Good morning everyone! Why isn't it Friday yet?? First full week with kids back in school and we are all tuckered out!

I kicked some serious bum at the never ending potluck last night. Everyone brought junk and competed to see which one was worst for you... oh my. I took some store bought banana bread, not too bad at 140 cal/slice but I didn't have any. I have extra here at home for the husband and kids, I'm not a real big banana bread fan. I chose to eat three pinwheels that were so good I had to get the recipe, and I had a handful of fresh veggies as another student took a veggie tray. Everyone ate and talked and ate and talked for like two freaking hours. My teacher didn't have anything planned for the evening and couldn't let us leave early or she would get in trouble. She's a crappy teacher. A new girl, never taught before, and is more concerned with people liking her than actually instructing a class. Nonetheless, I did well and I'm proud.

Making some cinnamon butter to go on my sweet potato tonight and I'm so excited about it lol. I'm using real unsalted butter. Trying to keep everything as natural as possible, and as it turns out all of those trans fats in the processed 'not real butter but tastes like the salty goodness you're used to' crap is way worse for you than the saturated fat in real made from cream butter. I don't add extra sugar to my sweet potatoes, which reminds me... My mom and grandma are always loading up my kids potatoes with butter and salt, and sweet potatoes with butter and brown sugar. The last time I made sweet potatoes I gave it to my kids plain and they devoured it. Why are we programming our kids to like all the crappy extras?? It's how I was raised too, but my tastes have changed since I went healthy and sweet potatoes now taste insanely sweet to me just the way they are. So tonight I'm just adding some cinnamon to some real butter for extra flavor and using that on the sweet potato, yum yum.

Speaking of the kids, they can't get enough of my green smoothies. It's what they have every day after school for a snack. I'm happy (especially with all the viruses going around) that they're getting so many vitamins and minerals from fresh produce daily. Trying to influence them as positively as possible.

As we go into baking season, all things pumpkin and all things delicious, I am remembering all the things I learned during my first year of living nutritionally conscious through the holidays. The first thing I learned, make everything only once and make it count! Why on gods green earth do I need four pumpkin rolls? It doesn't become a treat, it becomes it's own food group... like that 2/3 cup of pumpkin in one whole roll is enough to consider it a vegetable. Don't get me wrong, I will bake them for my friends and family, but this household (much to my husband and children's dismay) will only be keeping one of them. It is a treat, and to be enjoyed as such. Timing needs to be perfect on this one lol. I'm thinking of doing one treat for Halloween, one treat for thanksgiving, and of course cookies for Christmas. Unlike last year at Christmas, I will only be baking two types of cookies (they will have to choose wisely) and only one batch, and they will be baked the week of Christmas. No more 13 dozen cookies the first week of December lol. I did my usual last year and managed to refrain from gobbling them all down, and then I thought... why does my family need so much junk?? They don't. It doesn't seem a treat when it's available to you all the time, so this is my way of trying to make them more of a special thing and not a holiday season requirement.

So what's on my agenda for today? I don't know yet. Since school started up I think this is the first day I have woke without a list of things I had to accomplish. I think I will play around with some of the new fitness things on our xbox for exercise, along with some kettle bell moves. I'm washing laundry and just hanging around the house I guess. Test tonight so I suppose I should review a little. I think I'm more than prepared. I think the whole class is considering she practically handed us the answers for memorization. Should be at least a dozen 100%'s tonight.

I think that's all I've got for now. This week is almost over, thank god. Hope everyone is well :)

It's great that your kids like your green smoothies. As a kid veggies were my least favorite food, I always ate fruits though. I never heard of adding sugar to the sweet potatoes?!

Must be an American thing :) even in restaurants here they will load up baked sweet potatoes with sugar and cinnamon unless your order it plain.

Glad that you enjoyed your class last night, and sorry your teacher is not what you expected. It's hard to get good teachers sometimes. But as long as you have your book, and the internet, you can stay on top of your game. I guess the company that came out with "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter," was truly fooling us all the time too.

I love sweet potatoes, but my family doesn't, so it's usually just me eating them and I like them with just a little cinnamon. You're right they are pretty sweet on their own, and yummy! I've been seeing all of the apple and pumpkin recipes popping up and everything sounds good, but like you I'm trying to keep it simple and not over do it. Last year for Christmas we baked tons of cookies and made some bars, but we gave a bunch to neighbors, work, family, and friends and kept a little bit for ourselves. That's probably what I'll do again, or send cookies to places that might be able to use them for the elderly or the homeless, then at least someone will enjoy them and I won't have the guilt of eating them all. Good luck tonight!

Yo, I TOTALLY agree that keeping junk around the house, or excess food, is just programmed. We used to know a family of three people who kept two giant refrigerators (one in the house and one in the garage) AND a full-size freezer all stocked to the brim with food (most of it junk). It was always so shocking to me - why would 3 people need that much, ever?! No surprise, the family's health was so poor. I completely admire that you're taking steps toward the wellness of your entire family. Program those healthy habits in them early and they'll benefit the rest of their lives :)

Awesome job at eating right at the potluck! I commend you on getting your kids to enjoy eating the right way. Sounds like a great plan for the holidays. I used to do a candied yam casserole for Thanksgiving and Christmas with brown sugar, butter, and honey. My daughters upped it with browned marshmallows on top. Talk about a sugar bomb! Shouldn't mention the fruit pies, cookies, and cakes. Obviously, I don't do that anymore. No one seems to miss my cooking sprees :) Yay for veggie trays and fruit trays. I let others do the other sweets if they feel like it. I do enjoy a half of a sweet potato with cinnamon on it, though super seldom.

Great plans for your Holiday treat season. I am lucky I do not have to bake for family so I can mostly avoid it.

I thought of you as I made a smoothie this morning but DUH until JUST now I forgot I did have spinach in the fridge .. dangit. I was all like 'well, this should be good, banana, yogurt, fresh pineapple, protein powder and coffee with a little espresso powder... more like a brown smoothie. No vegs. Duh duh duh. But on the other hand it's been very filling and I've not been hungry for anything else all day so ... it's a draw. That's it.. it's probably the spinach that makes me hungrier. Yeah, sure...
