Phil, I would revise that list because I don't know if keto is good for T1D. I do know it's being used by T2D to lose weight, eliminate/reduce/avoid medications. It certainly has worked for me. Also - I don't find keto to be restrictive - except for eliminating sweets.

100-120 grams protein, I think it’s 50-60 grams fat n rest carbs
I try to keep my protein on point, but the rest I don’t really care about

I’m 120 lbs so it’s .8-1 grams of protein per pound

I completely agree with this. I eat whole food plant based, which is a hell of a lot easier to stick to than keto, but once in a while, I want a real pizza, or burger, or some other form of junk food. I treat it the same way I treat candy. You wouldn't want to live on the stuff, but once in a while won't hurt anything. With keto, the more I learn about it, she scarier it becomes. It's seriously dangerous.

Rosio, that seems like a lot of protein. I am 140lbs and target 0.5g per pound. Sources I read (Phinney & Volek) call for 0.6 to 1.0 g per pound of lean body mass. If your bf is 15%, that would be 61 to 102 g daily. Excess protein can be converted to glucose through gluconeogenesis.

How do you calculate how much protein to eat?

I’ve been on this journey for over three years now and I’ve lost 33 pounds so far. I think the main thing I have changed is that I don’t eat at night anymore and I go to bed early.

I think that it`s great Phil that you`re posting and showing us all that Keto can work. When I first read about Keto and looked briefly on the site I thought that people lost 10 pounds and were stuck there. I am not planning on trying it but I am curious. You mentioned that perhaps it suits people who have been struggling for a long time without success. I also wonder if body type, exercise that a person likes to do or maybe people who would have naturally eaten a diet higher in fat would dictate if a high fat diet would be better for them?

Thanks, Charlotte. There's a heap-ton of keto success stories, that's why keto is so often attacked. Check out dietdoctor.com if you want to know more.

Yeah it’s technically true that the body can convert protein into fat, but highly unlikely and you would have to be eating an astronomical amount.

LOL I don’t find keto restrictive. LOL but then, I eat healthy whole foods with lots of fiber. 🤷🏻♀️

The whole reason it works is that it's restrictive. You have way fewer options. Fewer options mean fewer calories without needing to count. In a calorie surplus, your body will just use the fat or carbs you ate to make you fatter, no need to use the proteins. It takes your body bout a day and a half to digest food, the only reason your body would ever need to convert protein to fat is if you somehow ate 100% protein which is Very hard to do.
