Yahoo! Approaching the 10 lb loss mark and I have been at this diet for about 5 weeks which makes me very, very happy. I wanted to lose between 1.5 and 2 lbs a week, so I am right on track.
The other challenge I wanted to meet was eating healthy and making meals from scratch. There are some extra benefits to doing this: cutting out the nasty chemical additives, saving money on eating "fast food", and eating more for the same calorie intake. I have definitely experienced these benefits.
I keep expecting to feel better or more energetic, but that's probably a little unrealistic. Over 40 years of eating junk isn't going to be offset by a month of eating real food, is it? :-)
The nice thing is, this way of eating is becoming "habit" already. I looked at donuts twice yesterday and each time it was, "ick" instead of "mmm". Even the last two grocery trips haven't been able to entice me into buying junk. In the past when I have dieted, I restricted calories without making changes to my eating habits, and it never lasted. As soon as I lost the weight, I went back to eating the same old junk and put it all back on, with interest...So, I am feeling hopeful that I can keep this up.
My next challenge is going to be putting up some healthy meals in the freezer so that when I don't have the energy to cook, I can just heat something healthy up, instead of resorting to pre-packaged meals full of chemicals and salt.
The inspiration for this weight-loss journey came from a high cholesterol report from my last blood test...and a family history of type II diabetes. I don't like taking any medications, so I really want to nip these problems in the bud, now.
Still need to work on increasing my exercise, without bringing on a fibro flare...haven't got the hang of that yet. They say it's all about moderation, and I am just not a moderate gal...sigh...when I feel good, I overdo it, then I pay the price and it's a while before I can do anything again. I am just hoping that losing the weight will take the pain in my feet away, so I can get out and walk a bit more. I ordered some new walking shoes, which will hopefully be comfortable enough to get me out of my croc flip flops. I know flip flops are horrible for walking, but the last pair of expensive walking shoes I bought caused even more pain! Frustrating.
I made the zucchini chips the other night and they were delicious,I basted them with olive oil and sprinkled them with salt and a little parmesan cheese. They didn't even make it off the baking sheet, lol ! Sadly 2+ hours in the oven is just to much energy to justify making them very often. Also, it would help to have a mandoline to slice them consistently thin, I did the best I could with a knife, but the chips didn't cook evenly.

I have an exercise plan that I'm comfortable with and it's not too much for me. You should make one too. There is not a good reason to overexert yourself and wake up sore and not be able to exercise for the next few days.

Great job Chris! Isn't it amazing how when you start eating healthy, those junk foods just don't look good anymore. I don't like the way I feel after eating a donut. It tastes good going down, but then I feel...well...heavy and sluggish!

its great that you love your new eating habits! people who diet and hate what they are doing can never keep to it... I think with this site and the inspiration of not wanting meds you are going to go really far! good luck!

Thanks for the support kristyanne3! The community here at FS is awesome! I know what you mean newkim, I am slowly losing my taste for sweets, which is a huge change. Hmmm snezica, you are right, I should have a plan, I'll give it some thought. Trouble is, with fibro, my ability doesn't always match up to my desire...sigh...

Isn't it great how soon deliberate, practiced, enforced behavior becomes automatic? The self education and practical application of what you have learned is a huge hurdle and you are over it.

You are doing excellent. You got a plan and you are sticking to it. Glad you are picking up healthier habits. It will definitely pay off in the end. My nutritionist said that when eating healthier, we should shop on the outer perimeter of the supermarket. All the junk is in between the isle. It took a minute for me to catch on, but basically, she was right. Again, keep up the good work. You are 10 lbs ahead.

i walk in sandals. i do not go very far or very fast. i have plantar fasciitis. i walk in my birks. i have bought more expensive sneakers to walk in and they didn't help. so i just do what i can. 10 pounds, yay! i forget what number i started on, but i think i am at about the same place as you as far as weight lost. i'll have to hover over my icon to see for sure. i've been doing this a little longer though. i was gaining about a pound a week before i started, so anything lost is good. i'm glad you're enjoying cooking and eating healthier.

Plantar fasciitis sucks! Just when I want to walk, the pain in my feet is debilitating. Fortunately, I can ride my bike to the pool, but even walking around the house is too painful right now. Sometimes I'm not sure if is plantar fasciitis, which I've had flare up before, or if it might be sciatic nerve pain that radiates all the way from my hips to my toes. I agree...not gaining is almost as good as loosing. I've been struggling against the gain without making progress in the past. But I think we are doing the right things now!

When I happened to read your mention of plantar fasciitis, I thought I'd jump in to give you a little tip...take it or leave it! =) My grandma had it for years, and I assumed it was an independent condition and nothing could be done (except the orthotics and special shoes she wore). About 2-3 years ago, I started having symptoms myself (I'm now 48). It was mostly bad in the morning, when my feet first hit the floor. Last year I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's, an autoimmune disease that attacks the thyroid. I've probably had it for 5 years or so, but it took a long time to find a doctor who listened to me and knew how to test. I changed my diet, started on some supplements, and soon began feeling much better. I won't go into more detail than that, but one thing I didn't realize till months later was that my plantar fasciitis was gone! It came up in a discussion at my Hashimoto's 411 Facebook group, and I was shocked to learn it's a symptom of thyroid problems! My grandma was on thyroid meds for about 30 years, and only now I'm finding out that many of her health problems were connected with her thyroid (she was probably under-medicated). Here's a brief article, but there's lots more info online: http://www.myhealthylivingcoach.com/thyroid-problems-symptoms-and-signs/ Also, you might check some of the basic information at: www.hashimotos411.com The estimate is that 90% of those who are hypothyroid have Hashimoto's...and thyroid problems are very under-diagnosed and under-treated in this country. I don't know if FatSecret will notify me of any replies, Gnewfry and ChrisSpark, so if I don't hear from you again, good luck!

It is wonderful that you are eating healthier and the junk foods don't appeal to you like they used to. You will definitely get to your goal with that attitude! Take care and have fun!

I have had something similar in my heel, and have to have a special insert made to put in my shoe. Check with your podiatrist. Hopes it gets better.

Thanks for the information DianaBanana, I will discuss with my doctor if thyroid testing is advisable. Thanks kattay, I am having fun trying new recipes, who'd have thunk it, I enjoy cooking. Made some delicious cheesy garlic zucchini bread last night that is to die for... Podiatrist, hmmm...I'll see if we have those around here. Thanks C67241.

How annoying that the link is cut off, but I guess anyone can find info by googling "plantar fasciitis thyroid." That was just a really good overview. Good luck!

Chris, this is so cool that your new way of eating has become habit! It's got to feel wonderful knowing you can eat well, get to a healthy weight and find a way you can eat healthy from now all - and do all of those at once! Congratulations on the 10! One thing I've noticed about feeling better - it seems to sneak up on you. All of a sudden one day, you find yourself doing things that just wiped you out 2 months ago. I'll bet these things are already happening for you! I know with fibro it's a delicate dance to find the level of "how much activity is juuuuuust right".

Thanks for the kind words Vickie, I think I have to come to terms with feeling better in very small increments...not like when I was younger and increased exercise made huge improvements, lol. Sigh...patience and perseverance...patience and perseverance...

Chris, it's also my plan to make some foods low in sodium and freeze them. It would be so convenient. :)

i do have thyroid problems, so that is very interesting. i don't think i have hashimoto's. my endocrinologist has never mentioned it. the plantar fasciitis is pretty much under control. i did see a podiatrist and got the special, custom orthotic and wore that for about a year. now i just have to wear my birks. if i get a flare, i'll wear my birks all the time. but normally i can walk around barefoot. it really was a lot of pain before i got the custom inserts. chris, i don't think sciatica runs down all the way to your feet. my symptoms were a lot of heel pain.
