Atkins misconceptions
To add my own thought on Atkins or any low carbohydrate diet. Your cells in your body choose glucose as their first line food. It is easily metabolized and the only by product is lactic acid. When your body runs out of glucose, it needs to make some. This process is called gluconeogenesis. All that means is that your body is using other sources to produce glucose. When fat is utilized as the food source, the waste product is ketone bodies, or ketones. Any one losing fat weight is producing and burning ketones. That includes almost everyone on this web site. When your body has no fat to burn, the process will then burn proteins. The reason that you need to eat an adequate amount of protein during any diet is that all tissues in your body require proteins for repair, replacement and maintenance. By eating too little protein, your body will rob protein from muscles to repair and maintain.
If you limit your carbohydrates and eat enough protein, your body must burn fat to supply energy. If you limit the amount of fat that you take in, you will metabolize fat. I hope this doesn't sound too technicalSmile
