Debbie Cousins's Journal, 10 August 2019

Well, SOMETHING’s going on! Things have been so different since I went to the psychiatrist the other day. I cut the Wellbutrin from 300mg to 150mg, and I will discontinue that on Monday. That’s also the day I will double the Abilify from 5mg to 10mg. SO, I can’t be experiencing any real changes from that yet. BUT, there have, indeed, been major changes!

I cut the Ambien from 10mg to 5mg after the appointment. Last night, I WAS able to go to sleep at 9pm, but “the baby” woke me up at 1 by thrashing around in the bed and continuing to wiggle out from under the covers. He didn’t wake up, but I did, and then I wasn’t able to go back to sleep. I actually GOT up at 2am and stayed up until 6am. Then I went back to bed for an hour until 7. Total sleep last night: 5 hours. (I usually sleep TEN hours a night.)

I accomplished everything on my To Do List yesterday, and by the time I had finished compiling today’s list, I had about 35 items on it. I must confess that, since it is generally SO hard for me to accomplish anything, I break down tasks into individual components so that I have more things to cross off. For instance, what most people would call “Do Laundry,” I would break down into 1-Sort Clothes; 2-Wash Whites; 3-Dry Whites; 4-Fold Whites; 5-Put Away Whites; 6-Wash Hang-Up Clothes; 7-Dry Hang-Ups; 8-Hang Up Hangups; 9-Put Hangups into closets. You get the idea. Can you say, “micro-manage?”

Today, though, after having completed all the above tasks, I consolidated them into just “Sort Laundry” (because that involved 3 loads) and “Do Whites,” and “Do Hang-up Clothes.” I decided to save the sheets for tomorrow. My original goal for the day was just to do ONE load of laundry, but I did two!

Doing the dishes started out as: 1-Unload Dishwasher; 2-Pre-wash Dishes; 3-Load/Run Dishwasher; 4-Hand-wash Copper Chef Pans. After having done all that, I consolidated it down to just “Do Dishes.” The REASON I made these consolidations was because I accomplished SOOO much! After doing major consolidations on everything, I still ended up doing TWENTY-THREE jobs today!

Now, here’s the problem. I don’t know what’s up with my lack of sleep. I went to bed at 6 tonight (because I was so tired after only getting so little last night), and I woke back up at 9 and couldn’t go back to sleep. Unfortunately, I got back up and my husband (who had been feeling terrible) wanted some pancakes, so I made some “for him,” but had two myself. I recorded everything, and went over on my RDI from my target of 1,800 to 2,020 Calories.

I had been thinking about making Pecan Cream Cheese Pancakes for two days and had it on my To Do List for tomorrow. They are a lower-carb Keto version, and I could have fit them into my RDI tomorrow. Alas!

SO, since I’m restricted to only having the ½ Ambien, I just took two Benedryl to try to get back to sleep. I think I’m having trouble sleeping because I’m so motivated to accomplish things!

Is it possible that this newfound energy is a result of the new “miracle drug” I started yesterday? Is it just a coincidentally-timed answer to prayer? I LOVE the energy and accomplishment; but I would also like some SLEEP! Maybe I can’t have my cake and eat it, too. Maybe a lot of the reason I was sleeping so much was because I was just so very BORED from sitting in my chair doing nothing all day every day.

Oh, the “reason” (besides the pancakes) I ate so much today was because I was UP all those extra hours. Thanks for biding the time with me. Hope everyone has a God-blessed day tomorrow.

Your lists remind me of lists I have done in the past. It's very easy for me to not do anything at all. I used to make lists of things I needed to do during the week. If I put "clean the house" on the list I would look at it and just not do it. It was too much. So I made a list of things to do throughout the week and I'd check them off when I did them. Instead of "clean master bathroom", I would have "clean master bath mirror", "scrub bathtub", "clean bathroom sinks". There would be 7 or 8 things to accomplish just to clean the master bath, but one at a time they were not overwhelming. It takes about a minute to clean the mirror. By the end of the week the house would be clean. When I was working I committed to 30 minutes a day of housework. I would set a kitchen timer for 15 minutes in the morning and get some things done. I remember it took about 4 days at 30 minutes a day to totally clean the kitchen - but everything was done including every shelf in the refrigerator. After about 2 weeks I was looking for things to do before going to work and was on a ladder cleaning the ceiling fans or rearranging the pots and pans under the stove. Could the sleep problems be because of changes in medication? I know stopping some medications can cause insomnia.

Glad you're feeling better, hope you get your sleep sorted out. I rarely sleep more than 5 or 6 hours per night, been like that for many years.

I eventually got off of all of my meds. started with depression, ended up needing trazadone for insomnia from wellbutrin which gave me migrane attacks. Everyone I know who was on Wellbutrin got migrane attacks. So the trazadone didnt work amd they put me on Seroquil. I ended up bipolar and started hallucinating when they upped my dose to 400 mg Seroquil. couldnt sleep anymore so they put me on Ambien. they went to switch me to abilifym by this pount I was diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic weighing 230 lbs. I weened off all my meds and dealt with the chamges naturally. I quit smoking ciggarettes and I feel 26 again. No medicine, No drugs. I hope you find your way too. By the way. quiting medicine the weightfell off in 5 months with a healthier eating lifestyle, no soda no fast food. No psychological issues, no insomnia, though it took a month for my sleep cycle to return to normal. Good day!

Debbie, please throw out the Benadryl - it has been linked to early onset dementia. 3 mg Melatonin is much safer and just as effective.

I love your list making, very similar to my wife and I when we actually manage to make lists.

The psychiatrist wanted to put me on Rozerem for sleep (eliminating the Ambien), but the co-pay after insurance is over $400! I applied to the Patient Assistance Foundation, but was declined because my prescription costs for the past year weren't equal to 5% of my household income. This week, I'm getting a printout of mine and my husband's expenses to see if actually PAYING for the Rx once would put us over the minimum we need to have spent. If so, it might be worth it to be able to get the medication FREE for a year. Same exact situation with the Rexulti. My husband has a doctor's appointment on Thursday, at which time he will get all of his Rx's refilled. That's when I'm waiting til to get our yearly total. I can't take melatonin, @gz9gjg, because the ONE time I took it I had such bad nightmares every time I closed my eyes that I was truly afraid I wouldn't live through that night! Thanks, everyone, for your kind responses!

It’s good to work with your prescriber to figure out what works for you (as opposed to taking well meaning advice from people online). Glad you’re feeling better!

Keto helped me off of 15 pills … cardiac, BP, Allergy, decongestants water pills... I take one Allegra a day and on rough days I have sinus things... but that is all. The extra energy may in fact come from the keto. When I am behaving I can run in huge circles... just kidding ...If I am running you better follow me cuz somethings up. But I do get tons more energy.
