Smilesong's Journal, 07 April 2014

I have periodically tried intermittent fasting (IF). Usually experimental, to jump start weight loss. I take a week, choose either every day or every other day. My length of fasting has varied from 16-36 hours at a time to test my own limits. For instance eating my last meal on a Monday at 6pm and then not eating again (zero calories) until sometime between Noon - 6pm on Tuesday. I am never concerned about the calorie intake because it's about my tolerating the fast and building my tolerance level. My results from just compressing my weekly eating window or number of hours I allow myself to eat is typically the same if not better than jump starting a diet on Atkins’s 2 week induction phase.

I am starting this week off focused on just IF-ing and increasing my fruits and vegetables; which is always a challenge for me since I hate them. I have done IF-ing enough that I feel the longest length of fasting time that is comfortable for me is no more than 24 hours. It's easier to do this during the week with a strict working schedule. So, I have penciled in my calendar to have "lunch" (not my only "meal" but my only "feeding" time) at 3pm every day. I plan to pack my lunch daily but need to make sure I include all my daily calories and a variety of foods.

It is so easy to run to the local soup and salad place on the corner like everyone else in the office does but I will just have to refrain. Eating this late in the day helps to keep hunger away until bedtime. The biggest challenge is in the morning. Come 7am, I will be at hour 16 since I last ate and I need to make it 8 more hours until I can eat again. This is where multiple cups of hot black tea come in handy.

I have done this many times before but I have never done it on consecutive days for a long period of time. I am looking to do this for the rest of April. But, I am not just tracking my weight. I am also tracking my blood pressure. IF-ing is meant to help reduce both which is why I am looking to include more IF-in my eating plan.

You have a lot more will power than I do. I'm ready to eat my family alive after 8 hours:)

I've been doing IF for almost two years. I love eating this way. I prefer this over low carb (although I'm not sure if it's more effective than Low Carb). It's definitely more do-able for me. Lately, I have not been eating until about 5pm. I do drink coffee with half/half in the A.M. and then sugar free ice tea for lunch. It's been working for me...

That's awesome Libertino! 2 years!!! I have only been dabbling for about a year testing to see if I can stand it. There are good number of people that have used it very successfully it seems. At first fasting felt harsh for me but now I have grown use to it. I am curious though, do you find that the half & half throws you off track and slows down the weight loss? I love cream in my tea but got much better results when I cut it out completely, letting my body continue post sleep to draw the fat out of the cells for energy throughout the morning. Are you cutting calories too?

I've been IF since Jan. 30th. Its 36 hour window each time. On the fast I consume 500 calories of high fat, 90% fat. I lose typically .4 to 1.8 lbs per fast. I LOVE IT. I fast/feast every other day keeping calories close to 1200/1300 also high fat. Super low carbs. I started w/ Atkins but after 3 months 11 lbs later I stopped losing. I then blended low carb, high fat/Atkins w/ IF. Did I say I love it? I've lost 30.6 to date. I have 88.8 lbs more to go! It works!!!

IF has been so liberating for me - especially after realising that it does NOT slow down your metabolism or put you in starvation mode. The human body is more resilient than that. Half/Half does not slow/stall my weight loss, as it's only about 30 calories.

DEBORAHG382...YOU ARE MUCH STRONGER THAN ME!!! I know I will loose tons more if I combine low carbing with IF-ing but just can't go there yet. Power On!!!

Libertino85....I agree whole heartedly! I feel completely unchained by this method of eating and I am shocked it is not more mainstream. IF-ing is the key, the path and the real final option I feel I can actual do long term. Hoorah!
