Djburney's Journal, 22 January 2013

Lets see...I drink wine, I gain weight. I don't drink wine, I lose weight. Hmmm....starting to see a pattern here. And I don't like it.

But like it or not, it's reality. I want to lose this last 25-35 lbs so badly. I love the way it feels to be thinner. It's better for my knees, my heart, my confidence, my career, my dating life, my overall happiness. For a long time before my knee surgery, I couldn't get up off the floor without a lot of arm strength and heavy furniture to boost myself. I've recently discovered that I can get up without the furniture now. For you young ones, just know that it is a pretty big deal. That means I could try yoga, without feeling like an idiot in the middle of the floor, not being able to get off my mat.

I just wrote that so I will have it for later if I ever go back and read these journal entries. Reminding myself how much better life is now.

It does suck when there's something we love to drink and we a pattern in it and not in a good way. I was like that w/my cappuccino that I love dearly! It's just getting down to treating yourself every now and then and just sticking to a glass of it. So far in my experience, one cup of cappuccino has not made me put back on 1 lb of what I've lost, but I keep it to that one cup and I've made sure that the rest of my day is my normal eating day. I don't blow the whole day over one treat. Good luck at your school meeting today!

What kind of wine are you drinking? There are some low cal/low carb wines out there that are good and don't seem to affect me at all.

Smile at the school board! When you do, you radiate confidence. I know this by looking at your photos - so imagine the power in real time! LOL, glad you saw a drop. Wine is fermented grapes - some people react to the fermentation.

Giving up wine doesn't have to be forever. Think of it as a reward to look forward to! But I'm glad you are seeing some movement in the downward direction on the scale. Happy days!

I drink pretty good wine, can't stand the cheap stuff. My favorite is cab, which is low carb itself, but there is something else going on besides the carbs. Probably just alcohol in general, I just don't drink much except wine and an occasional vodka/soda. I know it's not forever, but I just need to learn how to socialize without it. @HCB-I'm a smiler, that's for sure! I have a story to tell today that is not a happy one, about kids in trouble, so I probably won't smile while I'm telling it :-) This weight loss has given me tons of confidence!

Alcohol is also a big no no for me and for two reasons: One - it stops the metabolism of fat. It's true that it doesn't cause fat by itself but it it will prevent the body from accessing the fat storage. Wine is better than beer and vodka pr any other liquor is better than wine but that's like comparing filtered and unfiltered cigarettes and declaring that since filtered are better it means we can smoke more. The second reason is a little unknown fact that alcohol tolerance decrease on a low carb diet. I can get hammered and slammed on a single pint of beer, something that would never happen two years ago. So if you have to drive after socializing, take what you used to drink before going low carb, divide it by 3 and stick to this.

To drink, or not to drink, that is the question.. I'm Irish, so there can be only one answer for me, save yourselves. I think there is a happy compromise, that if the alcohol truly stops the metabolism of fat, which I do believe I've read, then maybe the thing to do is not have a drink every day, save the glass of wine or two for the weekends. As far as the meeting today, given your recent successes I'm sure they will take whatever you are offering, if they due the drinks, whenever you do drink again, are on you.

The other hidden menace of alcohol is that if I drink too much (which happens quicker than it used to, thanks to the low carb diet - see Catskinner's comment), I throw out good judgment on food choices. That being said, I did have a glass of sake today after the session with my dad. I am sure the scale will show it tomorrow. You don't seem to have this problem because when it comes to food, you have an iron will, hehe.

I think for me it s the sugars. It really makes a difference for me to limit my fruit. I feel like I gain with wine but not with vodka or gin. I love that you re chochoosing a skinny future. Even if for a little while you give up something you enjoy.
