More informative than cautionary...

I was just at the gym and had a body scan performed.

Many of us use these scales at home (mine is a Renpho). They have the disclaimer on the app that, basically, these numbers aren't really accurate and are for entertainment purposes only.

I put my more reliable numbers (although still not deadly accurate) in red above what the scale's app told me to show how some are close while others are a bit off.

All this said, I've gained 6 lbs of solid muscle in the past couple months. The body fat has only gone up .2%, although I've lost and then gained some back.

Since this time last year, I'm only up 1% body fat and 12 lbs of muscle. Not too bad considering covid put me out for about 4 months. Better results this year though 💪

so you're endlessly staring at your butt in the mirror again, eh?

well, yeah, you wouldn't want it to deflate or anything like that.

err how does that work now? Wouldn't a regular tape measure be more accurate? For me personally it's better than apps or the scale. I like to know how I feel in my clothes than counting on that.

Katsolo you made me laugh so hard! Chris you remind me of Hebrews who is looking to put on weight, but in muscle only and you both are doing that.👍👏👏👏 Still if I had to put on weight I’d rather it be chocolate cake.😁

Thank you for sharing this. Very interesting showing the differences.

I always take anything the scale says other than the total weight lightly. I assume my BF % is 5-7% higher than it says.

Shoot, my fat free body weight would be 0lbs.

@morganstuart There are some scales that do some magic with bioelectronic impedence. I am 100% not a physicist so electrical currents are not my forte, but basically they emit a small current, and are able to differentiate between fat, muscle, and bone according to changes in how that current moves. I think. Probably somebody here understands it better than I do. But when you see those scales with the metal disks on them, that's usually what those are for - emitting and measuring those currents. The issue is consumer scales can't be too powerful (lest they, I dunno, screw with someone's pacemaker, for eg), and they usually complete enough testing for quality control, but not enough to ensure accurate results. So they're not useless, but they aren't usually very accurate. However, there are some very sophisticated, full-body scanners for specialty gyms/spas/practices that refine the technology and test it appropriately, which can give more accurate results. A tape measure will have difficulty telling you what percentage of the measured object is bone/muscle/subcutaneous fat/water density, although I have no doubt that there are formulae for estimating these things. =)

@she_loves Oh I don't know much about the different scales out there. I am sure there is a variety of scales, but I don't use them. I just got a regular digital scale and it weighs me 2lbs higher than the rec center scale. It's really hard for me to find a scale that has a maximum weight for what I weigh around here or online. That's one of the reasons why I use a measuring tape.

Good to see Renpho is on par. That’s the the scale I have too!

I'll go ahead and say two things here. First, some gyms don't even know that you can/should calibrate a scale, and second, if you just pick any single scale and use that scale consistently, unless you're trying to go from middleweight to featherweight for a boxing match, the initial number itself doesn't really matter. all that matters is what that number does over time, dependent upon your goals.

Too funny Chris! You should have a disclaimer for entertainment purpose as you are VERY entertaining!😁👍
