Perfect planning on combining the exercise & shopping! It's funny to think about when the 'shopping CART' was invented - before that, people just used baskets. Now the carts are as big as a sports car and we are mentally 'urged' to fill them. Slippery slope.

I like your "rambling" post. Yeehaw on the gym. It's great that it is next door to your fave store. That will be incentive. I'm very flabby with the weight loss also. PF has some classes that will teach me form and what to do.
I don't really like mayo but SO does so it doesn't go to waste. I'm interested to see how the cashew spread tastes. And that mushroom chili sounds awesome.

Fritzy, since you're noticing weakness in your thigh muscles and you have access to a trainer, ask about working on your "sit muscles" which includes your glutes, quads and core. This set of muscles is so important as people age since it helps you get up, sit up and stay away from becoming bedridden later on. A little work now will help keep your independence and good for you taking the first steps. Proud of you!

Bella - I've always liked to "stock up". Learned that from my mom and I hate to run out of things. But now that I'm trying hard to eat mostly from the produce isle in the grocery store I have to really cut down on what I buy. That stuff doesn't last long! Thank Tatauu. I like mayo to make tuna sandwiches and potato salad. But don't make either very much. Not sure if the cashews will last until next week when I make a veggie sandwich. I've been munching on them, just had an ounce! Thanks Jimmiepop! Katsolo - my upper thigh muscles have been weak since 2008. I first noticed when I was fostering 13 puppies. I kept them in a room with a slab floor (waiting to replace the carpet) and after getting on the floor to scrub it many times a day I realized I couldn't get back up unless I held onto something. I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with Graves Disease and muscle weakness was one of the symptoms. Even with walking and hiking those muscles are still weak. I have no problem getting out of the car or bed. But sometimes it's tough getting out of the tub. I'll ask the trainer about the muscles to work on. Thanks for the information!

Tatauu - I have to work on the meatless chili. Just had a large serving. Not as good as my chili with ground beef. But very, very filling. I forgot to put onion in it and need to figure out some other vegetables that might add some flavor.

It's a tough change. My husband always bought dry goods / canned goods in '6' quantity; 6 cans of this, 6 boxes of that. It makes sense for a larger family but I've had to throw away too much food YEARS past the recommended expiration date.

Like you - I prefer fresh (or frozen) over canned or box .. it's there, on the shelves in the pantry for 'emergencies' (( like .. really.. in this day & time? )) and mostly get's touched to be dusted.

Bella - I go through the pantry once in awhile and it seems like what I throw away the most because it's way past the expiration date is bottles of salad dressing and open bags of pasta. The salad dressing was a great deal but I have to remember I never make salads at home! And I'll look at an open bag of sea shell shaped pasta that is almost full and remember I did make a tuna salad with the shells about 4 years ago! But I do like having some canned food in the cupboard for times when the power goes out or it rains for a week and I don't want to go out. I remember buying Spam at Costco - I think it was 6 or 8 cans. It lasts forever. I used most of it to put my dog's pill in a piece of it to get her to take it. Then I'd used the rest of the can to add to scrambled eggs or something.

Keep your nuts in the fridge or freezer to keep longer. Some produce do well if kept in plastic others if kept in water. It is a matter to try to figure out what is what. I seem to not get through my lettuce these days. Winters are not big salad months for me. Good news on the gym. Do they have classes? I like classes

Liv - I know potatoes and onions last awhile. Brussels sprouts seem to stay good in the refrigerator for at least a week. Apples and grapefruit too. But I know I have to use mushrooms right away and I have some asparagus I bought on Wednesday I am going to grill in the oven today. Never thought about putting nuts in the refrigerator, I've never had problems with the chopped nuts I buy. Lettuce goes to waste in my house! I might make one salad and then forget about the lettuce until I notice it in the fridge 3 weeks later. The gym does have classes. Zumba, yoga at least.

I keep my nuts in the freezer. I buy them from Costco. Fairly nice quality and a good price. Some lettuce like romaine does well if you keep in plastic maybe with some paper towels in with them to soak up moisture. You can also keep romaine in water. It may even grow in water. I keep celery in water (cut the rooms off and just sit in a class) in the fridge to preserve it . Carrots keep fairly long if in plastic in the fridge

My husband does the shopping and he is always Overkill on everything, not just food. We throw away so much food every week because it gets wilty and yucky looking. Congratulations on your big step of going to the gym. That's noteworthy! Once I get better, and I say this all the time... I will be going to the gym. I just opened up YouTube an hour ago to look at some chair exercises for seniors. I think I'll try some of those until I can go to the gym.
