Fritzy 22's Journal, 26 April 2020

Just spent 10 minutes writing a journal entry - then it disappeared when I went to enter the pictures!

I've been self isolating for over 5 weeks now. As time goes by I get more and more worried about getting sick. At first it felt like it would be a couple weeks and then get back to normal. Now I can't imagine feeling comfortable about going to the gym or places like Costco or restaurants. I get worried enough going to the grocery store, which I've only done 3 times. I went Wednesday after more than 3 weeks. I bought some carrots, yellow onions and bananas just to have some produce in the house. The carrots and onions will last awhile. The best purchase at the grocery store I made was a 10 pound bag of russet potatoes 3 weeks ago. They last forever if I keep them in the refrigerator. I've been making a meal out of a baked potato and don't care if I add cheese and butter! Although I've also tried low fat ranch dressing and barbecue sauce and those are good too. I'm supposed to be eating low fat - but haven't had any gallbladder attacks or pain for a couple months now.

I'm not logging my food or weight. Don't really want to know about the weight and don't want to enter things like "minute rice and cream of mushroom soup". The things in my pantry are getting me through this. They last forever although I am using them up as time goes by - spam, tuna, corned beef hash, etc. Really wanted some canned peaches when I went to the store, but they didn't have any. But they had everything else I wanted/needed including a bottle of wine and a small bag of Fritos and a container of Breyer's ice cream. The Fritos and ice cream are gone now. I do well if I just eat what's in the house but can't resist the snacks when I have them.

I'm enjoying my deck now with the new wrought iron rails. Looks so much better than the rotting wood rails. I spend about an hour most evenings at dusk out on the lounge with Bobby in his dog bed next to me. Listen to the frogs and look at the sky. It's relaxing.

Your flowers are so beautiful! I've never had irises, but yours look lovely! I'm glad you have your deck and pup to enjoy! I'm so sorry this is so rough for you. Fear and stress have a terrible impact. It sounds like you are keeping home mostly. Even if your choices are limited, limiting amount sure helps. A treat of ice cream sounds good. It's not around anymore. The one good thing about not having frequent trips to the store... Without it in the house it is easy to resist. 😁 Hang in there, Fritzy! ❤️❤️❤️

Melissa - I am not overeating except when I have the bad stuff in the house. Yesterday I was craving biscuits or hot rolls. If there had been a box of Bisquick in the cupboard I would have made biscuits and probably eaten all of them. Otherwise, I look at what I have and think I don't want to open a can of kidney beans or cook up some lentils. I made chili the day I went shopping and used ground beef. It was good for 2 days of 2 meals a day. And yesterday I made homemade soup carrots, onion, potato and a chicken breast with a can of tomatoes and chicken bouillon cubes for the broth. Not overeating that. I just have to be careful when I do make it to the store not to buy too much. But having ice cream and Fritos won't really hurt if I do that once a month. I think. Haven't weighed myself. I do love the irises. I didn't plant them, the original owners of my house put all kinds of bulbs everywhere and after the drought we had for the first 4 years or so after I moved in I am happily surprised to see what grows after a nice rainy season. Those bulbs really multiply!

It is difficult times. It sounds like you are working it out. We are different from each other and will have our own personal strategies and it sounds like you have found yours. It sounds like opening is the new vogue so it will probably come where you are too. We just have to be careful. Garden is looking so great. Wish I could smell it.

This is not going to be over for a very long time, think in terms of a year and you will not be far off. We are going to deal with this not just this time but as the winter approaches, and beyond. Treatments are wonderful, but full control and safety will only come with a vaccine. At some point we have to come out of the closet, put our masks on and get on with some semblance of life. Person ally a GYM is so far off of anyplace I would go as is a mass sporting event, a movie theatre, or any large gathering of people that is conducted in doors. That’s just me, and restaurants are not on my agenda either. I would rather picnic outdoors where the heat and air can rapidly evaporate the moisture in the droplets so they don’t stay aloft for several hours.

Fritzy: I am 64, pre-type 2 diabetic. I got COVID-19 at the end of December. I had all the symptoms except upper respiratory. It was unpleasant for 4 - 5 days but it was no worse than the flu. Most of us will get it, and a big percentage will be asymptomatic. Very few will need hospitalization. Even fewer die, less than 1%.

Do you have proof it was covid or are you just assuming? I have a friend who is certain he had it two weeks prior to anyone really talking about it. All the symptoms except upper respiratory sounds like the flu. Without having been tested, seems like wishful thinking though I hope it's an accurate description.

Fritzy, I can't imagine you've gained much. Doesn't seem like you're eating very much.can you still go for walks or are you too scared? I miss you when you're not on here.

David’s Princess— oh no, she has tested positive several times. She is struggling to breath. She has been in 5 separate facilities in less than 3 weeks. All the way from Rancho Mirage (115 miles from me) to Loma Linda Hospital, 60 miles from and to three rehab hospital in between. Every facility is on quarantine so I have not physically seen her since March 26. Even a time when I wasn’t sure she would make it through the night I was not allowed into the hospital. This thing is deadly and not a way you want to go, not to discount the total isolation people are in. Wear you mask and for God sake WASH YOUR HANDS. That is the magic bullet.

Gz9gig— How did they test you back in December, or maybe it was you DP was asking how you KNEW you had COVID19.

Fritzy, just don't you worry about what a scale may or may not say. Like princess said, you probably arent gaining much if anything. We are just glad to hear from you. This has got to be lonely and isolating and scary not having any idea when the risk will really deminish. Kenna, how is your sister now? I've been thinking of you both so much. I have a sister in law who thinks she had it far earlier than it was noticed to be around. Seems very unlikely, but she hopes.

Fritzy- this is going to be around for a long time. Things are not going to go back to normal soon so it is best to prepare to be as cautious as you can during the foreseeable future. A few things I have done that helps is that I coordinate with a friend on biweekly trips to the grocery store. Following each other around in the store and just a few short words of comfort helps. I also plan to learn how to play tennis and have asked a friend to teach me as soon as things open up a little bit. That is an activity I can share with a friend, have some fun, learn something new, and still stay well in a safe distance of each other. When parks open up... some of us are planning weekly picnic gatherings. Again, on our own blankets, with our own lunch bags, but distancing. Think of what you can do and plan for the future. You are not alone !

Thanks Liv! It's not really a garden - did you notice the weeds next to the purple irises are about as high! But I do love how things just pop up every year. Kenna - I agree with you on all the places I we would NOT to go! Gz9gig said in her post that the virus wasn't anything worse that the flu - unpleasant for 4-5 days. But you said you knew she's had really bad problems? DP - I think I'm probably up at least 5-7 pounds and that is after gaining back everything I gained in January on the Daniel Fast (11 pounds). I was really, really bad at the very beginning of the isolation. I ordered candy on Amazon and ate it all within 2 weeks. A box of Heath candy bars, Paydays, and Kit Kats. Plus a big bag of peanut M&M's. Ate that instead of meals. I just cannot have that stuff in the house. I did end up give half of the candy bars to my sister and brother in law, but still had a lot. But it's been about 3 weeks since then, so hopefully it's not as bad as it could be. I can usually tell when I've gained too much because my clothes will get so tight. Although, with this lockdown - I've been living in sweat pants! Thanks for saying you miss me when I'm gone. Makes me feel good. I always feel like I whine too much. I haven't been walking and I should. I did a week or so ago with a mask for pollen. I am feeling very, very lazy right now. Thanks again Melissa. I will try to step on the scale again first thing in the morning to compare my weight to the last time I actually posted it here. Problem with me now is I am not sleeping well. The other night I woke up, wide awake at 2am. Got up and made a cup of hot chocolate and worked on my jigsaw puzzle. Maybe even had a piece of toast. So couldn't weigh myself that day. Thanks Crazycat - My sister lives in my neighborhood and her husband goes to the store often. I had him pick up some milk for me once so I can probably do that more often. I am not feeling that isolated except for the grocery shopping. I have friends I communicate with frequently and talk to my sister almost every day. A picnic or hike sounds like something I will try to do once that feels safe. I really, really miss going to the Mendocino coast. I usually go 5 or 6 times a year and had planned on a visit last month when the whales are migrating. Couldn't do that and have no idea when I can go again.

Thanks Misty! I love the irises, but don't know much about them, except the bulbs seem to split or multiply every year and there seem to be many more since I moved her in 2011. I keep trying to grow the orange California poppies. The lady across the street has hundreds of them in her front yard area. They grow next to highways in between rocks and yet I can't get them to grow anywhere in my yard. I try every year.

All the best Fritzy. Your property is beautiful. Enjoy. Quiet time is nice. ❤️

I did not have really bad problems, I recovered and I am doing fine. 5 days sick, 5 days weak / tired. It's truly sad that so many have died, but they are in the minority. We will likely all get exposed, most will get it and have a mild case or no symptoms at all. The mortality rate is under 1% unless you have comorbidities. Staying home may delay you getting it, but it's going to be in the population from now on.

Thanks Wifey - I do like my property but it's so big I can't keep up with it. Gz9gjg - Sorry I just confused when someone else said you've been in 5 different facilities and can't breathe, etc. Maybe she was talking about someone else. So glad you are recovered. I watch so much news, too much I think. And all they show are the people who die so I get really scared. My county is mostly rural and have only 38 confirmed cases posted and I don't know anyone who has gotten sick. But I also know it's really hard to get a test here.

In my state, you can't get a test to find out if you are infected, unless you have symptoms. Kenna, I assume you have heard of the test for COVID-19 antibodies? Here, they test you if you want to donate blood or plasma.
