mrsmole's Journal, 09 October 2014

I wish I could fully explain the true magic of eating a high fat ketogenic diet and how it turns off my appetite like a switch. I'm satisfied for hours. My energy level is steady like a rock. The other day I ate at 11AM and didn't even thing about food again until 7:30PM, and that only because I was feeding Mark. I've never experienced anything like it. My doctor approves, and my numbers are good. My blood sugar remains stubbornly high, but that will come with time, patience and medication tweaks.

It took about a month to fully kick in for me, and that was after about 10 days of carb flu. But I believe my IR had a lot to do with that. If someone were to back off carbs gradually and give up refined sugar completely, it would probably happen for them in a matter of days, not weeks once they fully committed to a ketogenic food plan. I really think I can sustain this after I lose my weight. I will have to find my carb tolerance and see what I have daily, but it seems to be very low, about 25g/day, at least for ketosis. For weight loss, that could be another story. Not willing to experiment there. I'm only willing to do this until I get to within 10 pounds of my goal, then I can mess around and see where I am at that time.

Now that I have this, I wouldn't give it up for love, money, ice cream, cookies or bread. Ever. So not worth it. I feel great and I've never had my appetite so under control before. I've never left food on my plate before. Ever. Ever!! I now give it to the dog so it doesn't go to waste. LOL!!

I am feeling the same way myself! I don't need self control anymore, I am simply not hungry, not craving anything sweet. Makes it so easy to bypass the dessert cart and the bread basket, without even a longing glance!!! I feel like I have the secret to saving the world!

It's great that you've found a way of eating and losing weight that works for you and that you can continue to do as a new way of life. That is key, a diet is temporary and the results don't normally last. And yes, the benefits / feeling of being lighter, healthier, and in control are great. You're doing wonderful, keep it up!

I know I could look this up on the internet, but I would rather get an answer from experience. What is ketogenic food? What kinds of foods do you eat and how does it work if you don't mind my asking?

Congrats on your program. @Elitecobra, Ketogenic refers to Ketosis. On an Ultra Low-Carb diet (less then 30gms net of carbs), and a diet high in fat, you force your body to use stored fats for energy. Low Carb "flu" is what you experience for a short period while your body converts from burning predominantly incoming carbohydrates for energy, to burning fat for energy. @Mrsmole has a much longer period of satiety between meels, as Fat has more energy and sustains longer than protein or carbs, without the huge highs and lows of carbs.

So glad Mrsmole that you have a plan that works for you. Draglist, my crazy dogs beg for veggies and fruit!! I have to be careful if I drop a grape to scoop it up since they are not good for them. Jazzy steals tomatoes, rasberries, and peppers off the plants in the garden! She is pertty good at not damaging the plants.

Wholefoodnut - our older dog loves to steal sugar snap peas and green beans from the vines, used to have to battle with her for the peas when access to the garden wasn't restricted. She also loves carrots.

It just goes to show that it wasn't us being greedy, it was a chemical reaction in our body to carbs. Glad you are now liberated! Don't get hung up if the scales go the wrong way, just take a note of the grams of protein. I'm watching myself very closely, and I'm not sure if it's a coincidence yet, but over the last 10 days I've had a day where I've put on weight and one day where I've stayed the same. On both times, the previous day's protein count was over 70g. So I'm now thinking I should keep Lower than 70g. You really are doing well, I can feel your enthusiasm it's inspiring :-)

Can't wait for that "not even hungry" stage to kick in!

jeread, when you hit sub 20 carbs/day (gross, not net) and up the fat grams like crazy, you will feel it right away! Lose the chocolate and sugary coffee and you will feel it so fast, it'll make your head spin! If you get a sugar craving, have some sharp cheddar cheese - your body wants fat, not sugar. Try this and trust me. I am someone who obsessed on food for my entire life and this is freeing unlike anything I've ever felt.

mahjohn, thank you for explaining! That was very succint. I highly recommend the book Keto Clarity by Jimmy Moore for those who are truly interested. Weight loss is NOT the main goal, FYI. It's the other health benefits, like low blood pressure and better cholesterol numbers, plus sustained, unlimited energy that attract most people to this lifestyle.

Draglist, I feel for your pup! My dogs are so spoiled now, I have to hand feed them half the time. They are never sure if it's okay to eat off the dishes on the floor, as some belong to the cats! Mommy likes to spoil them, so it's okay. I'm a goof when it comes to my fur babies, so it's okay to mock me!

Tis ok, we all spoil our pups and other furry and feathery (I have a small parrot) friends/ families. To me they are family, and believe they are all spoiled. Have my pup snuggled as I'm typing, old man pup won't come in out if the rain, he likes gentle rain. My parent's had a carin who was allergic to meat, so vegetarian diet for her. She and my dog would fight over broccoli anytime and apple cores my daughter would eating. They would sit and watch her eat an apple then she would hold the remnants out for them. They were nuts!! mine outweighed her 4x but she usually won, it would be sooo funny. They were very careful of my tiny daughter. This was in the early 70's, so a long time ago.

Mrsmole, totally agree, though a different WOE plan. Health is the goal. Health in multiple ways; physically, mentally, and spiritually. Be fit, healthy, live a good, active, productive life.

It often seems that people's pets mirror their owners health. Maybe it is because they get leftovers of the kind of food in the house. Low carb leftovers...what could be better? I have a competition dog that I fed green tripe to for many years. He has never been ill for one day. Now he is 13 retired and still acts like a puppy. I believe that I saved in vet bills what I spent on food.
