GLAMMER's Journal, 10 March 2014

I'm so bummed, & disappointed in myself! I went out to eat with my daughter yesterday, & was shocked when my scale this morning said I've gained 6 lbs since last week! Its battery needs replaced, but I double checked so I think this is my true weight & that I did gain 6lbs. Waaah! But I'm not giving up. As long as we keep trying we're still succeeding, no matter what the scale says, & the weight WILL come off. I had an appointment last TUE with my Ortho Surgeon's MA Mike. He said pretty much as I expected, that I have to lose the 25 lbs I've gained since I had my right hip & knee replaced in 2012. The infections in my hip incision had me so sick, weak, hurting & tired all the time I couldn't do much of anything, & exercise was pretty much out of the question til about June or July of 2013. Since then I've been trying to behave about eating, & exercising some, but it wasn't nearly enough. Now I'm back to seriously trying, & I've also decided that starting tomorrow I will record my daily food intake & exercise. Mike set up monthly weigh-in appts at their office, & I know this will be a great incentive & a source of accountability for me, & will really help me lose the weight. My 1st weigh-in is on April 4th, about 3 weeks away. I aim to lose 6 lbs by then, & 8 to 10 more lbs by the next weigh-in on May 2nd. As I've said before, I want to lose slowly, to adjust to the changes in my eating, & my body, etc. At the rate I've stated (about 2 lbs per week), I will have lost all the weight I've gained since the surgeries & infections by my June weigh-in which isn't set up yet, but that isn't far away, & I'm excited! Soon after that I should get to see Dr. VanHorne & get the date for my left hip replacement. So, in spite of this set back, I actually have lots to look forward to. YAY! :o)

Restaurant food has TONS of salt in it. That is probably why you went up so fast. Just eat right and keep to your goal of 2 lbs a week. That is a nice rate to maintain.

you can do it!

The 6 pound gain is likely undigested food and water retention. I had the exact same thing happen to me last week, except I went up 9 pounds. It came right back off after I flushed out with water and leveled my intake of carbs. I hate that you had to go through so much with your hip. But, like you said, the weight will come off with consistency. You've got this.

Thanks so much everyone for your encouragement, it is helping a lot. I've dealt with joint problems all my life due to a genetic defect in my family. But my problems are much worse than my sister's, who is 8 years older. Also, 2 of my 3 daughters have had knee problems, & our middle daughter had 2 corrective surgeries, but my sister's 3 kids have hardly had any, just my nephew had a weak hip at birth that was corrected in a few months with a brace. My Sis also looks younger than me even though she's much older, which just isn't fair, LOL! I think it's because of all the health problems I've had that she hasn't, but her life is very tough emotionally & mine isn't, so I would think it would all even out. Oh well, I just have to do my best with what I have to work with. Maybe when I'm skinnier I'll finally look better than her, LOL! Seriously I don't care that much about my looks, I just want to feel better & be able to do more & have fun in life. I know I felt better after losing weight before, so I'm really looking forward to feeling that way again. Now I'm off to use my exercycle! ;)

K & 2MC, I'm sure you're right about the gain being water retention & all, & that it will come back off quickly, especially as I continue to eat right & exercise as much as possible. At least I'm hoping so, hee hee! (( BIG HUGS TO YOU BOTH! ))

Hey, Glammer!!! Don't let it get you down. Most of this 6 pounds is water weight from the change in diet, or increased sodium, or so many other factors. You can sooo do this. It is amazing how fast water weight drops off... let it motivate you! :D One other thing I was thinking... if that face-to-face helps to motivate you (like your doc's appt), you might try a group like TOPS (take off pounds sensibly). They usually meet once a week and have locations all over the US. They are a non-profit, so it isn't as shiny as Weight Watchers or anything, but it is a heckuva lot cheaper. Take a look into it. They have a .org on the internet here: www . tops . org.

Overeaters Anonymous is a good group too. I used to go to AA meetings when .i needed a meeting every day. Just dont go to one that has food! They are very supportive. I am a food addict and all I used to say is Hi, I'm Kris and I'm an addict.

Thanks so much Rob & Kris for your kind thoughts & ideas. I am feeling much better today, thank you. I've been working hard on being good so far this week so I think they scale will be friendlier to me when I weigh in this SUN. Thst's some great advice about TOPS, WW, OA & AA, but I live way out in the country, so meeting places are all too far away. I only ever attended one weight loss group meeting, when I was a teen. I went to TOPS with a friend of my Mom's. She was driving & we had a car accident going home. Neither of us was seriously hurt, but she didn't have a car anymore to attend the meetings & I couldn't drive yet, so that was it. I've been doing fine though as long as I keep checking in here on FS, using my journal, meeting new buddies, etc. I've started recording my food intake which I wasn't doing before, & that is also helping me to get on here more often, & making me more aware of what & how much I'm eating. I hate to record my food, but know it is very important & helpful. Kris, it is so true that all addictions are similar, so AA meetings would work fine too, though if they knew some people might consider a food addiction less serious than alcoholism, but since both can kill you I don't see a huge difference. If you need daily, or semi-weekly meetings for success I say do whatever it takes, so good for you gal! (( Hugs to you both ))!
