Here are the rules of Eselstyn's program in their simplest form :

You may not eat anything with a mother or a face (no meat, poultry, or fish).
You cannot eat dairy products.
You must not consume oil of any kind—not a drop. (Yes, you devotees of the Mediterranean Diet, that includes olive oil, as I’ll explain in Chapter 10.)
Generally, you cannot eat nuts or avocados.

You can eat a wonderful variety of delicious, nutrient-dense foods :

All vegetables except avocado. Leafy green vegetables, root vegetables, veggies that are red, green, purple, orange, and yellowand everything in between
All legumes—beans, peas, and lentils of all varieties.
All whole grains and products, such as bread and pasta, that are made from them—as long as they do not contain added fats.
All fruits.

It works. In the first continuous twelve-year study of the effects of nutrition in severely ill patients, which he describes in this book, those who complied with his program achieved total arrest of clinical progression and significant selective reversal of coronary artery disease. In fully compliant patients, he saw seen angina disappear in a few weeks and abnormal stress test results return to normal.

If you or family members have cardiac issues, please read the book. Or at least look at the website. Most of us will die from heart disease. All of my family has. Look at the stats friends..this is a food borne illness. We can save our own lives.

But eating a high fat, high meat consumption diet that leads to coronary artery disease isn't extreme? The standard American diet is killing us and as it is adopted in other countries begins to kill them too. Obesity, diabetes, etc..these are the diseases that we export... Bypass surgeries, stents and caths are all extreme too. Lots of contempt here prior to investigation. Might want to least look at some of the data before you reject out of hand. This diet improves angina pain within 2 weeks...anybody out there with angina or documented heart disease?

But it doesn't have to be one extreme or the other. I, for example, eat avocados and olive oil, and have no health issues. There is a happy nedium.

Good job there with lots of veggies and leafy greens. I like raw veggies from my 99 Cent Store. Your diet looks wonderful.

Actually recent science has shown that high fat, high meat consumption does NOT necessarily lead to coronary artery disease. Mostly the culprit is sugar and its role forming plaque in the arteries. I would imagine that the diet that you have described also does not allow sugar, though from what you have written I do not know what is allowed. The facts are, if you eliminate fat from your diet your liver will MAKE it, as cholesterol is essential for many bodily processes - particularly your brain function. Many years ago I knew a very slim person whose cholesterol was high so her doctor took her off meat fat. It then went higher so he took her off all fat and it went higher still. She was terrified and it was so unnecessary. Most of my family dies from heart disease but I pay more attention to triglycerides (their role is forming plaque) which come from sugar and high carb diets and likely high fasting insulin plays a role there too. So I am not interested in investigating this diet any further. It sounds similar to the Pritikin Diet which studies showed reduced cholesterol but the interesting thing is that over a longer time (beyond the time frame of the great results they reported) the dieters developed high cholesterol. It is likely that their livers started producing it. If you believe people have been sold a bill of goods about the SAD diet (I agree, it's terrible) and having surgeries, educate yourself on the cholesterol issue. I believe "Cholesterol Clarity" might be an eye-opener for you.

@Dianne.........You are talking in extremes. You are saying it's all or nothing and I can't agree with that. Oils/fats are needed. Does that mean I use an entire bottle of olive oil in one day. NO, of course not. Plus, not all fats are equal. I can't say everyone walking around with CAD/CVD was eating a diet high in fat and over consuming meat. Genetics does play a part in these kinds of diseases/conditions. For instance, my Dad is at least 150 kilograms and he doesn't have CAD/CVD. His diet is pretty high in regards to animal fat. He LOVES his greasy foods. He has ZERO heart disease, ZERO stents, ZERO Angina, ZERO Bypass, ZERO Cath done, etc. I think if someone is trying to "improve" their Angina with diet alone that wouldn't be very wise. If you are having Angina attacks a vessel or vessels is/are already pretty much occluded. The damage is done. I have read articles that are pointing the finger more at sugar vs. fat in regards to CVD/CAD. Extremes don't work in either direction EVER.

Again I would say read the book, consider the data. Look at ghe stats on heart disease. Most of us will die that way. I wanted to be an active participant in my health. I know too many with caths, stents, bypasses. And I am effortlessly thin on this food plan. It is important to me too to not eat animals. For many, that is not an issue. I know about slaughter houses. I choose not to have that moral wrong. I would never kill any animal myself. Personal choices. I would encourage anyone to look at any videos on PETA. A game changer for me. Made me weep. Can't do it friends. Cannot eat animals any longer.Appalling cruelty.

yes and there are also books like Eat Fat Get Thin. It's all about what works for you, because we are all different.

I guess what I am wanting to say about this is that your favored diet is not the ONLY way to prevent heart disease. Dr. Atkins' very different diet was known to protect against heart disease - in fact, he was a cardiologist. His approach was utilized for over 30 years (before his death in ~2002). I appreciate that you want to end cruelty to animals. Removing all fat from your diet really doesn't impact that and probably isn't necessary to prevent heart disease. Your stated goal is to get to 17.2 percent body fat (underweight) and I imagine you'll achieve this with your program.

When you say "most of us die from heart disease," you can carry it one step further and say "all of us die from heart stoppage!" The cause for the stoppage may vary, but it is the stoppage that kills you! I agree with Engeland, all really extreme diets may work for a while but are not sustainable in the long run, for "normal" people, at least. And if you can't live long-term with a program, it is not really good for most people because then you have the yo-yo dieting problems. Everyone has to find for themselves what works -- while I don't have a problem with people putting various methods "out there," I do have a problem with someone pushing their program as "the one and only." And, by the way, avocados are technically fruit, not vegetables!

@Pandasmom.......You said it right. One needs something that he/she can sustain and extremes aren't sustainable.
