Steven Lloyd's Journal, 07 May 2016

Warning...this post is taking a break from my diet and normal weight loss journalling to update and let my FS buddies and others here on the site know of a current bad situation affecting some family members, close friends and neighbors.

Some of you may already know this but for those that don't;  I live in a nice country called Canada, in a province (think state) called Alberta...where agriculture and oil production are the prime drivers of our economy...right now we have been hard hit economically as the world wide low oil prices have severely "downsized" every business directly and indirectly affected by the current economic conditions.  This has hit all of us in the Province, some more than others, Fort McMurray, a city in the North of our province has been particularly hard hit.

Now the really bad news...just recently a small brush fire started near Fort McMurray, one of our largest northern cities...these things happen through human negligence and also natural causes.  The wind picked up and shifted, pushing the fire towards the city and expanding the small brush fire into an uncontrolled, rapidly moving forest fire.  Residents were forced to evacuate with very little notice, piling whatever they could into vehicles and heading out of the city on the only hiway heading south (before it branched into two hiways miles to the south).

Right now between 85,000 and 90,000 people have been evacuated and currently the town has been very hard hit with the fires still raging out of control...the wind and the very dry forests have combined for blast furnace effect...Chad Morrison, Alberta Wildfire Official is predicting that the Ft Mac fire is expected to double in size by late tonight.  My son in law, part of a skeleton crew at a work site to the North of Ft Mac was evacuated by air late last night.

Other fires have also started, prompting recent evacuation orders near Ft. St. John, British Columbia, Northeast of where my Fat Secret buddy, Northernmusicion lives.

Just needed to share this news, if you are so inclined, please pray for the people affected and for safety for the firefighters...if not so inclined, then please hold these people in your thoughts...

We all have burdens to bear, some more than others, take care all....Steven

I know the Fires have been bad. As I live in Alaska, our firefighters are in Canada helping out as you Canadians have done with us over the years. Our prayers and thoughts always with you.

Our blessings are with them! Fires have ravaged our state of California over the years. Australia has been practically burned out over the years. I wish we could get people on the same environmental page, but bad politics wins out every time. It is a huge problem, that never gets better. Sorry to hear that, Steven.

Steven, I've been following this on the US National news. The loss of homes, wildlife and natural beauty is heartbreaking and devastating. I had heard that due to winds picking up, it was expected to grow today but I hadn't heard the figure of doubling. My prayers are definitely with all of you in the area to be safe, prayers for containment soon and for rain! I've lived in an area that boarders National Forest land. The peacefulness of it is something that is indescribable. And the devastation you feel when it's destroyed is gutwrenching.

I was living in SoCal when I could see the wildfires from my front door as ash rained down like snow. That fire was nothing in comparison, only burned down half of Laguna Beach. What the people in the Fort McMurray area are now going through is horrifying. I'm glad your son-in-law got out safely.

When the summers are really dry here in East Texas we get wild fires. I live right in the middle of three National Forests and it's pretty common. Nature is a beast and witnessing a wildfire consume thousands of acres is right up there on par with any other natural disaster. Prayers for your community, brother.

Thanks KP and Phil, we get fires (and large fires) almost every year as it is part of natures way, we have a large aerial firefighting base about 6 miles from our home. This one is really bad, unprecedented in our history.

I feel for you. Back in 2012 in Creek County Oklahoma where I live some drunken Indians started a wildfire just around the corner from our home. We lost so much in that fire. Our 30 acres looked like a nuclear bomb hit it. Lost our home, personal possessions and some animals. That fire burned over 500 families out of their homes and destroyed over 150 businesses. They just arrested the guy that was responsible last Monday. Good Luck to you Steven in recouping from the fire damages. We are still recovering from ours. The one most positive factor in all the tragedy is we still have our lives!

So sorry to hear that Little Oyster, but so true, things can be replaced. Our family and I are relatively unaffected other than how we see our friends, neighbors and fellow Albertan's livelihoods, personal belongings and memories being consumed. So easy to put ourselves in their shoes and feel their pain...so far the only loss of life was on the highway during the evacuation process, that was a sad day too!!

Just another note, I have been watching the news on the fires up there and I have been praying for all who live there and for all the people involved in fighting those fires. I have the upmost respect for those who put themselves in harms way to protect others! I'm glad your son-in-law made it out safely. Many prayers again!
