5'10" ex athlete now sedentary. A writer in Florida that needs to lose 10 pounds that has a hard time with this nervous system dysfunction garbage. I gotta move everytime I'm not disoriented or in pain - the name of the game is strike while the iron is hot for me. I have. Nutrition background and this year has still been a major struggle - from 126 to 146 and now back to 139. I just want to find a way to stay 130 without obsessing. Wish me luck :)

I hope zero carbs doesn't mean actually 0 carbs, I hope that's just an expression. Zero carbs means zero fiber... I'd hate to think of a world without fiber. lol

The concept of drinking water first thing in the morning can also fill some of the volume of your stomach- leaving you less room for donuts and poptarts. What do I know anyway? lol

Oh, and I love NPR, but the above article says, "Just drink when your thirsty". That is pretty bad advice, it's like, "Eat when you're hungry". Your brain sends you hunger and thirst signals when it NEEDS something, and I don't like my body to go without water long enough to NEED water. I don't let it get hungry either, feeding it every 2-3 hours. By the time you're thirsty, you're already in NEED of water. Keep yourself hydrated for just one week and increase your fiber gradually, and you'll see the results.

I think water intake is greatly UNDER emphasized. When I worked as a nutritional consultant with the health department, I was amazed at the huge difference in weight loss between those patients that drank their full 8 glasses of water a day and incorporated additional fiber into their diets. The fiber in your system swells with water, helping you feel full and regulating your digestion. The less waste in your system, the less food that is sitting in your intestines.

A lot of people don't realize, but your intestines don't have an off switch. Whatever sits in your colon will just be leached and leached of nutrients as long as it sits there. Also, it will build up and make your stomach look bigger. Not anything I want to happen to me.

Many vitamins are water soluble, and if you don't drink enough water you will not absorb your nutrients properly. Most people that suffer from (occasional, not chronic) fatigue are dehydrated, so it may help give you a jump if you increase your water levels.

A cool factoid I heard also that makes sense, is that if you drink 12 ounces of cold water first thing in the morning, it helps you burn additional calories. The idea is that your body has to heat that water to your normal body temperature, spiking your metabolism and entering thermogenisis. Pretty cool!

I pound serious amounts of water when I want to crack down on weightloss. Be sure to not overdo distilled water, as it can leach important electrolytes from your system. I also drink a lot of zero calorie beverages to break up the water monotony. Also, be sure to take a multivitamin so as not to flush too many of your vitamins at once if your body is not used to mass amounts of water. Smile
