He is doing better?

Liv001 Thanks for asking. He's not much better. He's not puking or 💩 all over anymore from the pancreatitis. Doc wanted him on rice and chicken or low fat beef. He likes that. He had a full GI panel. Xrays and they came back normal. He is up at night, like he's in pain, yesterday he was snorting and breathing oddly. I had to carry him on our walk. I'm building muscle carrying him! Today, I pushed him in his stroller for both my walks, 8500 steps. He walked a little. My vet has all the info and we'll talk Monday about a plan. I don't know what to do. He's on prednisone now and something to help his tummy. #MUSTLOVEDOGS

Poor baby :(

Sadie made it 9 years w/pancreatitis on Honest Kitchen Whole Grain Beef dehydrated food. Super low fat at 11%, further reduced by adding white rice. You add warm water. There are crazy amounts of fat in the different dog food brands and some dogs just don’t do well with it.

For clarity, that is not intended to be instead of vet advice.

Katsolo, i just looked at that food. It looks decent. The diet I'm giving him is for the accute phase. Chicken and rice low fat is fine. I think you mean he needs more nutrients long term. We haven't gotten to that yet. Thanks. I'm sorry you lost your pup. We don't know what's going on really. It was pancreatitis but labs don't show it now. My vet has gone through 5 dogs with me over the years. They are often like human doctors. No little big food/pharma nutrition knowledge. I believe dogs should be on their species specific diet but at this point, anything he can digest easily for now.

Correct, you have to get through the acute phase first and that’s low fat and easily digestible foods like chicken and rice. The food I mentioned will help avoid future attacks, but you have to watch out for other things as well. It’s a journey.

Katsolo thanks! Did your dog have similar symptoms?i won't ever give him his old food. It was high quality but like you said. Too high fat for him.

She almost died of pancreatitis four different times as in ER. It didn’t take a lot- think fried chicken wing. After the first one, the rest were things that she got without my knowledge, treats that were snuck to her, etc. symptoms for her were shaking, lethargy, hiding and vomiting bile. She didn’t get diarrhea because the vomiting hit her more quickly than anything else. She got extremely dehydrated very quickly and her heart rate was erratic one time. She was a medium size dog, I can imagine how scary it would be with a smaller dog. X ray doesn’t work, ultrasound will save you some steps. She did great on the ultra low fat diet. Eight years from original diagnosis.

Katsolo thank you so much for sharing! Tigger almost died. He was coming out of both ends. He also had a stroke last fall and a hematoma in his eye. Poor little guy. I have an emergency IV and meds if he gets an episode on Sundays. He was coming out of both ends. He had an ultrasound. The xray was to eliminate any possible obstructions. I'll get that food! Thank you. I only adopt seniors so I expect medical problems. This has been tough. He does love going on walks in his stroller 🤣
