Fritzy 22's Journal, 21 December 2017

For another day I had approx. 24 hour fast. Had my doctor appointment at 10am so didn't eat or drink anything since I always want my weight as low as possible when I go see him. He was surprised I had lost weight - said it was 16 pounds. I had committed to 15. Actually I lost 16 pounds since I saw him in October, I committed to the 15 in September so actually lost 20 pounds per his scale (with all my clothes and shoes on!) from 189 to 169. But I was a little troubled that my blood pressure was up since my last 2 visits when it was 114/70. Today for some reason it was 128/88. Don't understand that although after the doctor appointment I had my annual appointment with my allergist and they had my BP at 120/80. My doctor told me not to worry about it at this point. But another puzzling thing was cholesterol, mine has always been fine. My total cholesterol went from 177 to 212 and it's supposed to be under 200. And my LDL also went up nearly 20 points and is high at 126 - it's supposed to be under 100. I asked my doctor what could have caused the increase in LDL. I told him I had made a chuck roast which I had for 3 consecutive days, but realized later I made the roast AFTER the lab tests were done. I'm thinking the pound of peanut brittle I consumed in about 2 days may have something to do with it. That happened a couple of days before the lab tests. I had planned on doing a reset on my diet starting January 1st but it may need to be more drastic than I wanted. I asked my doctor what I should not be eating and he said the chuck roast and any animal products have cholesterol, even chicken without the skin, also eggs. I eat a lot of eggs. He said like he always says is to eat lots of vegetables and fruits. And beans and nuts. He said berries were really good. My inflammation is still off the charts high, so overall I'm unhappy with my lab results. Inflammation is at 12.7. It should be under 1.0 for lower relative cardiovascular risk, 1.0-3.0 for average risk, 3.1 -10 for higher risk. So this is at least 3 times it's been more than 10. I am thinking of using up all the meat in the freezer by the end of February (ground beef, pork chops, chuck roast, shrimp) and then try to go vegetarian or even vegan although it may take me awhile to go all the way to vegan. I guess I have to learn to like beans! Sorry this is such a long post. It's just I was looking forward to the doctor appointment assuming I'd have improving lab tests with the weight loss and all the walking I'm doing.

The lab test will fall in line, just like your weight loss did. I was under the impression eggs did not bother your cholesterol I'll have to research. I do know after I stopped eating nightshades, inflammation disappeared. Before you change your woe I would suggest researching. My middle name is google lol. Love you Sis

I google everything too. Just read for cholesterol that if you are healthy have no more than 300mg a day and if you have high cholesterol no more than 200mg. I checked the eggs in the fridge and 1 egg has 185 mg. I've had the high inflammation for well over a year, it was 18 then dropped to 11 when I tried eating like my doctor said, I had no processed foods or drinks for 2 months. Now it's gone up again. What are nightshades (or should I google it?)?

Your post caught my attention because you closely described where I was 2 months ago. I've thought about going vegetarian off & on for years. A family member's doctor recommended watching forks over knives on netflix. He forwarded that message on to the rest of the family & it piqued my curiosity. I had never heard of it before. I turned it on in the background while doing my morning routine & caught the bullet points. In a nutshell, no animal based products, very few processed foods, & no oils. That combination equals very low calorie density. Cutting through the "miracle cure for everything" stuff in the documentary, the basics of calorie density is hard to argue with. Counting calories, food logging, & portion control are actively discouraged. Portion control has always been my problem, so I figured, why not? Just over a month in & my BP is improving, I'm down 16 pounds & I'm eating tons of food. I hope this helps. Best wishes to you.

Patty - I did google it, had never heard the term. Didn't notice mushrooms on the list until I read your 2nd post. I do eat mushrooms and potatoes and sometimes cook chili or soup that has canned tomatoes in it. I think I can give them up but potatoes will be hard and also not having chili or the home made soup I like to make a few times a year. I asked my doctor about eating potatoes and he said it would be better to eat sweet potatoes. Dryphtyr: thanks for the support and information. When you say no oil, do you mean all oil, even olive oil? And does that mean fats, like nuts and avocado?

How is inflammation measured?

You can eat some nuts & avocados, but no oil of any kind. I substitute allergen free dark chocolate chips on recipes that call for grain sweetened chips. Some recipes I've made, call for a little almond butter, peanut butter, cane sugar, or maple syrup. I would recommend watching the documentary if you have netflix. Pay attention when they're talking about calorie density & do what you will with the rest of it. I literally went out the next pay day after seeing it & did a complete overhaul of my grocery list. I also had a 2 week business trip between then & now. I decided going in, if I'm traveling or out with friends, I'd order the healthier options on the menus (chicken & fish included) & try to maintain during those times. Travel is frequent in my job, so I had to make that concession. Needless to say, that trip was essentially a dry run for the future & I only gained 2 pounds over that 2 weeks. When I'm home, I cook. Plain & simple. If you have netflix, watch the documentary & I'll help you out where I can. If you don't, let me know & I'd still be willing to help if you're interested.

Gz9gjg - There's a lab test my doctor orders to check inflammation - CRP C-Reactive Protein (High Sensitivity). That's what the lab slip says. My doctor just says CRP is elevated. Dryphtyr - I don't have Netflix, but what you described is very close to what my doctor has told me. He basically said to eat a mainly plant based diet avoiding processed food, especially processed meats. Today I told him I often eat 1/3 of an avocado chopped up and sprinkle with 1 or 2 tablespoons of chopped walnuts or almonds. He said that was very good and that I can eat more nuts and should be fine. He always wants me to avoid dairy. I don't eat yogurt and rarely have cheese or butter. I will work on reducing and eliminating the skim milk I drink. I asked why he didn't want me to have skim milk and he said because of hormones that are in it and suggested almond milk if I must have milk. I have to take baby steps right now but appreciate the information you've given me and I will follow you because I feel I can learn from you. I am also going to do what Patty suggested, I think I can give up nightshades. Starting January 1st. My reaction to the doctor visit was not what it should be. I stopped at a local fast food taco place and had 2 tacos and a regular coke, rather than diet and bought a bag of barbecue potato chips at the grocery store!

Each person reacts differently - my cholesterol and blood pressure were high prior to starting Keto, now they're not. Keep trying different things... you'll eventually find the right nutritional balance for YOUR particular body. Best of luck to you!

I decided a couple days ago to start posting pics of more of my meals. They don't really fit the norm of what's usually posted on this site. I may even log food some days, but no promises. Best of luck

184 - do you avoid meat, especially processed meats? What about eggs? From what I can see just 1 egg has about the maximum cholesterol allowed in a day if your cholesterol is high. I have a family history of high cholesterol and this is a brand new development for me so I am worried about this. I edited my food tracker on FS to show cholesterol when I log my food. Dryphtyr: thanks, I'll keep an eye out for your posts. I've posted a picture before of a typical breakfast of a hard boiled egg, avocado with chopped nuts, and either cantaloupe or grapefruit. I may still have the egg, but just the white and give the yolk to my dog who loves eggs - I'll have to check with the vet to make it's okay for him to have egg yolks! Thanks everyone for the support. Until now my focus has been just to lose the weight however I can and figured once I got close to my maintenance goal I would pay more attention to how to maintain. I drink a lot of diet soda, and I know that's not okay per my doctor, but it has helped me stick with what I'm doing.

The difficult thing is that everyone’s body is different. What works for one won’t work for another. It seems to me that what you have been doing is working for weight loss. Maybe the best plan is to tweak your woe a bit and keep on trucking to that goal weight. Then you can see what your test results are. This last test could have been a fluke. It is just so hard to know the best thing to do. I will be cheering you on 😊. I know you will figure it out

@Fritzy_22 - I eat meat (sometimes TOO much, days in my Diet Calendar reflect the protein HIGHER than my fats) - I eat whatever's on sale, processed or not; but, I off-set it with enough fiber to keep the Budweiser Clydesdales "regular" (LOL!) Eggs? Well, 1 or 2 about 2 or 3 times a week. It might be that I have NO idea how much (processed) protein heavy (processed and unprocessed) sources I was eating PRIOR to Keto... perhaps.

Thanks everybody! Don't know what I'd do without you. Didn't get to sleep last night until 3am worrying about the inflammation and cholesterol. 184 - good to know you can eat meat and your cholesterol is okay. I've had a year to get used to no processed meats, although I've cheated 2 or 3 times, usually when I go out to breakfast. My situation is inflammation and higher desired LDL and I googled that so will attempt to modify my diet on January 1st.

Eggs are a push on cholesterol speaking as someone who has had sky high cholesterol for over 20 years but only one of my sibs with no arteriosclerosis and no high blood pressure now either. I’m also off blood pressure meds now that I’m making sure I am taking enough magnesium and other trace minerals and eat moderate protein with high emphasis on plant based foods and plant fats. But I don’t diss eggs or butter or cheese or meat used as a flavoring on my vegetables. But my protein drinks are vegetable based (because I really can’t stand to eat that many vegetables and would rather disguise them!) I am off my cholesterol meds as if six months ago because my numbers are in the correct ranges so it is possible to do. Both my parents died of complications of heart disease and cholesterol issues so I take this seriously. My mother had a stroke before dying of complications of Lupus. My brother and sister have both had new arteries branch in their necks because of blockages. Keeping the good white meats and the dark berries with your lectins low will do wonders to keep your cholesterol in bounds. But having enough magnesium in your system whether through supplements or foods will also make a world of difference.
