59Carol's Journal, 18 April 2020

I am feeling very ripped off. Taking some deep breaths around this mornings weigh in. I gained 1.2 pounds. I honestly don't know why. Throughout the week my weight stayed stubbornly up despite what I was eating. I kept telling myself that the scale must come down as I know what I am doing. I also had ham for two meals earlier in the week so I thought maybe it was the salt content. In the end, today's weigh-in is an exact reflection of my all my morning daily weigh-ins. When I average them, they are what I weighed in at this morning.

The numbers.... I averaged the week's calorie intake and am inside the window that I aim at. Three out of seven days were above the window but never above by more than 50 calories. I was under the window two days at no more than 30 calories below. And in the window for two days. That should have lead to at least a 1 pound loss.

My daily morning exercise stayed steady at an hour a day. I did not get outside for the cardio piece very much. However, I do know that exercise, although an important health component, is not a deciding factor as far as the scale goes.

What am I left with? I will re-double my efforts on paying attention to the licks, snicks and other types of 'sneaky' calories. Make sure that I am not 'fooling' myself. The numbers generally do not lie therefore I may not be accounting for some.

I remain 6 pounds above my lowest weight. I will persevere!

This week my out of the ordinary is that I adopted a cat form the SPCA. This might sound mundane to many of you... however I am not a known animal lover. When the kids were at home we had our menagerie of cats and dogs, chickens, turkeys, geese and pigs. There were even a hedgehog, snake and iguana thrown in at different stages. I wasn't fond of the mess they made and the constant monitoring of the kids to make sure they cared for the animals appropriately. So when the kids left and the animals slowly died they were not replaced. Many times it was suggested that we get a pet and I was the most adamant at saying 'no'.

Needless to say when I announced that I had a cat the responses from friends that know me included: 'A stray?', 'Whaaa?', 'Are you pet sitting?', 'I am a wee bit surprised', and 'Do you have a mouse problem?'. What actually happened is that my daughter sent me a picture of the cat and I fell in love. What can I say, Tangent is a gorgeous cat. She is a Bengal cat which means that she is intelligent, highly independent and 'talkative'. Not a clingy cat. Actually perfectly suited to me. We chit chat, occasionally have a pet and a purr and are otherwise adjusting to each other. This morning she came to me to get her jaw scratched while she purred her pleasure.

I love to ready you journey. I say journey not journal deliberately. You seem to be doing so well, and a little up tic in the weight is not a worry. Your snowshoeing and keeping busy are great. Your kitty is absolutely beautiful! At this very moment, I have my own bengal, very independent kitty condescending to sitting on my lap. He has the most unusual of personalities compared to any other cats I've had my whole life. He has absolutely nothing to do with most members of the family, but is absolutely devoted to one son. A critter is really nice to have even though they are an annoyance at times!! 😁 Enjoy!

Carol - good job with opening your home and heart to a beautiful cat. They provide unconditional love. My first came to me via a coworker trying to home a large litter dumped on one of her neighbors lots. My second came to me because I quickly realized he needed a girlfriend to occupy the time I was out of the home at work or play. She is a beautiful cat ! What is her name ?

Keep plugging away! Gotta be water or muscle. Can't be fat with those numbers. The number on the scale is not the boss of you.

It definitely sounds like water retention from higher than normal sodium intake. Can take up to a week to flush and return to baseline. Drink lots of water and watch the salt and you'll be back to losing in no time.

Melissatawa- Thank you for the reassurance around the weight gain. I am expecting it to drop this week -- provided that I stay the course! I am impressed with the Bengal breed thus far. I really like her independence and alertness. Sounds like your cat is quite similar to mine in personality. I will have to see how well we bond over the next months.

Crazycatchick- I am enjoying my new addition to my home. She came with the name Tangent. Since she responds to it, I am keeping it.

LZenn - since you are also the queen of numbers, I appreciate your faith that the numbers just have to add up properly. I am planning on staying on track this week so I can see what that brings. Good reminder that the scale is not the be all and end all in this journey. Thank you for that.

Skitzerthecat- I am a huge water drinker - I habitually drink 14 cups daily plus I have 2 cups of tea and 2-4 cups of kombucha a day. I will continue and hope that any extra salt will wash out of my system! I have a friend who is certain that I drink too much water and that drinking as much as I do is detrimental to my health!

Skitzer, Katsolo, and wifey - you can see why I fell in love with Tangent's picture! Thank you for your cat compliments.

Carol, that is a lot of water 18x8oz=144oz, unless you’re burning significant amounts during exercise routines. Try keeping it under 100oz a few days and let us know the results.

srossa- I have drinking this much water routinely for almost two years. I drink it at specific times of the day with 6 cups happening during my daily hour of exercise although I wouldn't characterize my exercise as taxing. Then I drink two cups every two hours until 4 pm. After that I don't usually drink anything. I honestly don't see the harm in it. I feel thirsty as in a dry back of my throat at different times throughout the day. I read that as the body is wanting the water. I just can't see drinking any more water than I do.

Such a beautiful companion!

I’m suggesting drinking less. Usually we don’t measure in ounces & it comes to be excessive amounts. A mug of coffee is about 12 to 14oz.
