How to Use the Smart Assistant
Logging your food is one of the most effective ways to stay aware of your calorie intake, but entering every ingredient individually can take time.
The Premium Smart Assistant makes this process much easier by allowing you to log an entire meal at once using voice or text. Simply describe what you ate and the Smart Assistant will identify the foods and add them to your Diary for you. This makes it much easier to stay consistent with food logging, even on busy days.
How to Log Meals Using the Smart Assistant
Follow the steps below to log a meal using the Premium Smart Assistant.
Step 1: Launch the Smart Assistant
Start on your Diary page and tap the + button on the meal you would like to log. This will open the food add page.
From the food add page, tap the Smart Assistant icon to launch the Smart Assistant. Alternatively, you can tap Log meals with your voice on the Premium homepage to open the Smart Assistant.
When the Smart Assistant opens, you will see:
- The meal you are about to log (which you can change if needed)
- A text field where you can type your meal
- A green microphone button you can use to describe your meal using voice

Step 2: Describe Your Meal
Enter your meal using either voice or text.
To use voice:
- Tap the microphone button.
- Describe your meal. As you speak, your words will appear in the text box.
- If you need to stop temporarily, tap the pause icon.
- Tap the microphone button again to continue speaking.
If needed, you can tap the edit icon next to the text to make changes using the keyboard.
To use text:
- Tap the grey text box
- Type out your meal
If you want to start again, tap the trash icon to clear your entry when using voice or text.

Step 3: Submit Your Meal
Once you have finished describing your meal, tap the ‘send’ arrow (in the bottom right of the text box) to submit your meal. The Smart Assistant will start to analyze your entry and match the foods to items in the fatsecret database.

Step 4: Add the Meal to Your Diary
Review the foods that have been matched and tap Add to Meal to log them to your Diary.
Before adding the meal, you can:
- Unselect foods that are not correct matches
- Tap cancel to return and edit your meal description
If the quantity or serving size needs adjusting, you can easily edit the foods later from your Diary.

Tips for Better Results
Log Your Entire Meal at Once
The Smart Assistant works best when you describe all foods in your meal together, rather than entering each item separately.
For example:
"I had a bowl of oats with one cup of full cream milk and a banana."
Include Detail Where Possible
Adding details such as quantity, serving size, or brand names can help the Smart Assistant find more accurate matches.
For example:
"I had 2 slices of Brand Name white bread with 1 cup of Brand Name full cream milk."
If you don’t include a brand name, the Smart Assistant will look for a generic food match instead.
Include Quantities
If possible, include quantities or portions such as cups, slices, tablespoons, or pieces. This helps the Smart Assistant estimate the serving size more accurately.
For example:
"I had 1 cup of cooked rice with 100g of grilled chicken and half an avocado."
