Kathy Vanish's Journal, 05 July 2014

My 5K on Thursday night went great. I made both of my race goals. I ran the entire thing, even the hill in the middle, and finished faster than my time for my previous 5K.

For my 5K in May I finished 109 out of 145, 20 out of 26 in my age bracket with a total time of 39:21.7 which is a 12:42 mins/mile.

This 5K I finished 101 out of 143, 17 out of 26 in my age bracket with a total time of 38:58:99 which was a 12:34 mins/mile.

Now you might be thinking that that isn't much of a change or improvement, but it is 1 min and 3 seconds faster and my mins/mile are 8 seconds faster. My main goal was to run this whole race as I had to walk a mile of my last one and I did that.

The next morning I got on the internet and found a few more races I am thinking of running now. Now that I am running the entire 5K, I am now going to work on my speed. I plan on doing better in each race I compete in.

I will admit today I am really sore and I think it's because I didn't get much of a chance to run or exercise at all the week of the race due to a packed travel schedule.

On the food front. I am still losing a pound a week and sticking to under 1500 calories. At my last journal, some of you were worried I wasn't getting enough calories. It took me a little bit of time to figure out with a low fat diet where to find those extra calories, but I am now steady between 1200 and 1500. A few days were higher, but I haven't gone above my 1900 RDI assigned by fatsecret yet so that is good. I am definitely getting my portion sizes under control and that is helping a lot.

Also, when I travel I no longer stop for fast food. I take baggies full of carrots, grapes, an apple, and cheese. If my husband wants to stop he can and if I buy anything it is a smoothie. It's amazing how many less calories you can squeeze out by eliminating that fast food element. My husband actually is now requesting carrots, pepperoni, and cheese to be taken along and isn't stopping either. He is also talking about starting to train to run with me. We'll see!

Hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July!

Hello Kathy! your runs are showing a tremendous improvement! you ran all the way including hill work and that is something! Hats off to you! You're too early to work on speed, keep working on form, how you hold yourself, how you breath, how you move your legs and arms, with the right form, speed will come by itself. Just practice leaning forward and circling your legs as if you were on a bicycle...you will find it hard to stop! If hubby will join you on the run it will be fantastic, you can keep each other motivated... and as for the food choices, fantastice! i see your weight chart just going down! keep up the good work!

Excellent point regarding the fast food. We have got to imagine that this stuff does not exist. Take care!
