Johanne's Journal, 18 January 2011

I did two things today . . . huge for me. I threw away a perfectly good coffee maker. The carafe had cracked, but it still worked, though you're not supposed to use them if they're cracked. GE doesn't make a replacement pot for the five cup coffee maker. I took down my Christmas tree.

Now, most of you are going to say, what's the big deal. Most of you would have thrown out that coffee maker when the carafe first cracked. Most of you had your trees down in the first week of January or before.

The big deal is, the coffee maker still worked. The old me would have put it away somewhere to save until I found a replacement pot. (yeah, right, like that would happen.) As for the tree, this was it's fourth Christmas up . . . continuously for three years. It had hundreds of ornaments, each of which had to be dusted after all that time. The tree itself is 17 years old and has to be taken apart branch by branch and packed away. It's a fairly time consuming task for this little old lady.

What I did today, for me, is as important as the changes I've made in my diet. I've been making little changes in the house over the last few months, for instance, making sure all of my dishes are done and put away before I go to bed. This was the first major thing I've done. I threw out a working appliance and I took down the tree. It took two days.

These may be a no-brainer for the rest of you. For me? They were immense. I'm feeling pulled together. I hope to keep up the momentum with the house, as I have with my weight. Baby steps. I'll get there.

Way to go!! :) I just took down my tree last week which for me was big because usually it's still Christmas in July around here. Actually, I toyed with the idea of just changing the decoration for the current holiday. ;) Check out www.FlyLady.net for help with stuff around your house.

Thanks GJ. I have a link to FlyLady. They're still a bit too busy for me. I do check in, but I have reminders sent in digest form and I'm just getting started on my notebook. I'm glad to know I'm not the only Christmas in July person. And, of course, if you've left it up until July, Christmas is just around the corner. LOL!

A powerful journal entry in it's simple honesty. I can relate Johanne.

Thanks Info. I have so far to go but I felt I had to acknowledge a start. What you don't acknowledge can't change.

Your so cute. I love the way you think. Taking small steps in any thing is the best way, or you get over whelmed...Bren

"what you don't acknowledge can't change" - love that Johanne. Thanks.

Thanks Bren. I don't know about the "cute" part. My kids might dispute that. I won't be able to dance under the full moon with you. We are expecting 3"-8" of snow beginning at 3 p.m. or thereabouts. LOL!

You're welcome Z's. I just wish I were clever enough to have penned it. :-)

great job Jo! I also have a hard time throwing things that are perfectly good away. But the small steps are the building blocks to the big changes.

You're on a roll, Jo! The hard part is getting that momentum. I don't know why I had put off cleaning the top of my dusty fridge for so long, but I finally did it over the weekend and that got me moving on to other things I'd been meaning to clean for months. It felt so good! I purged a lot of useless crap that I'd been accumulating in drawers too. I'm like you -- I would normally save a half-operational coffee pot too. lol

Fantastic! As you know I'm also working on the cleaning and clutter, and I understand how important it is. My task that has taken three weeks to complete was to clean out my kitchen cabinets. I donated a bunch of canned goods I will never eat and I also threw away non-stick pans that are scratched and can't be cooked with anymore. It feels great! That tree must have been a huge ordeal to take down! Nice work :)

Thanks Pixi. I sure hope so. Coco, procrastination is a mental thing even when the obvious is staring you in the face. I have it worse than most. Congrats on the kitchen. I have yet to tackle those particular tasks. Katie, my cabinets are about four years behind as well. I have purged them of outdated and unhealthy food, but still have a long way to go. Good on you for getting rid of the pans. Now that I'm cooking again, I need all new everything. I think my youngest daughter slowly but surely purloined all my cookware over the last few years. It's certainly not here! LOL! Thanks for the pats ladies!!!

Jo, I am so bad about keeping things like that...lol I don't throw anythign out, so when I do it is HUGE!!! As for taking down the tree....Johanne, I am soooo proud of you. What a great statement about the changes that you are making in your life! Wow...that is awesome, I am just flabbergasted...you should feel like a huge weight has been lifted from your shoulders. I am a bit of a packrat and when I do something like that, it is the most freeing feeling in the world...such a simple little thing, like throwing out a coffee pot, can make you feel sooooo powerful!! Hugs, and good for you! I am delighted that you are making as much progress in your surroundings as you are in your body!

Bren, I thought of you. Our clouds were just too dense. I'm sending love back. Steph, every step I take in the house feels like a weight removed. I wish I were physically capable of doing it faster, but I'm treating it like my weight. Every little step helps. That's one more pound, one more item, gone from my life. I really do feel more in control with each small move in the right direction. It's gotten to the point that, when I fall off track, it doesn't derail me for long. It's all becoming habit. I'm so happy about that.
