Sandy701's Journal, 23 May 2011

DH took doggies out for a walk early this AM, so I was able to go walking by myself on the lake route, which is a very nice change of pace for me. Doing the same neighborhood route 5-6x/week gets boring in a big hurry and I've been doing this for nearly a year now.

I weighed in today, even though I'm the same. I do that because I feel that it's important for me to keep a regular record of where I am and how things are going on this WOE. I've written before how I weigh in once a week no matter what, but will take any decrease in weight at any time. If the decrease is still there on weigh-in, it gets recorded; if not, I'll record the gain! The way I look at it, the decreases are motivating, so I'll post those whenever they happen. And even though it's NOT always motivating, I'll record whatever weight I am on a regular, weekly basis - no matter what the number is.

Weigh-ins are highly personal and we each have the ability to choose whatever suits us best. There is no right or wrong way to be successful in this regard. For myself, however, if I choose to only record losses, and never the gains, my graph may look pretty, but I'll never get the true picture of how my weight loss is progressing.

Suppose I gain 10 pounds but choose not to record it, deciding to wait until I've lost this "temporary" gain. Weeks or months from now, I'll forget exactly how much I gained, or how long my weight was up, or how my body loses back to wherever I was (did I lose most of it right away, did I lose it little by little, etc.). I won't even be able to review what measures made my weight go back down even a pound.

Let's take another example. Say a person only records losses and never the gains. Sally Dieter gains 5 pounds for whatever reason and chooses not to record her weight until she's back to where she was. Maybe not a big deal this time. She loses back to where she was and continues on downward. Graph looks nice and has a good downward slope.

Now suppose Sally has this happen with increasing frequency! Her graph still looks nice because she's recording no gains, BUT...wouldn't she learn something by seeing that there are some gaining spikes in her graph and that they're happening more and more frequently? Wouldn't it be valuable to know how her body loses after a small, or larger, gain?

In short, if I only record losses and not gains, I'll lose valuable information on how my body reacts to the food choices I make.

Well that makes a lot of sense. I like the graphs as it does show me what the heck is going on. Maybe I ate too much salty foods and maybe I worked it off by getting off my butt. You crazy.. but I like that about you...Have a wonderful day my friend..........Bren

I love the graphs too, Bren. I'm just saying that it's difficult to face a gain on the graph but if a gain is not recorded, one could miss valuable info. To each, his/her own. You have a good day too and get this week off to a fantastic start!

I am working on it big time girl.. Oh yeah it hurts to see that graph start upward especially if you stayed on course all week and then it shows up a gain.. That sucks...Take care my friend.....Bren

My view is; It is what it is! I post what ever the scale says, period!

Sandy - we appreciate you being honest with your weigh ins. I weigh myself every day, but only record it on Sunday. Many times I've lost 1-2 lbs. during the week but always gain it back by Sunday, so my graph becomes a perfectly straight line. One of these days I'm going to heave that scale out the window.

Good points! I might start recording my weight a bit more regularly again.

I get so up and down about the stupid scale so I'm trying to only do a Sunday weigh-in and record it. However sometimes I look late-week to see how sunday may be looking lol. I hate the scale.

Your post caught my eye, I agree with you about weighing in. I try not to get on the scale more than a couple of times a week. I used to record my weight every time, but have decided to record only Friday's weigh in~loss or gain. I admire you so much because you have kept with the diet for so long. Slow and steady~ I need to remember that! At 55 almost 56, the weight does not fall off very quickly. You are an inspiration to me Sandy.

GG-Girl, yup, it is what it is. And, obviously, it's working for you. You're doing great!

Oh Buffy, some days I feel like my scale could join yours in going out the window, esp. when it's doing its "forced accuracy" thing. One of these Sundays, you're going to see that weight loss stick and you'll give that ol' scale a great big hug!

Squiggs, you're in a separate situation, all your own!! After all you've been through, there are no hard and fast rules...just do your best. Still keeping warm with Zumba?

Annawithouttheblonde, it really is a love/hate relationship with the scale. I try not to let it run my life, but it does....at least for now. I have hope that eventually I'll be weaning myself off of it except for maybe weekly....well, maybe still daily, weigh-ins just to be sure I'm within a 5- to 8-pound range. Your Sunday-only weigh-in should work well, as it should give you a basic trend not overly influenced by your daily variation. Good luck!

Lenasmom, we're just about the same age, so I know exactly what you mean about the pace of weight loss. And, I've stayed with this so long because Atkins truly is a good fit for me AND because once I'm in a routine (rut), that's where I like to stay! I think a good number of the longer-term people on this site that are making Atkins work for themselves are women 45, 50, or older! We have the stamina to get the job done! Not to say we don't have a few stumbling blocks from time to time, but we persevere!!!

Im always honest with the scale. I think you would only be hurting yourself otherwise. But the funny thing is a once a week weigh in doesnt always show what happens when you weigh everyday and record once a week. Like this week I started with a 3 lb gain but by the time I recorded was at a 2 lb loss. So while I record every week I use it as a guideline that Im generally going in the right direction because otherwise I would throw it out the window!

Quite true, Maw1966. There are defintely days where the scale would be a better lawn ornament!
