maeday42's Journal, 05 January 2017

When I signed up for this site, it told me I should eat 1900 calories a day to loose weight - that's is impossible. I cannot eat that much! I've even tried planning out a full days worth of food - no way. I don't know if its wrong or if I got it confused somehow, but that's not gonna work for me.

I know how you feel...I can't eat that much either. My doctor wanted me to eat 2300 calories a day so that I could lose slowly and retain muscle mass. I promised her 1500 a day, but am usually at 1200 or below :)

Because a calorie is NOT a calorie. Each of us is individual and has different factors that make us hold on to weight. Most doctors in the US have zero hours in school on nutrition. Check out some books like Fat Chance and Always Hungry for some great info about how to lose the weight without all that calorie noise and nonsense. I lost 20 lbs in 8 weeks-no calorie counting. I hope you can get it figured out.

I went on the Atkins diet and counted carbs AND kept my calories between 1200 and 1500. It too me 8 months to loose 50 pounds, and for the most part, I wasn't hungry.

1900 calories is 100% doable but honestly you should go talk to a nutritionist and get your RMR (Resting metabolic rate) checked to actually see what you need to do to actually lose weight. If you make good choices ie Premier protein shakes, lean meats, veggies, yogurt, fruit it absolutely can be done. Just remember it is hard and takes a lifestyle change but I promise with dedication you can and will do it.

I'm a 220 pound man that lifts weights and bike rides and 1800 was my target. I've been hitting 1500 typically.

I found that the site is not accurate for guessing how much we should eat. I kept track of what I was eating and then deducted 500 from the average to set my goal at 1300. I actually started making real progress when I stuck to 1250 and got in 10,000 steps a day. I am 5 foot 3. Good luck!

Same. Fat Secret gave me a target of twice the food everything else I had read suggested I needed if I wanted to lose weight in any serious manner. So I have recalculated my goals accordingly.

You can change that number.

Mine told me 1900 as well. I've dropped mine to 1700 to start, as that is 500 less than I supposedly burn in a day. I'll just have to tweak it as I go I think.

I think it suggests way too much. mine says 2200 calories per day and I don't see much chance of losing weight on that many. I average around 1600. I think your average sedentary lady can easily drop to 1300-1400 range with no ill effects

I agree 1900 is too high unless you are an athlete 😊 I eat 1400 and that's about right for me. It also depends greatly on what k8nd of food you eat.

Whew! Thanks for agreeing with me, sometimes I wonder if it's me and something I'm doing. I don't think I really eat badly, I think for me it's the exercise. I know they say, "you've got to take time for yourself", but for me it's hard to find that. However, I am going to make a concerned effort this year! Thanks you, I am really getting a lot from this site.
