There were posts tonight about the passing of our parents and what a wound it leaves many people with. Tonight I got a call from the very first person I ever helped on their weight loss and lifestyle change journey. He was 18 at the time. Now about 50–52.. he was my oldest daughters friend. Anyway, my daughter had given him a bookcase that my dad had made for me when I got my first apartment, then I gave it to her when she got her first apartment and she in turn gave it to this young man when he moved into his place. Then when he moved east he gave it to his parents and now his last parent has passed away and he called me to return it to it’s rightful owner. He sent me a picture and it looks just like it did the day I first gave it away. I certainly don’t need it, but for now I will find a place of honor for it since it has traveled so long and far to finally come home to rest with me. My dad would have been proud.

I have 4 of my oldest daughters friends from high school who I am in regular contact with. They all still call me other mother and I hear from them frequently. In all these years I have always gotten a call from each one on Mother’s Day

My grandfather carved a large wooden bowl which my Mother still had until her latest move/down-sizing/retirement home. She offered it to me but I declined and she donated it. I am now regretting that decision. I wish I could go back and take her up on the offer. He died when I was only 6 months old and I didn't really feel a tie to him. But as I am aging and seeing my parents aging, I'm seeing more the value in objects as memories.

Rosie we can do it—- oh I’m so sorry about that but I do understand. Especially in today’s world, we just can hang on to everything. My parents were products of the depression era and very frugal so much of the decorator items in our home were k-mart , Walmart quality figurines and pictures. My sister had an emotional need to keep all those things even though they were not cherished personal possessions even to my folks. But I only kept the things that had been passed down for a couple of generations with a story to tell.

I have an incredibly eclectic decorator style so I have very inexpensive things mixed in with things that may have considerable value. What I have done is to put stickers on the bottoms or backs of things so my daughter will be able to identify things that she needs to take a close look at before she deposits in a trash dumpster Or gives to the Goodwill.
