I bet that is delicious! I wish I could have a taste! My daughter is often cooking beautiful meals with her bf from Burkina Faso. Maybe just a few flavors might be similar?! 😁 After a couple years now, our whole family gets excited when she is trying a new recipe! When visiting her cousin in Alberta, Canada, she found a Nigerian grocery store to get some spices she was needing. She got a couple beautiful blends she brought all the way home that I dip into for some of my cooking now. I have no clue what they are other than amazing! 😁

Lol @ Missy, I'm going to have to look up food from Burkina Faso and see what they eat. Don't they speak French? Or no? I know the franch africans next door to them in ivory coast have very different food, like couscous and squid lol. I'm curious what spices you got from the Nigerian store! I've never thought of using Nigerian spices in any american food except for meat. It's really nice your daughter cooks different kinds of foods! That's awesome!

Yep, French! But, he also speaks several other languages fluently including English. I think my girl just looks up west African dishes that look interesting to them and they give it a try. Together they make great food! He cooks fish, but she is not a fan of most seafood, so... Lots of chicken! She would know the names of the spices she picked out, but they are unlabeled in bags, so to me they are a mystery but smell mighty good! I have used them in soup and rice dishes... Hard to go wrong. 😁 There is a tiny, west African grocery store where she shops that is close by. Delightfully hot and spicy stuff she makes!

Larry—diet and nutrition are really interesting subjects. Sometimes eating things, like sweet potatoes, that are traditionally felt to be not diet foods, are actually good for you if eaten in a portion controlled manner and not every day (moderation). The nutritional benefits to your health need to be considered. Read and learn.

@ Larry Junior. One thing I've learned on FS is that many different approaches work. People's circumstances vary. Metabolic fitness varies. Exercise level varies. Age, metabolism, portion control, frequency of eating. You can never know what works for other people. So, I keep an open mind and learn from others, while honing what works best for me. This is a great place to pick up new ideas, while tweaking your own wins.

Beans. A traditional part of the Mediterranean diet for centuries. Full of protein and other things that are good for you. A staple in healthy vegetarian and vegan diets and healthy diets of poorer populations. If you are not overeating glycemic index is not important. Please read a bit more before commenting about what people should eat or not eat to lose weight. Your beliefs suggest your information source has been outdated for at least a decade.

That looks delicious! Thank you for sharing. And it's so nice to see good people not let anyone steal your joy. We each have our own path to travel and the only person we are in competition with is ourself.

1. The size portions I'm eating will not make me fat. 2. I cook all of my food at home which makes a huge difference when it comes to weight loss/maintenance. 3. These are my traditional foods and eating these keeps us slim. Overeating and Western diets is what actually is contributing to Nigerians becoming more overweight. 4. I've taken the time to learn that foods that make sense for one person, may not make sense for others. Like one person does well going vegan while another does well going keto. It's extremely ignorant to think we are one size fits all when it comes to diet. I am AFRICAN. Your food may not work for me and that is a-okay. My food may not work for you and you should be okay with that too. 👍🏽

Ada that meal looks delicious and I have been eating a very similiar "hotdish" combo of lean shredded pork, kale, diced russet potato with skin, onion, fresh pureed tomato, turmeric and other spices. I would eat that every day except for maybe the chicken skin. LOL. And yes..... potatoes are one of the most diet friendly foods. Loaded with nutrition, so versatile and will satiate your stomach to fullness. So no weekly limit on those for me. You have done so well so just keep doing what you do !

Thanks crboyer2! I just personally, would never tell an Italian to limit their pasta...or a Chinese person they shouldnt be eating rice. Makes no sense to me. Why tell an African they should slow down on African food 😂😂

So many wonderful and educational replies! AdaOke, your response is perfect! You are an amazing cook and are doing a beautiful, successful job making healthy choices for you and your family! Bravo! Larry, it would have been so great if you limited your comment to the opener "That looks delicious!"

You said it well AdaOke and your food looks delicious. There is no way to go wrong eating primarily whole foods like this especially the ones that you grew up with and that have stood the test of time.
