mskestrela's Journal, 18 July 2016

This is a follow-up of yesterday's entry. Thanks to the input of my great friends here, I've decided to do some deeper investigating.
I just entered a full day of what I typically ate in my food diary. I would have considered this a major food day, and it topped out at just over 1400 kcal for the day, including 2 rum and diet cokes. No wonder my metabolism is low! I've been basically undereating for a very long time, and my dear body just adapted to that.
So, I'm not overly concerned about getting enough calories now. And I'm ok with my calorie need being somewhere around 1400-1600 for maintenance, because as I have said, it has been several years since my capacity for food has shrunk, so it won't be a challenge to stay there. People must have thought I was a closet binge-er to maintain so much fat, when they saw me eat so little. If I went out to dinner, all I would have would be an appetizer, and rarely finish it before feeling too full. Invariably, whoever I was with would look at me in astonishment, and say, "Is that ALL you're having??"
My hope is that I can repair the insulin resistance through LCHF and fasting.
I also think that since I've had an almost constant 18:6 IF pattern in my adult life, I need to change it up some, and do longer fasts to reset my insulin levels.
But now I realize, at a gut level, that since this has been going on at least 30 years, it will take a long time to fix.
Thank you again, FS Community, for all your valuable insights and suggestions.
The adventure continues! ~Kes
P.S. I deleted the sample food entry. It was, for anyone who's curious, coffee with half&half and stevia in the morning, a Wendy's Jr bacon cheese burger with small fries and small sweet tea for lunch, and 2 oz of angel hair pasta with 2 tbs of butter and 2 tbs of Parmesan cheese, and 2 rum and diet cokes for dinner.

The bottom line is you feel your metabolism has adapted to VLCD and this is why you gain weight on 1200 kcal? That makes sense. From listening to Dr. Fung, I got the impression that some people NEED longer fast periods to see results, depending on how messed up their hormones are to begin with. Will be interesting to see where you go from here.

Yes, Lady, that's it in a nutshell. I'll be playing with different fasts over the next few weeks, including the new moon fast with you. Please keep me updated on when you plan to start. :)

All I know (that which is true for ME) is that when my carbs are too high (for MY level of insulin resistance) I will gain and it doesn't matter if the calories are low. LCHF and intermittent fasting might help repair the insulin resistance, also getting my weight to a normal level. Atkins mentions that some people develop a hair-trigger response to the least bit of sugar (carb), flooding the body with too much insulin. I suspect that part of insulin resistance takes longer to "cure."

Just another note of what I hope is encouragement - you can turn it around in as little as 6 months - maybe not all the weight will go but your metabolism can turn around.

Good observation, Trackin. I ate about 6 little Ritz-Bits crackers a couple of days ago, still under my macros for the day. My weight bumped up about a pound the next day, but it's back down now. I've been pretty strict on carbs for almost 4 months now, so I'm thinking there is some healing going on.

Thanks @abbadabba! I've read that also, but I also know that the longer one has been overweight, the longer it can take to modify it. When I committed to this journey, I knew it was for life, so I'm taking it one day at a time. I appreciate the encouragement!

When I eat extra carbs, I gain. Plain and simple for me.

Getting in the game puts you in front of most people, don't sweat it. Persistence is key, if one thing fails to produce the results you're looking for, regroup and try a different approach. Burn through the research, keep what's effective and discard the rest, as you said, it's a lifetime commitment.

I'm interested to see where the fasting goes over the next few weeks. I'm thinking I might have the same hair trigger thing going on because I ate a few really sweet plums last week. They were really good, but might have messed things up. Good luck

I'm still finding where my sweet spot is, HCB. And, Phil, that's pretty much what I'm doing. I just shocked my body with a potato...LOL. I don't think it's enough to take me out of keto, so we'll see what that does. I plan on fasting now for 24 hours. Tweaking and tinkering, seeing what's what.

it's tough

Now that I know you want to join me, I should schedule it correctly. The correct way is to fast 4 days before and the day of the new moon or the full moon. You are planning to fast a full five days?
18 Jul 16 by member: LadyinDenim
@Lady, yes, ma'am! I think the most I've done was 41 hours, and it wasn't difficult at all. Not that it's any comparison, but from what I've been reading, the big benefits of autophagy and growth hormone release don't happen until after the 48+ hour mark. I'm VERY interested to see what that does!

Ms Kes, Your food list consists of low quality nutrition. You may be hitting your macros, but the food is junk food! I think you will be feeling better and turning things around when you are eating real vegetables and high quality meat. It's not just about quantity and calories, but about nutritional content. Check into dietdocoter, Dr. Hyman, Dr. Mercola. Pasta, diet coke, rum, Wendy's..... really? You're not taking care of the nutritional quality of the food you are choosing. That's what needs a deeper investigation. You deserve better! This is a SAD diet, just reduced. Break out and turn on to real food! Find a farmer's market and make a stir fry with fresh vegetables. I wish I were nearby, I'd cook you a meal! Your body may be craving real nutrition! I wish you vibrant health!

Just my two cents, but the quality of the food you are eating is concerning. Fast food, diet soda, pasta, and alcohol coupled with negligible vegetables can be contributing more to your metabolism issues than anything else. Fasting is a personal choice, but coupling that with an unhealthy diet when you do eat seems not only doomed to fail, but also dangerous. Please know that I am not trying to be harsh. I am truly concerned.

ROFL! Thanks for your concern @Erika and @Sierra. That is absolutely sound advice! Fortunately for all of us, that was just a *SAMPLE DIET* of what I might typically eat before I decided to change my WOE. For the last 4 months, I have been eating whole, clean, and as much as possible, unprocessed foods. I cook for myself daily, and I'm a pretty darned good cook, too ;) Still, Erika, I'd LOVE you to come cook for me! It's always better when someone else does the cooking. I hope this allays your fears a little. You can check out my food diary for the last few months. I've recorded everything, and precisely.

Whew! What a relief! I was truly concerned for your health, and surprised, knowing how much you have researched. Thanks for straightening me out and clarifying my misunderstanding.

I wrestled with whether to lay it on straight or be polite. At least you know that my concern for your health weighed more heavily in my decision than concern for my fear of offending you! LOL Glad you are eating so well, afterall! Please forgive my bluntness!

For future reference, I strongly prefer blunt honesty! I'm glad that your concern made you speak out. If I were still eating that way, I sure as heck wouldn't be concerned about my metabolism. LOL! Yesterday's post was about only eating 1-2 times a day, and it got me curious about how much I DID typically eat. I decided to plug in some daily typicals to see what was up, and boy, did that surprise me! BUT, it also became clear why my weight hovered around 200 lbs for years, in spite of eating a whole lot less than anyone I knew. Answers are trickling in. When you know what the problem is, you can start looking for the answers. I love you for your bluntness and your concern, dear Erika!
