Hipaagrammy's Journal, 12 September 2014

I'm happy with my weight loss. I was concerned this might be the week I didn't see the scale move and I was preparing myself. I know that day will come and I need to be ready to stick to my new lifestyle no matter what.

GoodMan and I were talking about something someone said on another journal post (sorry, I don't remember who said it). They were talking about the terminology we use. How "losing" weight sounds unintentional (we don't "lose" something on purpose). They suggested to say we "released" the weight - meaning we did it purposefully. GoodMan took exception with that term too. He thinks the term "release" brings up a picture of gently "letting go". GoodMan suggested something more like "got rid of", or "extinguished", or "burned off", even "dumped". His suggestion is to have a mindset of the hard work required and the intentionality of its removal. I like the way that man thinks (usually)...but I can't imagine telling someone I "dumped 1 pound this week!" LOL!!!

On other topics ~

No sign of mice for 3 nights...perhaps the Great Mouse War of '14 is over?

GoodMan and I are heading in to Grand Rapids for lunch with DIL#6 and Granddaughter#16, and then I have an appointment at the dermatologist to have a basal cell carcinoma removed. Afterward we will head back to DS#6's house for dinner and then back home again.

The weather here in Michigan is cool and rainy. I don't expect to get much done around our house on Saturday. If the weather cooperates we will need to do some yard work at the Reed City house on Sunday.

Oh, and the guy we were counting on to do the rest of the renovations on the log cabin house in Big Rapids has told us his regular job is picking up so he won't have time to do our work. Now we'll need to find another person willing, able, honest, and well-priced. I'm so bummed he can no longer do the work - but very happy for his family that he found steady work.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Nice loss

I now live in town, when I lived in the country we had cats. My house in a small neighborhood backs onto a large city park and creek. The woods and creek go down the bluff to the Missouri River one direction and up past the Truman Library the other. So there are lots of various critters. After the first mouse invasion, most all foods are now in plastic containers, not boxes or bags. I know where I've caught them in the past so that's where the traps go. Sweep them up trap and all and into the trash. So I get the cheap ones. We used to get snakes inside occasionally in the fall when we lived in a rented pre-civil war plantation house in the country. The basement was rock. Most were harmless, it was the occasional rattle snake in the I didn't appreciate. Had a cat that was good at snakes.

Wholefoodnut...that just makes my skin crawl...I guess I must have that snake phobia...I really don't know what I'd do. I know I'll see one around our property sometime - probably in the pump room for the pool since it is heated slightly to keep the pipes from freezing, and cool and damp in the summer (oh how I dread going in that place), but so far I've not seen one. If there was ever one inside?...I really don't think I could live here.

Don't live there any more, a long time ago, bout 30 years ago. Snakes aren't a big issue for me as most are so beneficial, they eat the mice, moles, and critters we don't want. I see garter snakes often in my yard, I let them be. Just like spiders most are good. Bats eat tons of mosquitoes, don't want them in my house, had that happen in an apartment I lived in back in 1972. Might build some bat houses with the grandkids next spring, there are lots of them in the woods behind my house. Nature's way is interesting, fen beneficial if you encourage it.

Fen should be often.

We've had about 8 or 10 bats in this house too. This living in the woods is like critter central. We have an enclosed pool room and somehow they get in there (I think because of all the ceiling fans - bats follow air waves and the fans much be attracting them) and then end up in the great room. At first I was really freaked out by the bats - even though I know they help with the mosquito population, but now I know how to get rid of them easily and they can be tolerated for the length of time it takes to get them outside.

I don't mind snakes outside. If you see black snakes, the poisonous copper heads stay away and that is good :) But I had a problem when a couple came inside my house. Guess they were following the mice. I live in a small town now, that was at my other house. Peanut butter on the traps worked great, or a little bread. I get more freaked out over sneaky spiders.

BTW, I love nature. The spiders, snakes, bats, etc just need to stay outside :)

You do not want bats inside. Even though they are mostly scared of people they can be pretty nasty at times, sides you don't really quano in your house LOL. I was pretty good at getting them out in the old apartment. Scared me though the first time I found them, was like 21 at the time. Really an enclosed pool, how cool!! If somehow I'd get rich would love an enclosed never ending lap pool. Right now sweat out paying the bills every month.. trying to cut them.

Yea, definitely they can stay outside. The big scary black snakes are harmless and good to have around. I have not seen any nearby my house. When my kids were little and lived in the plantation house we had one that liked to sun on my porch railing. They kids would pet it, the snake seemed to like it. He'd be there most summer days. My dog and the cats never bothered him. Ex DH's son had pythons, the idea of having them as pets gave me the creeps having them as pets..,

Wholefoodnut ~ Yes, we like the pool too. It has been expensive though. When we bought the house we thought we'd keep it open all year, but keeping it heated is too expensive. So we keep it open until the grandkids come for our family Christmas celebration (usually the second weekend in December) and then open it up again for the grandkids at Easter. We manage to squeeze a couple of extra months out of it by having it enclosed. I wish I could use it more often but it takes 2 people to uncover it so I have to wait for GoodMan or someone else to be here...and I know this sounds like a first-world problem, but it gets difficult changing clothes more than once a day because I wear thigh high compression stockings for my venous insufficiency and they are a royal pain to put on and take off.

omg - we had a bat in the house last night...trapped it finally under a saucepan of all things, then slid a heavy large envelope behind it...hubby carried it outside and let it go, but don't want one of those things flapping around in here again! lol - was kind of cute tho, once it landed on the wall and sat still...

Kmkjmomma ~ I read somewhere (probably on the internet) how to get the bats out. Since they are drawn to air movement like fans, etc. you turn all the ceiling fans off, shut all but one door. At my house I close off all the other parts of the house and then open one of the slider doors. Then I stand on the deck and clap my hands. They are drawn to the air waves of my hands clapping and they fly right out past me. It literally takes less than 5 minutes as long as I can keep everyone else out of there. All the jumping up and down and waving hands confuses them. As long as my clapping is the only thing they "hear", they will head right out.

Oh that would work well with the bats. Too bad it doesn't work with mice.. Oh yeah, those compression stockings are a pain. Takes forever to get them on properly. I don't remember the reasoning but they had me wearing them after my cervical fusion for awhile. I think I still have that pair somewhere. Daughter has a pool, she is switching it to a salt water system next year to make keeping it clean easier. I would love one of those endless smallish ones that I could just swim in. I used to love just doing laps. I would want to use the salt as I'm allergic to the chlorine chemicals. Would also love it enclosed and heated so I could swim all year. Won't happen on my salary:)).

Have you tried a flute? Worked for the Pied Piper. I would like to have a video camera when you're standing out there on the porch all alone clapping your hands, grammy. I think you just need a big ole snake for those mice. They love them!

So funny where these diet/exercise threads go.. am hopefully saving money by switching to a strictly internet based TV rather than satellite thanks to Chris and Bella on a different thread. Getting it switched this week.

Glad you're going to save money, wholefoodnut. Between Netflix, Amazon Prime, and over-the-air shows, my biggest problem is deciding what to watch. Even with my lowest-tier DSL, I get very little buffering on my tablets. I assume that Netflix paying Verizon for faster speeds has helped. I've thought about getting Hulu Plus, which would jack my television bill all the way up to $22.66 plus $26 for DSL. The closest cable comes to what I'm paying is Verizon FIOS' offer of $50 for internet plus HBO, HBO Go, and local tv. That's still almost $10 more than what I'm paying now. plus FIOS goes up after a year. So I will probably ride the DSL train to the end of the line, or at least until I move.

I'm going with the lowest uverse $24.95 a month and then the Hulu and Netflix about $15.00 each for those. Whole lot better than $40.00 internet and over $100.00 for basic direct TV!! If I want something on amazon prime I can use my daughter's access. Added bonus, found out I could get more on my cell plan and save over $40.00. So switched that too. Thanks, Chris and Bella for information a bit ago.

Actually it will be even more, I was wrong each subscription is $7.99 a month, not $15.00.0

wholefoodnut, I believe more than one household can share Netflix so you may want to check that out.
