I am 51 years old and I generally did not struggle with extra weight until my early 30's and started needing medications that weight gain is a very big side effect. Before then, I did often go up and down 5-10 pounds or so, but nothing extreme. My first weight gain, in my early 30's, was about 30 pounds in 6 months. I was never able to get more than 10 off. My most recent large weight gain was 4 years ago, from different medications, and gained 40 pounds in the first 3 months, and more after, bringing me over 200 pounds. These medicines effect motivation, metabolism and increase appetite like crazy. (among other undesirable side effects) I lost about 30 pounds since cutting the meds in half since then, but this last 40 has been impossible ...for me.
My husband became diabetic about 2 years ago. We immedietly changed our eating lifestyle. Removed sugar, whole dairy, red meat, white flour, snacks from our house hold and started exercise routines and portion control. He lost 70 pounds, I lost 4. ...ugh. Granted, he exercised harder and was better at portion control, but still, 4 pounds?! My last serious effort was about 3 months ago, serious calorie intake, increased activity and exercise, and after 3 weeks, I gained 3 pounds!
My defeated attitude is not for nothing, however... I feel so miserable with this extra weight I have decided I can't accept it. So, here goes... but this time I am going to try to do some things different.
