I had a surprising end to my day yesterday. At about 7 pm my Hubby left home to go pick up our daughter from work. While he was gone his cell phone which was charging rang. It was his Mom so I picked up the call. Her and her husband were about 13 miles away from our house. Were we home? Could they stop out to see us? What could I say...I don't lie...so... And did I have something that I could make them some sandwiches with? Well I was just going into the kitchen to start supper so it would be hot when my hubby got home with our daughter. Time to make it stretch from feeding 3 to feeding 5. Her husband is diabetic, so I started some brat patties cooking and then whipped up some angel food cupcakes for desert while they drove over. Then added baked beans and noodle/pea/cheese salad. With the desert that is what they got. Beggars shouldn't be choosy is what I think.
They ended up sleeping on an air bed in our living room last night as she was too tired to continue driving after stopping and eating. Upset our entire morning schedule today as well. Oh well...I tried to be a gracious host. Our guard dogs outside barked a lot last night which did not allow them a full nights sleep. We are so used to it we don't hear them unless they get really worked up. I heard them a couple times last night. I can't control deer and racoons that hang out around our house at night...

Well, it sounds like you handled your awkward situation very well, & hats off to you for being so considerate & polite about it. I think if they're feeling free to just barge in unannounced, you can feel fine about just treating them like family & not getting fancy or putting yourself out too much. Just an idea ~ if it was me & they did this very often at all, I wouldn't hesitate to ask them if tey would pick up this-or-that at the store on their way in, if there was anything I thought would make prep's for dinner or other aspects of their stay any easier for me. That's what I do all the time with our DD's, who live about 30 miles away & often visit, especially on Saturdays. They also help Dad & I out with farm & house chores that are getting harder for us to do these days. It makes it much easier to relax & enjoy having company if they're willing to help make it easier on you to have them visit. That's my idea anyway. I hope your day today is going smoothly, & is filled with good things. Hugs, GLAMMER

Thanks WFN! I thought I did pretty well for no notice and was able to provide a diabetic friendly desert to boot!

Good for you! When you have a chance to connect with family, grab it! Down the road you will have absolutely NO regrets! I think that is what "seize the day" means, to roll with the changes and make it a success! You are Good! (((((hugs)))))
