Sandy701's Journal, 18 May 2011

They say that just the thought of food increases our insulin levels. If so, then stop here! LOL!

Yesterday we harvested our first tomatoes!! Yes, they were awesome still semi-warm off the vine. We're very happy with how the vines are doing so far, probably the best we've done in a few years. Of course, this year we had them in the ground and not in pots. DH thought the spot I picked out for him to put in his garden wouldn't get enough sun, but I held firm that the spot was fine. He always has his own ideas on where to plant veggies and those areas are not always conducive to reclaiming whenever we have to sell the house! Which, in the military, is every 2-4 years. I can hardly wait until we have a retirement house where he can put however big a garden he wants wherever he wants to put it.

Did I say those tomatoes were excellent??!!

For all you waiting to get your plants put in, never fear. You'll be gloating over your own harvests this summer when we're baking and in between planting seasons.

Sandy - I am so jealous!!! My tomatoes blossoms aren't even opened yet - they are too wet and cold. Maybe it is a good thing you'll be selling the house since you can't get anyone to fix anything!

Drooling here.lol All we have is a huge mud hole that Art plowed. We are waiting for some sunshine so it will start to dry so we can till it. A long way from planting yet. So glad you enjoyed those delicious treasures. Hope your having a great evening.:)

Buffy, I think we may have lost a few blossoms last night as we set a new record overnight low - 43. If I remember correctly, I think it's about 50 when blossoms drop and the process has to start over again. Luckily, they're really not forecasting lows like that again. I try to avoid contractors AMAP just because of all the frustration. DH and I are DIY wherever and whenever possible. Up until this house, we've always tried to make the house perfect and fix up everything while we owned it. This time, it just seems more difficult!

Well Laurie, at least the subsoil is getting a good dose of water that should eventually help your garden this summer. We're actually in a drought and you should see all the watering that's going on. I'm sure the city coffers will be happy! Enjoy your child-free evening.

Bren, eventually we'll try some tomatoes with bacon, mayo, maybe rolled in a low-carb tortilla, but for now, they've been great cut up with just a bit of salt. No tomatoes for today, although one should be ready tomorrow. Gosh, now you've got my mouth watering for a BLT!

Sandy - have you ever had tomato pizza? Take a big tomato slice and add mozzarella, sprinkle with oregano and whatever other toppings you want - then place under the broiler. Now my blood sugar is soaring!

Wow Buffy - sounds deicious. You know, I bet you could even use part of Stef's idea too and put the tomato and toppings on top of a portabella mushroom too. I want more tomatoes....!!!!!!!

Sandy, I don't believe we are going to have to water at all this year. I just hope I will be able to plant something soon. My child free evening was great, thanks.:)

Drooling I am & soooo jealous! Yikes, you would laugh if you could see my piddly little tomato plants I started from seed, they are only 2" tall! FYI, my personal opionion is; you can never have too many tomato plants! Ohh you guys...this is almost like torture! With all of your mouth watering, wiping the drool, descriptions, it feels like the tomatos are sooo close, but yet so far...

Babs, maybe we could work out a swap....I'll send you a bit of sunshine and drying breezes if you'll send me some moisture!

Milbwknicole, I know the feeling of waiting for the tomaotes to turn red. Seems like ours just got bigger and bigger but were taking a long time to turn red. Wish we had some cucumber plants, but we did plant some squash plants - AFTER the time those borers supposedly target those plants. Last year we lost all our squash to borers.

GG-Girl, your descriptions brought to mind our early plantings in another state. We had all sorts of tables rigged up by the one window with lots of sun and had trays and trays of tiny plants, all grown from seeds. DH pretty much gave up on seeds, except for sugar snap peas that he can put outside right away. I completely agree....you can never have too many tomato plants!! We get a lot of different varieties to see which produce the best, but then we totally forget which ones did the best, by the next year!

Laurie, your time is a comin' to be planting. Just hope it comes soon, as I would think you've got just a few months to get it all in, grown, and harvested before your temps start dropping.
