Hermiones Mom's Journal, 11 October 2016

Update: Xrays showed I managed to avoid breaking any bones or disrupting the erector set that holds my arm together. So that's a big hurtle crossed and good news. The surgeon's conclusion, as I suspected, is that I likely have a rotator cuff injury. To be honest, I'm suspicious I've had a rotator cuff injury since the original accident 10 years ago, but everyone was focused on putting my arm back together and avoiding infection, so I never had an MRI back then. I will likely have an MRI the end of this week or the beginning of next week, and then we will know for sure the nature of the injury and whether or not I need a surgical repair. But the surgeon says I can't drive, which is a huge problem for me, and I am trying to cope with that reality at the moment. On the way home, we stopped at the Whole Foods where I can get a gluten free, lactose free candy bar and a nice cup of coffee. I squandered 210 calories but I don't care. I felt much better, and my day will still be under control. Starting tomorrow, I need to a) walk a lot more and b) cut my calories back because I obviously won't be ice skating or working with weights for quite a while. I'm really disappointed because since I started skating 3-4 days per week, I can feel my whole body changing shape in a good way, and now that progress will stall... Hopefully, once I get to the physical therapy part of the process, I'll start burning calories and building muscle again. Thanks everyone on FS for being so supportive. I could now use people writing in with positive stories about rotator cuff repair because I've heard some negative ones...

If you can stick with the same surgeon, you will be fine. It sounds like he is extremely gifted.

Thanks for all the support. LadyinDenim -- there's pro's and con's to staying with this surgeon. I'm a bit concerned that he will view a rotator cuff repaid as boring and beneath him and the resident/fellow will actually do the surgery, not the senior guy. I'm going to wait until I have a confirmed diagnosis and then I will have a heart-to-heart with my rheumatologist, who referred me to this surgeon 10 years ago and knows him very well. I want to ask: Should I get a second opinion from someone who specializes in run-of-the-mill ortho surgery, rather than Dr. J., who specializes in ortho trauma surgery. We'll see. I just want to keep moving forward so that my whole life isn't stalled by this.

THAT is great news in the big picture! You will make a good decision when the time comes to make one.

Very good news to know that the previous surgery wasn't damaged. How was the surgeon's demeanor? How long is the no driving order? How did you reinjure your arm? It sounds like you know what you have to do about your WOE until recovered. Sending hugs. 😠💞

So sorry you are injured and laid up!

Sarah -- to review my ridiculous situation: I have just started to learn backwards one-foot glides in my ice skating class, and I was practicing them last Wednesday, and I lost my balance (and apparently my sanity for a moment) and when I fell, I forgot to throw myself violently onto my left side so as to avoid crushing my right arm, which was very badly injured 10 years ago when I fell down a flight of iron stairs. (P.S. Those stairs were subsequently completely rebuilt!). I actually think that I have had a rotator cuff problem every since that original accident, and perhaps I just traumatized it now. My sister says there is a portrait aging in an attic somewhere -- the surgeon is better looking now than 10 years ago, but he's still, well, I'm not going to say it. This election season has made me very conscious of not throwing around language that is disrespectful. Let's just say: This is like being cared for by a Venezuelan version of Dr. House. He's a genius, but you have to have a very thick skin.

My 70yo neighbor got both repaired (one at a time) over a six month period. He seemed very happy with both fixes. He did water exercises religously and said that rehab and movement therapy were the most important pieces. So while there are painful moments, it seems to pay off in the long run.

Good news and prayers for good test results on the MRI. Mainly best wishes for healing so you can continue your activities.

My prayers are with you Hermiones that you won't need surgery. I can't imagine not being able to drive! That would be tough. You will find a way to exercise to continue on the journey you are on. By the way, you deserved the 210 calories, not squandered in my opinion at all. Sometimes we need something to make us feel better (a little self pity for just a minute :) ). Then we get back on track. I will continue watching to see how things are going for you!

Glad to hear that at least part of the doctor's diagnosis went well. Prayers for discernment and wisdom on the best path for you.

Thanks so much everyone for the amazing show of support. bdmgoggins -- I hope my experience will mirror your neighbor's. I have a good friend having it done in about 2 weeks, and I have known others as well... Still it's all a bit scary, which is why I really needed that candy yesterday! Thanks cheleletourneau for letting me off the hook for that little detour. I'm actually proud of the fact that I chose very carefully to try to satisfy my craving without eating the wheat or dairy or other bad stuff that would have made me pay for my snack for several days, and also that I ate that candy bar and STOPPED eating before things really got out of hand. Honestly, there is a benefit to IBS if you tend to be overweight: When you know certain things will make you really really sick, sometimes for days, you are less inclined to binge.
