Dog Food

Just picked up the dog from the groomer. He has been on Doggy Atkins - grain free food - for over 2 years. The groomer was commenting on how beautiful his coat is. The only supplements he gets is an occasional fish oil capsule.

In case you are wondering where I am going with this - I have seen more than one comment on how Atkins causes hair loss. All I can say is that I have nice thick full hair, and apparently, so does my dog.

My mom has been making her own dog food for years. It's protein based, she adds pumpkin and veggies, but she does use brown rice too. No corn though..

Is it specifically Atkins that causes the hair loss or the lack of nutrition because people are not taking supplements? Not that you aren't getting nutrition on Atkins but because some of the vitamins and minerals that we need are found in the fruits and veggies that are not on plan? I am only asking because everyone I know who does Atkins has beautiful hair lol

I have no problem with hair loss...my hair has always been very fine, and if I lose any it will show in a heartbeat! lol I think that there are some out there that will do or say anything to discredit the low carb lifestyle! lol

I have never heard that, I think I have more hair since starting Atkins & healthier, shinier hair too. I do take supplements every day, always have.

I have heard low-carb = mental fatigue and hair loss but I have never particularly seen it on anyone I know IRL... I really think its a nother one of those myths to be honest. Also Buffy, my dog won't eat anything processed - I tried when she was a puppy and she would rather go hungry so now when I make dinner... she gets home made dog food lol

I don't do Atkins, but just thought this was interesting. I would think that anyone doing Atkins and having hair loss are maybe doing it the wrong way. Maybe to them Atkins=low carb=only eat lettuce. If they aren't eating the right things for their body to survive, it's going to start fighting them. Wow, I didn't even know hair loss was a concern for anyone on Atkins.

Buffy I had to fix boiled chicken for my dog along with breen beans and brocoli...I would also fix her some ground beef she also had to take a vitamin...she was diabetic and had thyroid issues...along with addisons...she loved veggies...LOL...I was feeding her those little bags of soft food as they had most of what she needed and then she got very sick and they had a recall on those pouches of dog food...they were poisoned with rat killer...thats why I started cooking for her myself...she lived 5 more years after that...so I must a did something right...LOL...Enjoy your full head of hair and congrats on your dogs hair as well..........Bren

I have found that I lose hair whenever my body is rapidly losing weight. I don't know if this happens to everyone, but it's probably not isolated to Atkins diets. I do eat a very varied and nutritious diet. :)

Icy - that is the kind of stuff that is in his food. Some brands add a little oatmeal too.

Pixi - Some people (on a variety of diets) eat such crap it is a wonder they are alive at all.

Stef - I noticed on the internet they are making the same kinds of claims against Primal now.

GG - OK - I'll accept your challenge!

mars2kids - Nice to meet you. I agree. I know someone who thought Atkins was tossed salad with bacon bits. No wonder people don't stick with their weight loss plans.

Buffy, we had to change my dogs' food due to the manufacturer of the previous one changing formulas and letting store shelves go empty. The verdict is still out on the new food, as far as their coats are concerned, so we'll just have to wait and see. As far as people's hair...the only ones I'm aware of that had that problem (excluding previous posters) were typically eating less than 700 calories. I assumed they were losing hair due to starvation.

Bren - I remember that horrible scare! I made my own pet food for months after that. I know you were a good Mommy.

didiharris - Thank you for stopping by. Unfortunately, I've never lost weight quickly no matter what diet I was on. But I could see that happening during extreme weight loss.

Sandy - I know you are a good Mommy too. To be truthful, I started this because he developed an allergy to corn - which I found out later is very common. But now I'm seeing other benefits too.

GG & Pixi - Didn't mean to leave you two out - I think you are both good Mommys too!

My little shih-tzu is allergic to corn and wheat, so none for her either. and her hair feels like silk! don't listen to other people. most of the time they don't know what they are talking about anyway!
