Fritzy 22's Journal, 10 February 2020

Had my "orientation" at the gym this morning. It's not as big as it looks (mirrors). The average age of the people working out seemed to be 70. I was one of the younger people there. The people who work there are in their 20's, maybe 30's. Their job is probably to make sure the rest of us don't hurt ourselves.
Tried out a few of the weight machines and need to set up an appointment with a trainer who I suppose will help me figure out which machines will benefit me the most. Maybe it's not so good that the grocery store is right next door. After the gym I went grocery shopping and bought mandarin chicken from the Chinese food area. Also bought 2 bags of potatoes for $5. It was a good deal and it's $5 Monday. I don't need 1 bag of potatoes, let alone 2. But I feel good about another "deal" I was able to resist. I love the bakery department and they make these delicious berry strudels. Usually they are $4.99 for a container of 4. Today you could get 2 containers for $5. I almost did it, but thought they were the last thing I needed in my freezer and probably wouldn't last long.
One thing I'm not going to do is invest in "gym" or workout clothes. I did buy a pair of slightly baggy lightweight pants at Costco that seem to work for the gym. And long t-shirts complete the outfit.

Too much about the food ... too little about the gym.... LOL. Have you committed to the gym. Can you have a trial period? Be a bit careful when you meet with someone as they often try to talk you into extras that may not be what you need right now. I think older people often are around for social reasons as well as workouts of course. Not a bad thing really.

You'll get it all sorted out, and if the grocery store being close is a temptation remember this. You can't out-train a bad diet. Best to you--expect to get sore, but it's a good sore.

Liv - the gym is month to month and there is no penalty to cancel. There was a one time "fee" (can't seem to avoid those) of $30. Other than that I get 2 free sessions with a trainer. I just need someone to help me figure out which machines to use. Lots of the ladies were excited about the Zumba classes. I really signed up for the weight machines after my doctor suggested it to help with my weak leg muscles. Also hope to help with my upper arms. Adameve - I was a little bit sore yesterday, but not much. But I didn't do all that much. I'm hoping to just use the grocery store to be able to get fresh vegetables and fruits more often. But sometimes I can't resist the Monday specials. Note to self to avoid going to the grocery store on Mondays and to figure out what to do with all those potatoes!

A suggestion on the grocery store. I used to do this when I went to Whole Foods which was a treat. Take $10 in cash. Nothing else. You can take less if that helps, but the point is to limit the damage and cause you to think about your choices before you leave the store.

Good idea Katsolo! Thanks!

I might consider a gym where I'd be considered 'the young one' too ~ but I bet they're in better shape than me.

Make a list for Mondays! That way you will have a plan for when you break down and go to the grocery store. One of the body builders posted a long message that came down to one thing that I am keeping in mind: smaller weights and higher reps are what help you build muscle so start small!

Also - ditto liking Kat's idea ~ definitely a good way to budget & think about choices.

Bella - everyone at the gym was in better shape than me. The men seemed really focused on doing their workouts and some of the women were too. But lots of the women seemed to be socializing. Might be a good place for me to make some new friends. Abba - I do better with lists. I think I will avoid Mondays, they are too tempting with their $5 deals. A few weeks ago I ended up giving my sister a couple of my great "deals".

No reason to compare yourself to others at the gym. Everyone is on their own private journey.

I pretty much always shop with a list. I'm not a extreme coupon type (don't really even use them), but I have a list on my phone for the three stores I shop regularly. I try and stick to it, it helps. I have "regular" items and I add the one-offs before I go in. I stay out of the middle aisles and I don't stick around and "shop". That costs me money.

If I bought 2 bags of potatoes I'd be wasting my $5 cause even 2 of us don't go thru potatoes fast enough that they wouldn't spoil these days. Now if the special was fruit or veggies of some kind we could eat all that 😊

thanks liv - not really comparing myself to others at the gym. Just looking and observing. I think I'll feel pretty comfortable there. Katsolo - I do much better with a shopping list and to NOT shop when hungry. SherryeB - the potatoes are only in 5 pound bags. I gave one bag to my sister, along with a chuck roast in my freezer. I can use up 5 pounds, I'll make stew or soup a couple times and I had a baked potato for dinner (without butter)

I'm so glad you got started at the gym! I still don't love it, but it has become much more part of my routine and I don't dread it or feel lost to know what to do anymore. I don't think you will EVER regret investing in your fitness either financially or taking the time. And, girl, it is OK to get some clothes you enjoy wearing just to work out! I got a few comfy things at the thrift store and most often they are the things I put on first thing in the morning so I don't have to change to go to the gym... And they are my reminder to get going!
