raspberries. I could never eat more than 1 as a whole fruit...they make me gag LOL

I'm not a banana guy myself. I enjoys apples, when I eat fruit, which is seldom. We should all take a moment and pay homage to the mighty Apple!

I know it's crazy I don't eat fruit. Probably why my name isn't CompletelySane. I don't know what started this phobia. I love fruit. Especially oranges which I'm completely allergic to. Part of it has to be my Dad is diabetic and especially bananas hit his blood sugar hard. Beyond that I have no idea. I know they are good for you and completely natural. That's why yesterday I ate a banana. Ate one today too.

Enjoy the bananas! Lots of potassium - so good for you. If they get too ripe for you (I don't like ripe bananas), let them get really ripe, peel them, freeze them, and then put chunks of frozen bananas in a food processor or blender along with some cocoa powder for some wonderful chocolate "ice cream." You've made me want to buy some bananas.
