Day 67 (Week 10): 10 TO 30 POUNDS BY November OR BUST

Week 4 Cruise to Lose!

Many wishes of clear skies and smooth of sailing sent to all of you wonderful, health-minded, lovely FS peoples!!!!!!!!!!

I had an absolute BLAST this week-end. My food intake was not the best but man did I get up and move :) The 3lbs up from mostl;y slat I am sure I will shed before the week is out but the lasting memories of having that much fun fencing will last a goodly long while and keep me motivated to keep on keeping on!

So as promised, details :)
So I started the day warming up with a good friend John McPherson (I am going to use SCA names to help with the flavor). I had not fenced John one on one in years, I think! I used to practice with him weekly when we lived closer. So that was pure enjoyment. I would have liked to go 'round with him more but we both got winded fairly quickly. But it was a warm up and it certainly loosened us up and got us ready for the melees to come!

Next we mved on to some line on line field work. John turned out to command my team. I was ont he same side as my Don (best way to describe it is that I am his formal student) Cubstride and with my Husband (Aiden in the SCA) as well as my don's don, Donnan and couple others. So we lined up advanced towards the other line in an orderly fashion and wel lI died quickly and got to watch the rest LOL. Not that quick, actually. we executed a few maneuvers and eventually I think we did win when it got down to only 1-2 people on either side. We did this several times before moving on tot he next game.

This one is called paranoia and boy is it fun. Everyone places their sword tips touching int he center of a circle. The marshal calls "allez" (basically "go" in French) and we all back up. no one can attack until the "circle is broken" (official no longer a circle as in some one starts moving around not just backwards) and then it is every man/woman for themselves. Sometimes alliances form to take others out. But those are dangerous too because you could turn or they could turn on you at the drop of a hat! :) It's also actually possible to "win" even if you are armed and and cannot throw a "kill shot" because sometimes people "double kill" and if you are alive even if armless you win! Donnan tried that but alas the other two did not kill each other :) In one of the games I found myself stuck int he middle of a circle of all my opponents, talk about adrenaline rush. I got out of there QUICK by running for a gap in the line :)

After Paranoi we went to play in one of the dirt floor barns on the site. The marshals set-up a house breach scenario with several doors. The stuck all the Don's and my Friend John against the rest of us. My Don marshaled this one so his wife Gwyn could "play" this scenario instead of marshalig it. She took the side of the Dons. She and John are what are called Cadets or formal students of Don's (I am a cadet to Cub). So Morgan and I wound up the captains of our team. He wanted to be on the front line (he had led his line for the field battles) so while we came up with the tactics together, I did the calling. My first time ever!! It was really interesting and different to be int he back and try and be aware and calling when to fill gap, pressing forward and the like. I still got in a ton of fencing because when you are the only one to fill the hole you jump in! But it was definitely heart pumping trying to keep my guys/gals focused and ready for the fray!
So the first several times we defended the "house" (demarcated by the barn door and then several hay bail "walls" against the attack with several choke points. At the end we were the ones trying to breach the house. We did really well the first time and got some one sneaked through to the objective fairly quickly. After that we did it again and fought HARD for the first door, blasted though the 2nd two doors but got stuck at the last one (there resurrection point was right there so it was VERY difficult to kill them fast ENOUGH!) It was a LOT of GREAT fencing, tactics and lesson in staying alive but trying to some how push their line all at once so we could break through! We finally had to call it because it was just getting too dusty in there with the dirt floor.

I got several really nice compliments from Gwyn which is great because she always is our commander for the big battles at Pennsic so it really felt good to get compliments considering it was my first time :) My Don said good things too. All around awesome time in there.

And that was not all!!! We then moved into the hog barn. There were all these pens that the marshals could open the doors to close off or create new hallways. We played several team on team scenarios where the was a flag in the center. This was a timed battle (resurrection). When time was called whoever was within a certain distance of the flag got to fight it out for the actual win. We also played this maze paranoia style at the end with every man for themselves. It was a blast because it kept changing! The marshals wandered about opening and closing hallways at will as the fencers were fighting their bouts all over the place. same end rule when time was called you had to be close to the flag to be one of the last few fighting for the win!!

It was such a fun day!! We closed with a small baronial court and feast. I have had better food wise but David and I got to sit with some old friends (non-fencers) whom we had not gotten a chance to chat with in awhile!! And last but not least was the burning of the Wickerman, himself. This particular event's theme is the burning of the Wickerman. And old Halloween tradition dating back to period times and beyond. So we watched him burn and then drove back to my parents' for a well deserved nights sleep :)

Old Man Scale: Was not so kind this AM. He was just reminding me of some poor food choices over the week-end. I am sure we will be on good terms again soon. I am up 3lbs from Friday but with a lot of water and hot tea I am sure they will melt back away!

Edit to add: So I am going back in and filling in as much as I can of the food I had over the week-end and I am trying to be BRUTALLY honest with myself. But so far I still ate less calroies than I burned!!!!! Not nearly as a big a deficit as usual but still more burned than eaten WooHoo!! So my theory about it being a salt related gain may well be true!

Good eating, health and fun to everyone!

Well I am in the October Carb Counting Challenge which means you set a Net Carb Goal hence NC. We are also required/encouraged to eat at least 3 cups of Veggies/fruit on that challenge hence the Vs or you might see cs V. Exercise is in minutes a goal I set for myself after what I considered a really good exercise week. That one I will adjust as I go. The Floor/Midrange/Ceilign goals were created for the 10 - 30 by Novemebe ror Bust challenge. The challeneg was to lose 1lb/wk so I did 12 + 1 which is 13 for my floor. It was also a nice even number on my scale. The midrange was 5 extra lbs and the ceilng was 10 extra lbs lost on top of the 5 for the midrange goal to make me reach for something tough and that is what I am on now. Hope that helps! after the OCC challenge I will probably keep the excersize goal but drop the NC. I think I will keep the fruit/veggie goal though we shall see. It has helped me eat healthier.

Thanks for sharing that! A good friend of mine goes to Pennsic each year as well! Her name is Jill...not sure what her house is called, but she loves it...and has her homemade tent, and clothing. Sounds like a blast! Keep up the great work! =)

Your journal reads like an Arthurian adventure -- as in King Arthur and the Knights of the Round! Sounds wonderfully strange! I hope you take that observation as a compliment about your hobby. Keep groovin'!
