Johanne's Journal, 03 October 2014

The storms are past but it's still very dark out there, the temp dropped 30 degrees and it's windy. Fall has definitely arrived. I need to get the plants in today. We're getting frost tonight. I'm very happy to have my "daylight" bulbs. This morning, it's the 3rd. I'm off to shop and fend off all the other little old people who also get their SS checks on the third. It's a rush for the electric carts! LOL! I'd wait but I'm out of EVERYTHING!!! See you all later. I need veggies!

7:00 pm, I'm back from Wally-World. The battle for the carts was epic. I got yelled at by the young lady behind me in the parking lot, for waiting for someone to back out of a handicapped spot. I never realized how many people use the Walmart check cashing service (it's Friday, as well as the 3rd). It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World!

No sh#t, there I was, freezing my a$$ off, and I stumbled upon a new shipment of Cuddl Duds! What's a broke, little old lady to do? I bought some, of course! One pair is a rather loud pair of paisley fleece. This little old lady gots style!!!

I'm on my way out to cover the tender plants and bring in the hibiscus's. Oh, my! I just looked out the window and it's suddenly dark. When did that happen?

Brr! Sounds like you have the same weather as me - I couldn't believe the wind this morning - yikes! The high school football game will be mighty cold tonight! Good luck battling the "other little old people"... hahaha... I'd put my money on you! :)

I've seen a few of those epic cart battles. Frightening. I wish it was done raining here. It's raining just hard enough that I'm soaked.

Erika, I don't know where you are. I'm in Missouri but I believe this same cold front was huge and caused quite a bit of damage. The sun is finally out but the wind hasn't abated. I'm in a full sweat suit!

We are getting that storm today in southern Ontario. Rain, high winds, temp. dropping. Sweater time for sure.

Other than an earthquake a few weeks back, nothing exciting so far here. Have a good one :)

I'm in Minnesota - we didn't have any big storms, but it's definitely dropped down to the 30's and is very windy and grey today!

My hibiscus are planted into the ground - do I need to dig them up or can I just cover them for the winter?

Bella, if they are tropical hibiscus, the really bright colored ones, I believe they can take low temps to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Older than that, they need to come in. Mine have to come in.

Johanne you crack me up! The shorts are on the shelf but the door is not closed. I'm still putting money on global warming.

Johanna, where are you in MO that you had frost? I'm in independence it was 38 sat am but no frost, tons of rain last Thursday though.

I guess I really need to work on bringing plants in this week and cutting back the herbs. Really should have cut the herbs a few weeks ago, didn't. Average first frost is October 15, it's sneaking up on me quickly.

Wholefood, I'm just east of you in Odessa. It was 35 at my house Sat morning . . . no frost, but cold enough I was glad I covered plants and brought in the Hibiscis's. I need to get the scented geraniums, Rosemaries and lemon verbena in. I also have a few air plant varieties I plan to bring in.

Not far at all!! Used to go to the outlet mall there before most of the stores closed. Hibiscus and geraniums are pretty cold sensitive, they are so pretty. I need to get the rosemary dug up tomorrow and a few other herbs before the cold returns on Thursday. No cold sensitive perennials besides herbs, everything else is cold hardy. Enjoy a warm tomorrow, wish I could play hookie.
