LadyinDenim's Journal, 21 June 2016

OK, I'm not hungry physically, but I wanna eat. One of my patients sent me to the vending machine to buy him potato chips and corn chips. I said, "I will do it, but I don't want to because it's poison." "Poison?!?" "Poison for your body." He rolled his eyes, "Whatever!"

To fill his request, I had to get an extra bag because one of them got stuck. In the end, he had 4 bags of chips balanced on his belly as he watched cable TV from his bed at full volume. I truly felt a little jealous.

Triggered by Frito Lay. The b@$t**ds.

When I do eat now, I really do eat slowly and enjoy every bite. It's a "weight loss tip" that's been around forever, but I never saw the point. Now, it's just the way I eat.

I used to juice quite a bit, but now with IF, I would rather consume food I can chew.

I'm assuming you do some sort of nursing off of the bariatrics unit.

No, just your standard nursing home. We get a mix - age 31 to 103.

If you need a crunchy salty thing (and you're home and can make it) take a 1/4 shredded cheese in a sauté pan and let it go until it gets browned across. Take it out, let it sit for a minute and it tastes like cheez its.

I think those are what Olive Garden put on salads. Yummy. I love cheese. I think of it as a treat.

Nice drop! I feel ya! I get eyerolls almost daily...lol. I just can't help myself from spreading the knowledge I've gained. That's probably why I'm not very sociable outside of this site. No one wants to hear it, and it's all I want to talk about. I'm so freakin ADD about it! 😂 Don't feel jealousy, babe, feel empowerment! 😉

Lay's chips are so truly addictive. I wish every store would charge list price ($5 on the package) and I would never be tempted.

@trackin64... I read SOMEWHERE; you know how they say you can't eat just one?? Its a scientific fact that the chemicals they use actually DO make it nearly impossible to eat just one.

Nice drop! Chewing is my favorite exercise!

Shouldn't his family be providing him with that garbage? Why should it be your duty to go and fetch the junk? Great drop btw. :) He should be the one who's jealous. You work in the ECF and lives there. Eating chips and watching TV all day in a bed or chair is nothing to be envied.

@Engeland... I love your brutal honesty! ☺

@C2B......... :D Medical personnel shouldn't be responsible for providing one's drug of choice or poison in my opinion. They are there to promote healthy behaviors not to enable poor choices. I probably would of told this patient if I have time I will go and get your garbage.......oh, I mean chips and corn chips. I am busy too busy right now. That's what I would of told him. If you don't make the time, what can he do?

I feel ya, Engeland! Most health care professionals here in the US are so oblivious to the situation. Here in my little town's hospital; you can get all of the "garbage" you want, but there isn't a pat of butter or pinch of salt in sight. The salt thing REALLY baffles me being that when you check in the first thing they do is hook you up to an IV of saline (pure salt water). I REALLY wish someone could explain that one to me!
21 Jun 16 by member: Caterpillar2Butterfly
There are different concentrations of NaCl in regards to IVF. It depends on the patient's labs, diagnosis, etc. what IVF is needed. Not everyone gets IVF or IVF with NaCl. You are going to get an IV access for sure if admitted. The garbage........well, I think every hospital has the vending machines propped full with it. They are more so for the visitors than the patients, but nevertheless patients can purchase the garbage too. You would think a place promoting health would provide healthier choices, but they don't. The RN hanging the bag of IVF is doing what she is supposed to do because that's her duty. It isn't her duty to go fetch the sugary and salty snacks. Medical personnel can't stop or police patients from using these vending machines and/or family bringing the garbage in. NO butter or salt for ALL the patients? Oy vey! What kind of hospital is that?

Thanks for clearing that up for me, Engeland! Much appreciated! I agree with you 100%! Yep, in my little town you will be lucky (or unlucky, depeding on how you look at it) to get a pat of margarine. The only place you'll find salt is in the cafeteria.

LMAO Christine! 😂😂 @Engeland, I griped about it but still did it because I didn't want him on the light all night! Also, crappy choice as it is, it's a quality of life issue and an opportunity to build trust (how ironic is THAT?!? - am I listening to myself right now?). At least I got a drop of patient education in. @C2B, I didn't wade too far in to the jealousy pool. I confessed it to my co-workers and it sounded so absurd and we all laughed. 😁

@LID.........You do have a point with him possibly laying on the call light all night until you come. It's a fine line with building a rapport with patients and setting limits I suppose. If he is terminal or has a poor prognosis then I can't see how the chips and corn chips are really going to matter in that situation. I say get him what he wants if that's the case. @C2B.....Scarce salt and butter=budget cut. :( That's my guess. Hospitals are managed like corporations nowadays.
