Has anyone doing a lchf diet and/or intermittent fasting experienced kidney aches? On and off the last 2 days I’ve had aches in my lower back, kidney area—both sides. It’s not really painful just annoying. Any advice?

Nope! I feel great otherwise. Trying to decide if it’s muscular or actually coming from kidneys...

are you getting enough fluid and electrolytes?
Definitely drinking enough water but a little worried about the electrolytes. I’ve been trying to add salt and bought some lite salt today for potassium. I also bought natural calm for magnesium—I’ll start that tonight. How does everyone get these levels right??

If you are doing LCHF you need sodium too. Two cups of salty broth or bouillon per day is recommended.

momma.l read your bio and your talking about think your much protein.well it sounds like to me your kidneys are stressing out trying to filter out the protein, excess protein head's straight to the kidneys and the signs are lower back ache, not muscle but inside. you see protein plays hell on them.a urine test for protein spillage will tell how much and what % your kidneys have dropped now there is a good chance your kidneys could jump back to their original number if not then that's your new starting number for filtering.so the pain will stop if you cut back on the protein.do you know the amount daily you've been doing..lm curious...l checked your weight and your top amount daily show not exceed 48grm if you can to help your do like 30grms for a while to give them a break. if you have any more concerns feel free to contact me.

I was eating way more protein than I realized—between 60-90 some days. Thank you murphthesurf! I will cut back and see if that helps.

is your pee soapy appearing? like little suds forming as you pee?
05 Feb 18 by member: kearamccardle
No, urine looks normal 🙂 very light in color no suds

Try drinking 2 liters plain water or water with lemon for a couple days. No coffee. No tea. This may be kidney stones that need to be flushed out. If pain continues, go to the doctor.

It would be interesting to find out how they get the potassium up since it`s very important for everyone but specifically low carb dieters. I know that acorn squash is high and I saw avocado except that I hate avocado. The only fruit that I hate!! I saw that they sell them as pills but there is only 100 mg and it looks like we need 4500 or a little less. Spinach is quite high in magnesium. I need to add more sodium as well since the food I eat does not have any!!

momma, l'm assuming you were feeling the pain from each one and or it feels like it radiates across that whole lower area.little woman like you doing that amount of protein was hurting those babies, you know a kidney isn't that large and plus everything else it's busy cleaning, most definitely they are letting you know that something is wrong.there's an old saying""listen to your body"" so be nice to them for the time being and cut your protein down low for a while and drink plenty of spring water not tap because of the high amounts of chlorine..read the label if says spring water in the front the fine print in the back may say municipal tap water.water is a great cleanser. In a few days your start feeling better.

@Charlotte_15, spinach, avocado, broccoli, yogurt, fatty fish, even pork chops have potassium.

Thank you!! I’m going to back way off the protein and drink lots of water. Hope that clears it up quickly. I really appreciate your help.

Almost forgot it's a good sign if when you urinate you see little or no foam..the amount of foam one might see means the amount of tears within the fabric of the filter of your kidneys.that's called blow through, that foam is pure unfiltered protein.so if you lack that..that's a good sign your filtering mesh is in good shape but your kidneys are working very hard to break it down until eventually with high amounts of protein..the protein will destroy or create holes in the mesh and foam city happens and then your kidneys can't filter any food groups and it poisons your body and that's dialysis is needed three × wk at 4hr.sit in's for the rest of your life.

Charlotte, bananas are a very good source of potassium and they taste good and cheap in price to buy..a banana a day.

Murf, assuming that we require 4700 mg daily give or take. A banana is 358 mg give or take. I just found some information that says that minimum is 2000 mg but Keto needs 3000. I'm not on Keto. Well, 2000 is more feasible. There's just so much sugar in a banana but regardless I will have one day. Thanks!

The secret potassium giver is Yams! (Not Sweet Potatoes, Yams) 1 cup of cubed Yams has over 1200 mgs of potassium. I realize that they're not as Keto friendly as other veggies, but still delicious! 😄

I'll say it one more time -- not to be rude, but because the kind of pain you are desribing can be dangerous! Try reducing your protein and flushing your kidneys with plenty of spring water, San Pelligrino is ok too, also diluted grapefruit juice (mix with San Pelligrino), add lemon or lime to your water because citrate helps dissolve kidney stones. If the problem persists, go to the doctor!
