Hmmmmm....the carb train is still whisking me along in spite of my decision to go back to strict keto. I really, REALLY wanted sushi today, so I went and got some.
The up-side: It was after a 30 hour fast. The down-side: it was 100+ grams of carbs. But it was exactly what I wanted, and it made me very happy. Who knew miso soup was so carby??? Back on beast mode with a 23:1 fast. *Theoretically*, that should keep me in a losing state. Experience tells me that even with eating once a day, what I eat is more telling than how much I eat. Tomorrow's weigh in will tell me.
I dunno..maybe it's the post-holiday letdown, maybe it's the fact that people are telling me how 'skinny' I've gotten, maybe I've been feeling deprived, maybe it's the loose wrinkled skin I'm seeing all over my body, maybe it's my hair falling out, or maybe it's a combination of all of the above. But I just don't have the motivation I once had.
I want to enjoy food again. I want to have sensory indulgence. I have very few sensual things in my life, and flavor and texture were the things that made me feel alive.
Yeah, wheat makes me sick and achy. I know that. And sugar was banned almost 30 years ago because of a genetic disposition to diabetes. I can live with that.
So, I'm going to change up the WOE for a while, maybe try the 52 Cowboy's strategy, and keep on keepin' on.
I'll keep you posted, and my plan is to stay somewhere in the neighborhood of where I am today, in the 160's. Gotta live LIFE, though!
I hope this didn't bring my buddies down, but it is what it is.

Your body uses carbohydrates as its main fuel source. Sugars and starches are broken down into simple sugars during digestion. They're then absorbed into your bloodstream, where they're known as blood sugar (blood glucose). From there, the glucose enters your body's cells with the help of insulin. Glucose is used by your body for energy, fueling all of your activities, whether it's going for a jog or simply breathing. Extra glucose is stored in your liver, muscles and other cells for later use or is converted to fat. Protecting against disease Some evidence suggests that whole grains and dietary fiber from whole foods help reduce your risk of cardiovascular diseases. Fiber may also protect against obesity and type 2 diabetes. Fiber is also essential for optimal digestive health. Controlling weight Evidence shows that eating plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains can help you control your weight. Their bulk and fiber content aids weight control by helping you feel full on fewer calories. Contrary to what low-carb diets claim, very few studies show that a diet rich in healthy carbohydrates leads to weight gain or obesity.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that carbohydrates make up 45 to 65 percent of your total daily calories. So, if you get 2,000 calories a day, between 900 and 1,300 calories should be from carbohydrates. That translates to between 225 and 325 grams of carbohydrates a day.

Keep spinning your wheels following that foolish advice, AH32.

Ms. Kes, White rice breaks down fast to glucose, lighting up those opioid receptors in your brain. Of course you want it! Eat it if you can handle it and you don't start gaining. You know how to get unhooked if need be. Maybe you're ready for a maintenance period. You'll know what you need; you've always been very good at listening to your body. Sending support, as always. @AH32, Ms. Kes is a champion low carber and rather a nutritional expert in Ketogenic ways of eating. Your explanation ignores a wealth of research and dieting successes that many of us here have accomplished.

Kes, I share your challenges and frustration. You've gotten closer to your goal than I have, though, so I can't maintain just yet. You do what you need to do, just keep us posted.

Thatbcarb train is over here, too! Got side swiped tonight. Will see what the damage is tomorrow for the weigh in and workout.

You're not bringing us down, Kes. You're saying how you feel and that's then where we come in with support. You know your body well and what works for you. Maybe you do need a maintenance period before getting back to it. Happiness is important as mental health is just as important as physical health. You just need to find that dietary balance. One thing that stood out to me though - your hair falling out? Now I know you know hair so is this unusual for you at this time of year? If so, I'd suggest you go for a check-up. Hair loss could be something or nothing, get it checked that it's nothing, eh? All the best!

I like the 5/2 way of eating....

If you're fasting so often, maybe your body is telling to eat sushi to make up some kind of mineral or vitamin deficiency, which is why your hair is falling out. Bodies are odd things. Amazing how they can communicate.

Take it easy, reward yourself!!! The important thing is that you are happy and proud of the results you achieved. The skin will eventually get better (moisturizer and lots of drinking water!!!) - get vitamins for your hair and give yourself time to consolidate your results you'll do great!

I agree with you Kes - food should be enjoyed. As long as you're eating mostly natural food, why worry? Maintenance is a good idea for a few months and then you can decide if you're happy with that or if you feel like losing again. You don't want your hair falling out!

Thanks for your support, my friends. It really means a lot. @Phooka, and @Snoop Puss, the hair loss is the result of telogen effluvium, brought on by a 91 hour fast I did a while back. It's growing back slowly, but is challenging to style in the meantime. @Erika, I know you're right about the rice, and past experience has told me that I can't handle it. The last 2 times I gave in to the sushi cravings, it resulted in gains over the next 3 days. *sigh* @AH32, the American dietary guidelines are what has made the US the most obese nation in the world, given rise to epidemic levels of childhood Type 2 diabetes, and a host of other metabolic diseases. They are the result of politics and shoddy research, and are currently being revised. I know I feel best when I'm in a ketogenic state.

I love California rolls and smoked eel sushi, so a couple pieces with large salad keeps my need in line with my diet.

Kes -- I've learned to satisfy the sushi craving by going with salmon and tuna sashimi, together with cucumber salad. As long as you don't drink down the salad dressing, which tends to be sweet, you have a pretty darn low-carb meal. I prerfectly understand your point. I eat low-glycemic and low-FODMAP, and the combination not only restrict my selection of foods, but also the textures. One thing that helps me is eating a lot of veggies raw and a lot of fruit cooked. I eat raw sweet peppers, tomatoes, and carrots, and I make my green beans crisp-tender, which gives my meals extra texture. By contrast, I make a lot of micro-waved fruit compote -- raspberries, blueberries, strawberries -- with lots of cinnamon and powdered ginger and a little bit of raw sugar (but I think you could use Stevia -- I'm allergic to it). I heat up my compote and plob a TBSP of unsweetened yogurt on top with some raw pumpkin seeds, and boy is it delicious. This may be way more flexibility than you have on your plan, but it works well on my low-glycemic path. Please don't get discouraged. You're doing great. Oh and by the way... some of our groceries make low-carb maki with lettuce wraps and cucumber with the fish, instead of rice...

I have used a recipe in the past for sushi made with cauliflower rice and mayo to hold it together. Not authentic, but adding my veggies, fish, and wrapping it in nori tasted good with my wasabi. Doesn't keep well. Needs to be eaten fresh. Found the recipe on the web a while ago.

Whatever works for you. My advice was strictly to hint you may not have to make yourself have all those horrible side effects and still get the results you desire. Calorie counting works for me as I can what I want. Choosing nutritious food over non nutritious is because I know it makes me full. The only spinning of wheels I have had is making a commitment for life for planned and prepared meals. We are obese because we consume too many calories which our body than stores as fat. To each his own. May you continue on the journey that feels best for your body and life style. This time is real for me because I'm no longer going to hold my self down and I hope to get everyone's support when I meet my goal and maintain it.

I only tried sushi once, never brave enough to try it again. It tasted like pond water smells....really green pond water! Couldn't swallow it, had to spit it out. GAG!

There's a store here that makes sushi that I love but don't eat very often as they use imitation crab...But it has the crab, cream cheese, guac, wasabi, and some other sauce they dribble on. I don't care for many of the others (agree with Rhontique). This is probably not "real" sushi, just some made up for us non sushi eaters, lol!
