Sandy701's Journal, 10 May 2011

I think it's time to bring out the broth again. Temperatures are increasing and the summer-like humidity seems like it's moving in, as well. I've been slightly light-headed the last few days and so I think it's time to put broth back somewhere in my summertime meals.

I got the doggies out walking with me just before the low clouds got burned off, so it was "just" 74 degrees and probably nearly the same relative humidity when we went out before 9 AM. My poor Lab (with her heart murmur) still got pretty warm fairly quickly, so the dogs only went 2.3 miles and then I went out and added some more to go the full 3.3 miles.

Our heat pump for a back part of the house went out Sunday night but I had an excellent encounter with the repair contractor yesterday. Actually, we've used them before and they've been excellent every time...fast response, good work, and fair prices. If all contractors were like this, I'd be a happy camper.

Unfortunately, our pool contractor is still MIA for the work that needs to be done on some pool equipment, so I called another one yesterday. It had been over 7 weeks since the first one had been out here to look at the problem and no contact since. The guy who had come out seemed less than enthused about part of the project and had a problem diagnosing the problem with the equipment. In fact, he had to call his boss and neither could diagnose the problem. They thought we might need an entirely new piece of equipment (think a couple thousand $$). I had to bring out the owner's manual to justify what I had told them all along - that we only needed a new temperature sensor - and, voila!, he put a thingy on it and confirmed that's exactly what we need!!! I believe he's not come back because replacing the part is no big deal but the other part of the project just isn't what he wants to do.

This 2nd contractor had an answering machine but it's now been over 24 hours with no response, so I'm about ready to move on to whoever will be contractor #3. WE NEED THIS EQUIPMENT FIXED! I understand small operations may have someone tied up at a job site for the better part of the day, especially when this is pool season and the weather's fantastic. But I also think that SOMEONE from that business ought to have the responsibility for returning phone calls within a day's time. Is that too much to ask?

I'm about ready to just go right on down the phone book listings, taking the first one who might actually answer the phone. I've given up on that other part of the project, as DH has said we could both work on it and probably do an OK job of it. Not sure I agree with that because of all the work he's still doing on his car, but, for now, I can put that on the back burner.

I'm such a cynic...I think that a number of these companies keep advertising, looking for the big projects and just ignore all the small jobs, unless they get to a point where they can't find anything else to do. And then, if they find it's not really something they can make a good profit on, or it's too small a job, or whatever, they'll bid it extra high so the homeowner looks elsewhere OR they'll make a handsome profit on that job!

OK, rant done. This hasn't been food-related, but it's what I'm dealing with for today.

I hope you get your pool fixed soon! With weather like you are having, hot & humid, the pool would be wonderful to relax in. Keep going, call you have to, eventually somebody will fix it. Are the pool people really that busy & well off work wise that they can afford to let work get away from them? Maybe we should open a pool business then!

Thanks GG-Girl. At least the pool is swimmable as is - IF you don't mind chilly water!! This is exactly the time we could use the heat pump to add just a little extra heat so we can get in there NOW! DH and I have both had a number of days in these last few weeks that we would have been in there if the temps had been higher. It's OK to put our feet in now, and in northern states, this would be summertime water temps! But once you get used to warmer water temps, it's hard to go back. They say Olympic athletes swim competitively in 78 degree water, but even that's too chilly for me. As far as the pool people being well-off enough to turn down business, who knows? The pool enclosure people around here say that business is WAY off, but they, too, are looking for large jobs, not the little repair jobs. Certainly if people don't have jobs or can't pay the mortgage, they're not putting in pools. But....this IS prime time for people who want a pool; usually they want it all put in and ready to swim YESTERDAY so the pressure is on for the pool companies to complete their projects and to do so quickly...not do piddly little repairs.

I hate that people do you that way. We haven't a pool as husband says its too much trouble. there is no excuse for not calling you back even if its to tell you they don't want the job...Good luck in finding someone to do it. Have a great evening.......Bren

Rant all you want. Sounds like you really have your hands full with all of this. Do you think this might be something you can purchase and do yourself? Or possibly a handy man service/company?

Ok - I admit 78 for water temp is below my comfort zone! I hope you don't have to wait very long to be swimming again!

I have been seeing commercials for Kudzu.com for reviews on local businesses. Could that help? Hope you can find someone and get your pool fixed.

Bren...Pools truly aren't that much work! We got our first one at the last house and I got all the info I needed from the Internet because our contractor told us next to nothing about how to operate the thing (this is NOT standard for pool builders, as I later found out). Anyway, esp. since your DH is a contractor, it would probably be an easy keeper for you. I do all the water maintenance on it, water testing, adjusting chems, etc. along with filter, pump, pool vac, and salt cell upkeep, which is minimal. Doesn't take all that long and I can adjust immediately if I see a problem developing. It's just the plumbing and electrical that I don't know anything about, so that's where the contractors come in. I suppose that if I paid a pool service every week, they'd be able to find me the appropriate people to take care of this, but because I do my own routine maintenance, I'm left to guess who to contact. Enjoy your evening too, Bren...

Keli, I'd love to do this DIY but I know nothing about electrical stuff and I think the sensor is on a circuit board??? But, you've given me an idea...I belong to 2 pool forums and I could post my problem there as both forums have fantastic experts that are very giving with their advice. Thanks for the ideas!

C'mon GG-Girl...those temps in the mid-70's are summertime temps for municipal outdoor pools (without heating)in WI! BTW...how's the temp where you're swimming these days?

Melissa...Kudzu? Hmmm....haven't heard of that one but might be worth a check. I only knew of Angie's List and I had thought that our area wass too small to have had many references. Then again, maybe it would be worthwhile because I'm really going into this with only BBB reports and the state licensing board info. That's not a whole lot to go on and it misses the smaller headaches these businesses may have caused homeowners.

Sandy - you have the worst time! Wishing you good luck - both with your light-headedness and with your house.

Sandy, we just opened our pool and it was the nastiest color of green....I am so disgusted with the pool people here. We have had this pool since 1988 and only in the last 2 years has it looked like this when we opened it. So we are dealing with that...I just do not understand....it should be crystal clear when it is opened, and should not take so much in chemicals and time to get it to the point that we can swim. As for the temp...well, I don't swim until the water temp hits 88!! lol Hope you are able to find a contractor soon!
