kmartdollie's Journal, 17 November 2012

I am fighting with my cousin, a minister's wife, because in response to a post on Facebook, which said "'LIKE' if you have been baptised and accepted Christ", I put "I have been baptised but I do not accept Jesus Christ as my personal savior, unless he really wants to show up and he is down for that." Oh, she is HOT for me. I can't believe she gives a shit what I think. Go save someone and leave me alone! What does this have to do with Fat Secret? Well, I appreciate that a lot of people on here are Christian or have different beliefs than I do, and I'm an agnostic. Sometimes I say irreverant things in my journals or I take the name of someone's Lord in vain. No one has ever criticized me for that on Fat Secret and I really appreciate it. I feel I can be myself here without being scrutinized or penalized. I really value that.

I ran farther and faster than I ever have tonight. I ran 3.5 miles at 4.1 miles per hour. I have decided that I am "training" again. I am training for a 10K that is six months from now. It is twice as far as I can run right now. I am determined to do it, and I am determined to get my speed up to at least 4.5 miles an hour to do it, also. I have downloaded some new super funky music on my ipod and I had a great time running to it tonight at the gym. People at the gym are so boring when they work out. Everyone has headphones and they stare straight ahead like they are oblivious. I get down. I wave my hands in the air like I just don't care, I mouth the words, I have a great time. Let them look at me. I'm having an awesome time and I'm the one running on the damn treadmill sweating while you are looking at me from the relative safety of the ARC trainer. Ha! And when I achieve goals, like the first time I ran a mile, or the first time I ran two miles, or the first time I ran 3.2 miles, I let out a yell when I'm done and believe me that gets the looks. These people need to lighten up and get a little motivation. I want to be around people that are so thrilled and psyched with their workout that they just need to make a joyful noise to the Lord, so to speak.

That's awesome with your run! I just started out running...I can do a mile without stopping, but its slow! I've read some people say to run a few mins and then walk a few and build up. What was your approach to it? People are so worried about other people right? I go to church, but I just focus on myself and kids...I mean I refuse to shove my belief on others, it's not right.

Seaside, when I started I could only run a minute at a time. I would walk 5 minutes, and run a minute. I did this for WEEKS. Then I built up to running 2 minutes, and walking 5. I kept doing it until I could run for 5 solid minutes, which is about a quarter of a mile. Then I could gradually run for 7 1/2 minutes, which is about half a mile. I never walked in intervals once I could run a quarter of a mile. I would just do the elliptical for half an hour, and then get on the treadmill, run my quarter mile or my half mile, and then be done with it. I would do that the whole time I was building up for a mile. Then once I could do a mile, within one month I was running gradually more, and 30 days later I could do two miles. I was adding 1/4 of a mile every week. I was still doing the elliptical for half an hour, and then running my two miles, walking a 5 minute cool down, and that was it. I still run like that. I do my elliptical for exactly 28 minutes, and then I get on the treadmill and run my 3.5 miles for the next 47 minutes, and then I do a 5 minute cooldown walk. A lot of people do that structured couch to 5K program where you're running 5 minutes, walking 5 minutes alternating continuously for half an hour, and then you just add minutes to your intervals until you are walking for half an hour, running for half an hour, and then walking for another half an hour. That was NOT for me. I couldn't even do the walking for 5 minutes, running for 5 minutes alternating for half an hour. I would have given up on the first day. No, I just stayed with it and added a tenth of a mile every week for a while until I was able to get to a mile. Once I had a mile, it was ON. You just do what works for you. I recommend just going slowly and adding distance when you feel you are able, and nothing too crazy all at once. Right now, not only am I adding distance, but I am now trying to add speed. My goal is to add .1 of a mile in speed every month. I should be able to do that, in addition to increasing my distance every month. I say do whatever the hell makes you feel good, that you are motivated to do, and that is manageable. For HCB, it's all about Jillian Michaels. For me, it's all about running, and now I am taking strength training/cardio classes, too. For someone else, it may be power walking. It's just whatever you feel like doing. Different people connect with different types of exercise. Go with what you feel. If you are excited about running and you look at people doing it and you wish you could, and you can envision yourself doing it, then that's your thing. If you can watch a yoga class and see yourself doing it, then that's your thing. Just do what you feel you would love and what you feel "called" to do.

thanks! I'm not so great at it right now, but I really do enjoy running...I'd love to be like the folks who run for so many miles like it's nothing :)

I have been slacking on my running. So cold out! I am such a wimp! LOL Going to get back on track from your inspiration! PS. I am an atheist, so I get what you mean. It will blow over....one of those things that you can agree to disagree on!
