So I tried Zumba last night. Everyone else that has tried it seems to comment how much they love it, and here I am wondering why I'm so different than everyone else cause I hated it.

As soon as I figured out which arm was up/down/left/right with where my foot was supposed to be the instructor would switch to some other pattern, only seeming to last 4 times before it would switch again. "OK, now Flaminco!" she yelled and of course I was like "what the hell is flamico?" and I watched the others to figure it out and as soon I thought I understood what foot and hand went where she shouted "OK, now Samba!" and the pattern of shouting out dance moves I have NO CLUE how to do and as soon as I thought I might be doing it correctly she would yell out some other dance move I have ZERO knowledge of how to do.

I left about half way thru the class cause I was just standing there like a complete dork trying to understand why my arms and legs aren't moving in the same way and patterns in time with everyone else. To make matters worse, I have bad knees, and because of the frantic jumping yesterday I can barely even walk today. Stupid Zumba Craze. Why does everyone like it? Why am I such a dork who looks like I'm tripping over my own feet while everyone else (even beginners) look like they graceful gazelles leaping thru the air?

Damn group torture! I've never been able to line dance, do the electric slide, or any other "group" thingy where everyone is supposed to be doing the same thing at the same time.

You are not alone! I felt so guilty because my company pays to have classes twice a week and I felt I had no excuse not to go. I went a few weeks, but was forcing myself. I felt so very uncoordinated and I just felt like a fool. I decided that I will get more out of doing something I enjoy than something I had to force myself to do. I found a very nice, compact exercise bike and plan to use that instead.

Nope, you're not alone. I got the Zumba workout for XBox and got stuck on Lesson #2! At least the disc DOES have lessons where you just move your feet first, slowly, then up to speed....then you do the arms at slow speed with your feet, then both up to speed. I THINK there's hope for me going slowly like that, but, like you, I could never just go into a Zumba class and hit it all. Maybe there's an Intro class????

No intro class where I work out (city rec center) believe me I would have chosen a beginner class if such a thing existed. Seems I'd have to take 10 kinds of dancing lessons first to be qualified for Zumba. Glad I'm not the only person with two left feet

Icy - you make me laugh! I made it thru about 4 classes - and kept telling myself I really did LOVE IT! When deep down inside, I felt just like you described! LOL!!! I haven't been back for the torture since! ;)

I did work up a great sweat tripping over myself though!

My Zumba is a Wii game. I can rerun the tutorials over and over again. Plus no one get to see me try to wiggle. As Sandy suggested, would learn it in private first.

Paula, I just seem to do best when doing my own thing. I'm too much of a non-conformist.

I felt the same way when I did it on the Wii...I SO could not follow the instructor. Eventually I just started jumping and hopping LOL! I thought perhaps taking a class first would help, but I'm thinking not so much!

Sorry you ladies did not enjoy it. However on a positive note, there are many different styles and sometimes it's about finding the right instructor who fits your style and makes it fun for YOU! I have been to several classes and I learn something new from each one. Usually from the first couple of songs, you can tell if you mesh with that instructor or not. I would encourage those who may have not liked it as much to try someone else :) I can not samba or flamenco for the life of me! lol

My daughter and I have talked about buying the CD's/DVD's - so we can take our time learning the moves, and the various routines w/ different songs, etc. Who knows, in maybe 6 years we'll venture out to a class!!! ;)
