Treadmill
make sure you stretch before, after... and sometimes during your jog :s at least for a while. if you must run. I used to be a runner (I'm trying to get back into it now) and I would get crazy "shin splints" - it sounds a bit like the pain your describing, and it doesn't go away anytime soon. It normally occurs in new runners. I agree with the above poster: The elliptical is a non-impact cardio way to lose weight (meaning, you don't stomp your feet like you would while running), so try that. Good luck!
