SPRING RECOMP 2021 - DAY 38 REST DAY
Ice pick's back in the left eye. Oozing again. Huffing oil of oregano to no avail. Face visibly inflamed. #2 now also has it, so awesome!
#1's new employer, it turns out, offers an artisanal deep fried mozzarella stick the size of a Nathan's famous. Including bun. Thankfully, even with employee discount, an order of two is about the same cost as a 3# bag of frozen from the restaurant supply.
Garbage disposal has advanced from train clatter to taxiing Piper Cub. Less harsh on the ear. Increased foreboding. Despite being forcibly exfiltrated from the kitchen at 0300, the night elves managed to build a delicately balanced, Calderesque, tiered fountain of dirty dishes in the sink, sweep the kickspace into the middle of the floor for my pre-dawn barefoot cheese dance, and wedge the business end of the broom amongst the sheet pans. They are nothing if not industrious.
Multiple times each day, sometimes within a single minute, I am asked "how can I help?" I do so want to answer honestly.
Instead, I content myself with visions of my own preemptive demise. Slightly addled, sporting a warm Lagavulin buzz and a bespoke 150s blue check fit for Gatsby, I smile peacefully atop the pyre as the boys loose the flaming arrow and send me downriver to the approving roar of the gathered drunken hoard, whilst the only Ex for whom I have a remaining care, ever the stoic, sheds tears alone in barefoot silence at dock's end, hand open on heart, blazing mane aloft in the Fall breeze, the very portrait of promise unfulfilled, forever blistering, wistful, and completely undiminished by time's unraveling of the myelin sheath, freed at last only when my final wisp vanishes at horizon, just where river meets bay and orange flame of final sunset.
We never wore shoes.
