peeperjj's Journal, 17 March 2020

My city is closing everything. Gym announced yesterday that they’d be open for the main stuff but closing kids activities, child watch etc. Less than 24 hours they decide to close up and didn’t find out until too late to go. Restaurants and fast food are TOGO and drive thru mostly. Schools are out until April 6th. All of our practices, competitions, lessons etc have been cancelled.

I’m stuck in the country with a whiny teenager who is bored to death already. She just can’t understand that nothing is open. She doesn’t understand why her friends families are traveling all over and we won’t travel. If there was something local we might consider it but I’m not crossing state lines right now.

I have two other kids going stir crazy. And it’s been raining and muddy. Can’t send them out for long because it’s chilly too. I may go crazy with all the whining lol. We have tons of games, toy boxes full of toys, everyone has a device, 2 TVs, lots of movies, etc and they still can’t find stuff to do.

My teenager wouldn’t quit following me around so I jokingly asked hubby if he wanted to ‘you know’ and she ran off gagging lol. I’ll have to use that one again. I may have to borrow hubby’s hunting ear protection so I can’t hear the whining and fighting!

That’s us in Memphis. Rainy so it’s not practical to take my littles outside (those still at home are 4, 3, 1 yrs old). Luckily ABC Mouse and Pink Palace Museum and Memphis Zoo are allowing online things. Also everything here is on a TOGO.

Loved the "you know". Still keeping the sense of humor.

❤❤ I feel for you. I'm so glad to be here alone. I don't think anyone would want to hear me whine about my isolation and I KNOW I don't want to hear it from others.

Sometimes when i want to be alone i tell my rm i want to you know, party of one. True or not, he gets lost in a hurry. So it works on some adults too.

My oldest is a complainer. Sometimes she just won’t let it go and follows me everywhere whining or complaining. So I have to come up with ideas to get her to drop it or leave me alone lol. My middle saw the oldest following me everywhere so she’s started it to be a little turd. I’ve had to start locking the bathroom door because they’ll come right in with me and stand directly in front of me and keep at it :/. We should all have a sense of humor in this mess or we will go crazy I think. Thankfully the sun is out today. Still muddy but the kids can go play for a bit at least.

When I was young I learned not to tell my mom I was bored. She'd have me ironing sheets or scrubbing floors, washing windows. My dad would have me pulling weeds. I would have been happy with a jigsaw puzzle or TV - we didn't have movies or DVDs to watch back in the 60's!

Lol Jen. Fritzy, my mom was the same except it was usually mowing the yard, doing dishes or washing laundry. I learned quickly to just go ride my horse, work with my animals or play a video game. I’m an only child so I couldn’t go play tag or play a board game with anyone. Bella, I don’t really want to be around myself much right now lol. I see boredom/emotional eating in my future. Thankfully I know the snacks have to last for the kiddos so I think I can hold out a week or two.

I'm with you Peeperjj. "You have nothing to do? Here's the windex, furniture polish, & vacuum. I want all of the furniture moved vacuumed under and put back, same with books and knickknacks moved, polished under, put back. When you're done with this room, let me know!" That was how it was done around my house.

When they follow you, grab their hands and start dancing with them like a maniac. Parents dancing together will also likely have a similar effect, especially if you both start singing. Highly likely they'll run off and tell their friends how they can't believe how weird you are. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I hear ya! I have a three-year-old and a four-year-old they have been out of school for 2 weeks already. and as this being their first year of preschool I have to listen to crying for about an hour every morning because they don't understand why they don't get to go 2 school. I also deal with a lot of whining but as them being very young they are easily distracted I can't imagine being stuck in the house with teenagers!

Thanks for the ideas ladies! Jess, I feel for you. Littles just don’t understand. My youngest is 5 1/2 so she understands somewhat. I printed off some worksheets for her to do so she can play school. I’ll be the teacher and grade them when she’s done.
