CJT1217's Journal, 23 July 2012

Ok, I love trail running now. So I'd like to track how many miles I'm actually running without looking at a damn map and adding it all up. I don't care about calories burned (cuz ya, that's really accurate right?). Also, when I run, there's a LOT of elevation change. Bonus if it has an altimeter, but not necessary.

So any suggestions on a good pedometer? Something simple, inexpensive, effective, and accurate? There's a lot of em out there and I wouldn't know where to start. So, any ideas would be greatly appreciated :D

Omron Hj-112 Digital Pocket Pedometer. I think it runs about 25.00 Got it for me for my bday a year ago and I was using it to do my steps per day... got away from it but that might be a good idea with the job change.

Ok cool. I'll look that one up. I just want to be sure the pedometer I get can handle the running and elevation changes without losing accuracy.

have u thought of using an app that has a GPS that tracks the distance ur running? I use endomondo.

I downloaded one previously which works great when I have signal. I've found my droid OS isn't the most dependable... and sometimes, I go to places that have little to no reception. But, I'll check it out, thanks :)

Well if not that one I'd check out the brand. Friends have used other and no problems really across the board

I have had tons of problems with my GPS app... and I just don't know how accurate it can really be. 1/10 of a mile is a decent difference and mine was always off at least 1/10 compared to a trail marked with measured distances. It was off 1/10 on my 5K measured race too. Nike+? I don't have one but I hear great things.

I use the mapmyrun app and it does very well, but it sucked on my old phone. When I upgraded it was night and day better.

I use mapmyrun, but on a cheap phone which causes problems. I'm not sure if it's accurate.

Ya, my HTC is a bit unreliable.. so I'm leaning towards something to clip on my belt... But, I think I'll go both routes; an app and a pedometer. I've heard good things about Nike+ as well, but I don't use anything apple. I saw this Ozeri 4x3 Razor pedometer on amazon and liked the description. Anyone know anything about this brand?

I have an Ozeri pedometer I bought from Amazon a while ago for walking. It looks good but for me the screen is very very small and I found it hard too read; however I am much much much older than you and cannot see shit without my glasses. It has a bunch of options, but I haven't really used it much.

I use endomondo too and love it. service it's a problem though sometimes. You can download a pedometer app too. For a pedometer I would just go to target or some sporting goods store. They are super cheap too. Are you just going to calculate distance using your stride length?

The problem with my stride length is that it can vary so much depending on going up an incline, down an incline, or if I'm relatively level. The park I ran at yesterday has few level surfaces. So I'm hoping to find one that can calculate accurately despite this.

then you're probably gonna wanna invest in a GPS one with an altimeter.

Recommend any in particular?

no idea. i'm not so helpful. i've only owned one in my life. and i don't even know how to work it all. Mine is a Garmin Forerunner 405cx, it does heartrate & distance/speed, but no elevation measurement.

I think the nike+ sportsband would be ideal for your application. Doesn't require a signal, and it is basically a higher-end pedometer. I find it to be pretty accurate outside, but it's accuracy is going to be proportional to how consistent your pace is. Total price for the band and sensor is typically about $55.00.

When trail running where the trees cause you to lose a GPS signal, you lose the typical GPS accuracy, because it updates - as the crow flies - when you get in a clearing. If all you are interested in is 'distance covered as the crow flies' GPS would be the way to go, but it really won't necessarily tell you how far you've run, if you're running in places that are prone to lose the signal. IMHO, you're better off going with the cheapest alternative, and being happy with a pretty good estimate of your distance. I found the nike+ did a pretty good overall average with some pretty good size hills.

Cool, thanks for the info!
