Hermiones Mom's Journal, 07 October 2016

OK - I made an appointment with the surgeon who did the original repair on my arm 10 years ago. He's a genius, but his bedside manner is horrible. I'm hoping the 10 years that have gone by since he did my surgery have mellowed him a bit. Back then he reduced me to tears several times. He is Hispanic, so I started taking my Peruvian foster sister with me to the appointments, and she finally let him have it in Spanish about being disrespectful to me and to my mother, and he took it down a notch. I know he's going to be seriously ticked off that I've ruined his good work, so I am taking Charo with me to the appointment so that I have a line of defense. I am in no mood to be lectured.

Meanwhile, I want to share a recipe with all my FS friends -- and I'm going to do it here because I don't take photos of my food, which may be the reason none of my recipes have ever been approved and shared, although, if I do say so myself -- I really am a pretty good cook. So here's a recipe for those days when you are dying for something sweet and yummy, but you don't want to totally blow off your diet. Now if you're doing LCHF, I'm not sure you can make this work for you-- maybe if you can sub stevia for the sugar. But if you are counting calories or doing moderate carbs/low glycemic like me, this is a delicious treat.

Not Quite Pie a la Mode
1/2 pound strawberries, quartered
1/2 pound blueberries
10 oz bag frozen peaches
1 container low-fat blueberry yogurt (I use lactose free)
raw pumpkin seeds (1/4 ounce per serving)
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp ground ginger
2 tsp turbinado sugar

Note: I used strawberries and blueberries that I had frozen myself over the summer. The peaches are Whole Foods 365 brand. Thaw all the fruit in the micro according to weight. Better to under-thaw than overcook. Of course, you can use fresh fruit if you have it.

Mix fruit in a 9 x 12 baking dish. Sprinkle with sugar, cinnamon, and ginger and mix well. Cover dish loosely with wax paper and cook in micro on high for 4 minutes. Mix well. Test the softness of fruit -- if necessary cook another 1-1.5 minutes. Mix well again.

Serve warm. To serve, put 1 cup of fruit in soup bowl. Top with 1/3 container of yogurt. Sprinkle with 1/4 ounce of raw pumpkin seeds.

Trust me -- this is delicious, and totally satisfies cravings for warm pie with ice cream.

Believe me -- I have appreciated Dr J's work every single day of the past 10 years. The first surgeon consulted looked at the xrays and suggested "It will either heal or it won't." Had it not been for Dr. J, I suspect I would not have an arm, so I am truly appreciative. But let me tell you -- it was a very challenging process!

Thank you bdmgoggins. I KNOW I can do this. But I am feeling so pressured financially now because of all the mix up with my insurance. I had my first health care emergency in 10 years in the spring, when I had a kidney stone. I met my insurance deductible AND my out of pocket. I had to negotiate a monthly payment to pay off the hospital, then my insurance went out of business on October 1, and now I have a new deductible and new $6400 out of pocket for 3 mos of the year, followed by ANOTHER new one for 1 mo. in January before I go on Medicare. I couldn't even go to the emergency room for xrays because my new insurance PAYS NOTHING even for emergencies until you meet the deductible. So I waited 3 days before I decided this is so serious I have to see a doctor. So thanks everyone for your support. I really need it.

Insurance is a pain in the neck for all of us these days. I also have to go on payment plan. I am thinking of elective surgery on my huge bunion...and would have to do it before 2017 to avoid huge bills!

Can you hang in there for 4 months? See if it heals?

Bdmgoggins -- I had that thought in my head, which is one reason I waited to go to the doctor. I have a very high pain threshold and I heal very well. But if my shoulder freezes, fixing it later will be much more difficult and much more extensive rehab, plus it's a bit nerve wracking not to know what's going on in there when there's all that metal and bone graft in there already. What if some screw is loose and migrates? I think I have to bite the bullet and get xrays and then make a decision based on what the doctors says. He may have a bad bedside manner, but he's brilliant and he saved my arm once. I will trust whatever he tells me. Frankly, it hurts A LOT today.

Hugs. At a distance, so I don't hurt you. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone. I am reduced to giving people one-armed hugs, so it's just as well to send and receive hugs at a distance.
